FIFA World Cup 2022: Australia results, scores and standings

Australia put up a brave fight in the the round of 16 at the FIFA World Cup 2022 but went out to Argentina 2-1 on Saturday (3 December).

The Socceroos trailed to goals from Lionel Messi and Julian Alvarez, the latter capitalising after goalkeeper Mathew Ryan failed to control the ball properly.

But Graham Arnold's men came roaring back with Craig Goodwin's long-range shot taking a big deflection off Enzo Fernandez into the net with 13 minutes to left.

Aziz Behich went on a memorable slaloming run but was tackled by Lisandro Martinez as he shot, and then substitute Garang Kuol had a shot well saved deep into injury time as Australia just failed to find the equaliser.

Australia had secured their berth in the knockout stages with a 1-0 victory over Denmark thanks to Matthew Leckie's goal after an hour.

A 1-0 win over Tunisia, courtesy of Mitchell Duke's strike midway through the first half, secured the Socceroos their first win at the football festival since 2010 after an opening 4-1 defeat to eventual group winners and reigning champions France.
