Billy Joel – Why Should I Worry Lyrics | Genius Lyrics

Why Should I Worry Lyrics

[DODGER]
One minute I'm in Central Park
Then I'm down on Delancey Street
Said from the Bowery to St Marks
Heh, there's a syncopated beat
Alright

Said whoo-hoo-whoo-hoo-hoo
I'm streetwise, I can improvise
Said whoo-hoo-whoo-hoo-hoo
I'm street smart, I've got New York City heart

Why should I worry?
Why should I care?
I may not have a dime
But I got street savoir-faire

Why should I worry?
Why should I care?
It's just bebop-ulation
And I got street savoir-faire
Mmm-hmm

The rhythm of the city
Boy, once you get it down
Said you can own this town
You can wear the crown

Why should I worry?
Tell me, why should I care?
Say I may not have a dime
Oh, but I got street savoir-faire

Why should I worry?
Why should I care?
It's just doo-wop-ulation
And I got street savoir-faire

[FEMALE DOGS]
Everything goes
Everything fits

[DODGER]
They love me at the Chelsea
They adore me at the Ritz

Why should I worry?
Why should I care? Yeah!
Even when I cross that line
I got street savoir-faire

[Outro]
Whoo-hoo-whoo-hoo-hoo
Said whoo-hoo-whoo-hoo-hoo
Whoo-hoo-whoo-hoo-hoo
Whoo-hoo-whoo-hoo-hoo
Whoo-hoo-whoo-hoo-hoo
Whoo-hoo-whoo-hoo-hoo
Whoo-hoo-whoo-hoo-hoo
Whoo-hoo-whoo-hoo-hoo

Whoo-hoo-whoo-hoo-hoo
Whoo-hoo-whoo-hoo-hoo
Whoo-hoo-whoo-hoo-hoo
Whoo-hoo-whoo-hoo-hoo

Genius Annotation

Oliver (voiced by Joey Lawrence) helps a street dog named Dodger (voiced by Billy Joel) to steal some sausages from a hot dog stand. However, once the sausages are obtained Dodger leaves and unfairly refuses to share with the kitten, stating that:

“Fairs are for tourists, kid. Consider it a free lesson in street savoir-faire from New York’s coolest quadraped.”

The ensuing song, “Why Should I Worry”, written by songwriting duo Dan Hartman and Charlie Midnight, is sung by Dodger as Oliver chases him in pursuit of the sausages, and details Dodger’s familiarity with the city and his masterful ability when it comes to navigating and living in it. The lyrics makes frequent references to various landmarks and locations in New York City, including Central Park, Delancey Street, The Chelsea hotel, and The Ritz. Joel himself, who performs vocals for the song as well as providing the speaking voice of Dodger, is a New York native, having been born in The Bronx and raised in Long Island, and many of his own songs- such as “New York State of Mind” and “Miami 2017 (I’ve Seen the Lights Go Out On Broadway)”- make loving reference to the state, making him a fitting choice for both the character himself and the song that he performs. The song was also produced by veteran music producer Phil Ramone, who also worked with Joel on several of his own studio albums throughout the 70s and 80s.
