      Critics Consensus

Despite a creative team and source material that should be any animation fan's fantasy, uneven craft and an inert story keep Little Nemo from being a proper dream come true.

Charles Solomon Los Angeles Times Decades later, this masterpiece of graphic imagination has been reduced to a long, drawn-out cartoon-adventure that suggests an overblown episode of a Saturday morning TV show. Mar 7, 2023 Full Review Betsy Sherman Boston Globe Although this new film adaptation of Winsor McCay's comic strip has been somewhat homogenized for modern tastes, both in visual style and in storyline, it's a refreshing, mostly marvelous piece of fantasy. Mar 7, 2023 Full Review Roger Ebert Chicago Sun-Times Why is that animation can't seem to free itself from subtly racist coding? That objection aside, Little Nemo is an interesting if not a great film, with some jolly characters, some cheerful songs, and some visual surprises. Rated: 2/4 Mar 7, 2023 Full Review David Armstrong San Francisco Examiner It's a grand ride and it's well-handled by the filmmakers, headed by co-directors William T. Hurtz and Masami Hata. Rated: 3.5/4 Mar 7, 2023 Full Review Bob Campbell Newhouse News Service Something like an art movie for kindergartners. The weakly paced Little Nemo is probably too gentle and fanciful for TV-primed action-crazed older kids, but it is a pleasant magic carpet ride for younger children and dreamy adults. Mar 7, 2023 Full Review Stephen Hunter Baltimore Sun Little Nemo is a great deal of fun to look at passively. Just sit there and let it happen to you. It's a movie meant to be seen, not felt. Ash P Another movie I grew up with and well, sure it was in development hell when ya look up trivia and such about this movie when you're an adult. Still a favorable movie especially for its creativity and well done animation. The plot is a little bit of a mess but at least it picks up okay. Not perfect but still fun as if you were reading the comic strips if you grew up with those before this movie. It is fun for all ages, that's for sure. 7/10. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 10/15/23 Full Review Monsol E As a kid who had constant SEVERE nightmares, a movie about a kid fighting nightmares hit home. I watched this CONSTANTLY. It's not great, but I have a lifetime of love for it. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/25/23 Full Review hailey m Occasionally I forget some of the non-Disney animated movies that filled our family VHS cabinets, but you just can't forget Little Nemo: Adventures in Slumberland. It was a well-worn out VHS in our childhood, despite the nightmarish terror it left in its wake. It follows a young boy, followed by a flying squirrel in red navigator goggles, to give a starting point. The music was brought to life by the Sherman Brothers who have a long list of Disney musical achievements, and I believe Miyazaki Hayao was involved at one point or another. It has a distinctly Japanese anime feel, but reminiscent of Disney classics along with its own artistic style. It's a bit indescribable - almost like trying to explain a dream that shook you up out of your sleep. But it is memorable and magical - whatever you take away from it. And it may leave you forever yelling "ZAJAMA PAJAMA PAJAMA! KAJAMA" if you have a bad dream. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Tiene una trama simple, pero la animación es muy llamativa y el estilo visual es excelente; una buena aventura de sueños. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/16/23 Full Review Audience Member Smells like last year's socks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/28/23 Full Review Audience Member I loved this movie as a kid and still enjoy it to this day. The animation it stunning and the storyline is fun.
