6. Where to go? Dwell into the history and culture of Kazan through museums and city streets and get to know the traditional and modern gastronomy of the region

1. Kazan Kremlin. The Tatar fortress here was built in 1005, destroyed in 1551. Over the next century, it was rebuilt in Russian style as a magnificent Kremlin, with new fortifications and a cathedral. Nowadays it also contains a Kul Sharif Mosque, the Hermitage branch and the leaning Syuyumbike tower among others, galleries, shops and cafes, and is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list.

Kul Sharif Mosque. Gorgeous mosque, completed in 2005, and named after the 16th-century Tatar imam who died at the hands of Ivan the Terrible's army. Best view is from the third floor observation balcony. The dome is in the shape of a lotus flower and the many windows flood the prayer hall with light. Verses from the Koran, including an incantation against envy, are written on tile in the four corners of the hall, and the names on disks suspended lower in the hall are those of the four rightly-guided caliphs and some of the early prophets.

Suyumbike Tower. Söyembikä was a Tatar princess, and regent of Kazan 1549-1551 during the minority of her son. It’s 58 m tall, in tiers; it famously used to lean, but was stabilized and straightened in the 20th-century. You can admire it from the outside but you can't enter or climb it.

4. National Museum of the Republic of Tatarstan. Extensive museum of Tatar and local Russian history. The ground floor displays gifts to Tatarstan on the 1000-year anniversary of the city in 2005, a reproduction of the sultan's throne, and a reproduction of the mausoleum of the sultans. The upper floor depicts Tatarstan from the early settlement of the Volga-Bulgars to the early Tatar state to the Soviet Tatar ASSR to the present.

5. Bauman Street. The main tourist hotspot of the city is filled with fountains that fulfill wishes, the carriage of Catherine II, houses of the 19th century and the monument to Feodor Chaliapin.

6. Kazan Family Center. The wedding registration offices building where new families of the capital of Tatarstan are created, concurrently serves as one of the main viewing platforms on the right bank of the Kazanka River.

7. Gorky park. An old city park with a Lover Arch, a modern children’s playground and a sports and workout zone.

8. Old Tatar quarter. The pre-revolutionary centre of social and religious life of the Kazan Tatars, where mosques and apartment houses of the 17th — early 20th centuries have been preserved. Do not forget to visit Kunche Street — the shortest street in Kazan.

Tatneft Arena. Visit the Ak Bars official equipment shop and buy high-quality hockey gear including Russian branded hockey sticks Zaryad. You may also visit fan-shop located on arena to purchase memorable souvenirs from Kazan – Ak Bars jerseys, caps and other items.

7. Best way to learn Kazan – visit Ak Bars game of Kontinental Hockey League

All participants of the tournament are welcomed in Tatneft Arena for two home games of Ak Bars which will be held on 14th and 16th of January. Your tickets are already included, all you need is just to reach your supervisor.

On Saturday at 17:00 Ak Bars will host Sibir from Novosibirks to battle for higher position in standings before play-offs. Right after that game there will be another encounter between Kazan and Novosibirsk teams – two teams for physically disabled children will play a sledge hockey match on the ice of champions.

On Monday at 19:00 Ak Bars plays against Admiral - a team all the way from Vladivostok, the most Eastern city of Russia.

On Monday at 19:00 you can watch the best rivalry of Russian hockey – Green Derby – emotional battle between two neighbors: Ak Bars and Salavat Yulaev. It is the most important match for fans and a must-win game for both teams.

Come and see with your own eyes what the best Russian hockey looks like!

8. First international hockey forum for muslim countries!

On January 17th at 10:00 in the walls of the Volga Region State Academy of Physical Culture, Sport and Tourism will begin the first ever international hockey forum for muslim countries. Hockey managers from Tatarstan will share their experience on matters of hockey education, rinks operating, sports medicine and more.
