Notes
Sunshine Superman is Donovan's third album. It was released outside the UK in autumn 1966, but not in the United Kingdom because of a contractual dispute.
These recordings mark a distinct change in Donovan's music, representing some of the first psychedelia released. A full rock band backs up Donovan on many of the songs, and the instrumentation has been expanded to include sitar and other unique musical instruments. This change is partially the result of working with producer Mickie Most, whose pop sensibilities led to chart hits for many other artists at the time.
PERSONNEL:
Donovan (vocals, acoustic guitar); Bobby Ray (bass); “Fast” Eddy Hoh (drums); Shawn Phillips (sitar).
On “Sunshine Superman”:
Donovan (vocals, acoustic guitar); Jimmy Page & Eric Ford (electric guitar); John Cameron (keyboards, arrangement); Spike Healey (bass); Bobby Orr (drums); Tony Carr (percussion).
On “Season Of The Witch”:
Lenny Matlin (Organ)

- I really like this pressing. It stands out for clarity, dynamics, bass. One of my best 60s reissues.
- Edited 11 months agoFrom State51:
the audio used the 2005 digital remasters. The lacquers were cut by Geoff Pesche at Abbey Road. - In mono and outstanding! Best sound of all the CDs mono or stereo. Very clear and crisp. I also have the LP same company which is similarly worth buying. You can buy direct from the company on their website in the UK along with all of the other albums from the 60s that follow this in chronological order. A must for the Donovan fan.
- Edited one year agoNice quiet pressing with gorgeous dynamics, but I think this record might benefit from being played with an actual mono stylus because when I played it listening on my headphones using a stereo stylus, I noticed the sound does tend to wobble from left to right on occasion.
As quixotictic said in their review below, the sound is fantastic with the sole exception of "Sunshine Superman", and this is likely the original mix that is at fault, and not this reissue. referencing Sunshine Superman (LP, Album, Stereo) BN 26217
The fake stereo has a tinny sound, compared to the contemporary mono release. Just get the mono if you want a vintage copy.- OG mono sounds great. The 1966 stereo version I have is fake stereo, so this is the reference mix. To hear the "hits" in true stereo, fans needed to wait for Donovan's Greatest Hits in 1969.

I wish someone would reissue this double cd version of the album.- My copy is stamped in the Side A matrix, but etched in the Side B matrix, so it seems to be a mix between this r7377979 and r10288027. This version r7377979 is listed as a first press (1966), whereas r7377979 is listed as a repress (1967) although "nonbreakable" is omitted on both versions. I see no differences between either cover or label of these two releases, and no year is printed on either version, so how do we know when these versions were released? The information seems to be inconsistent.
