Thats about it: I know the male crab is a jimmy and female, etc, etc, etc...

But why are Crabs called Jimmies? Where the name Jimmy come from?

Best guess is because the underside of them has a long cylindrical apron kinda like a jimmy.

Before our country was America back in 1684 the King of England wanted a name for a large male crab. Since parlament did not exist at this time it became the job of the court jester to find a suitable name.

The jesters first thoughts were to call then harries but after some consideration he though it could be easily confused  with hairy so he skipped that idea and began thinking some more.

Suddenly the Merlin the magican appeared before for him. Merlin was wondering around making little sense to the jester who's mind was busy trying to figure out what to name a large male crab. The jester knew if he botched this one up he would surely be beheaded.

All at once Merlin shouted out............Jester get you butt over here and help me jimmie the lock on this door so it appears as I escaped into thin air. The jester hurried as order and help Merlin jimmie the lock.

The rest my friend is history, Merlin got his escape routine down, the Jester kept his head and the King was pleasantly pleased with the name.

All lived happily ever after.

An Ol'timer told me the story of a well endowed crabber who was not shy about his wares. When they would be culling out the males , the one's with the biggest aprons where called Jimmies. The crabbers name "Jimmy". He'd get a kick out of telling the shoebies that story every time.

If you reseach "Slang Jimmie" you should find that "Jimmy" is indeed Slang for Penis.

Found soft also.

I wonder if the choice of name has any thin to do with the behavior I observed when keeping female was legal.

It appear to me the female was not as aggressive as the male, once placed in a basket they seemed to adapt very quickly, fold their legs under their body, tuck in the claws and lay there very peacefully. Where males seem to raise [Sam Hill] for awhile, snap at anything that moves for a longer time.  Some may never settle down.
