Some Kind of Wonderful (1987) Was it REALLY that hard to figure out Watts was hot?

Going through John Hughes films and this is a big one for me. Now I understand this is an 80’s movie and a girl with short hair and is a “tomboy” makes her unattractive by default, but did it really take Eric Stoltz’s character until the last 5 minutes to find out he was attracted to Mary Stewart Masterson?

Like this isn’t a Ducky situation where the lead character likes hanging out with their best friend but they’re in different tiers of looks. Stoltz is a good looking guy but Masterson even when they try to make her look rugged and sweaty is clearly gorgeous.

Masterson should’ve told him to shove it to be honest, she has to sit through Stoltz going on an entire date with another girl just for him to roll in at the end of the night and say that he wanted her instead.

Side Point: the most rational person in this movie is Stoltz’s dad. It’s not cool that he dismissed his son’s interest in art but he was absolutely right to say that his son dropping his college fund to show off for a girl was completely short sighted.

My favorite movie of all time and ever.

That scene where the biker guys showed up at the party and said, “I’m gonna wipe the floor with you, and I know it, and you know it, and you deserve it.” Yes.

I remember hearing when the movie was released in theatres that Eric Stolz’s character ended up with Amanda Jones in the original version, but the focus groups hated it and it was changed so he would end up with Watts. Seems so obvious that that was the true and correct ending.

I definitely think they should’ve ended up together. I think they needed a scene or 2 after the kiss to establish it.

I did enjoy the movie overall, it was fun to see one tree hill’s perennial good guy Keith Scott play such an asshole in this movie
