Steering

The Choral Steering Committee is a vital piece of the choral organization. Comprised of parent volunteers, the committee meets monthly in order to discuss and support important events and ventures in the choirs.

Under the direction of Mr. Jeffe Huls, the Santa Monica High School Choirs continue to receive unanimous superior ratings at area festivals, tour internationally, and have a large number of students accepted into regional and state honor choirs. His Chamber Singers have been awarded first place in the Golden State Choral Competition Women's Division twice in the last three years.

Santa Monica High School Choral Music program is one of the most accomplished in the region, winning awards at state and national competitions. Our choirs have performed in major cities around the world. Closer to home, we share the gift of music by performing at community events, local schools, caroling for holiday shoppers, and visiting local senior centers.

Tenor-Bass Chorus
Treble Chorus P

Grade Level: 9-12, Period 1 (Tenor-Bass), Period 4 (Treble)
Meet s UC/CSU Requirements
Year Course (5 credits per semester)
Prerequisite: None
 
These are entry-level choirs with no experience necessary. Students in these ensembles will work on basic vocal technique, musicianship, and performance technique, studying and performing choral literature from the Classical to 20th Century periods. They will learn the fundamentals of music theory and notation, along with pronunciation of Latin, Italian, German, French, and English. Students will become familiar with the "movable do" system of solfege sight-singing. Students will perform with the ensemble twice each year and once alone in front of the class.


Samohi Chorale P

Grade Level: 10-12, Period 5
Meet s UC/CSU Requirements
Year Course (5 credits per semester)
Prerequisite: Previous choral experience,usually Mens’ or Womens’ Chorus, audition

Intermediate to advanced ensemble course. Students will study and perform choral literature for large mixed choirs from the Renaissance to 20th Century periods and will begin to study more extended choral works. They will become moderately proficient in the pronunciation of Latin, Italian, German, French, and English. Students will learn more intricate aspects of music theory and notation. Students will become proficient with the "movable do" system of solfege sight-singing. Students will perform with the ensemble four times each year and once alone in front of the class.


Madrigal Ensemble

Grade Level: 11-12, Period 2
Meets UC/CSU Requirements
Year Course (5 credits per semester)
Prerequisite: Previous choral experience at Samohi, audition
 
This is an advanced ensemble; audition required. Students will study and perform advanced choral literature for mized chamber choirs from the Renaissance to the 20th Century periods and will study more extended choral works. They will become proficient in the pronunciation of Latin, Italian, German, French, and English. Students are expected to be proficient with the "movable do" system of solfege sight-singing. Students will perform with the ensemble at least four times each year and once alone in front of the class.


Chamber Singers

Grade Level: 11-12, Period 3

Prerequisite: Previous choral experience at Samohi, audition
