My first Poncho Sanchez recording I bought was “La Familia” and the cover has old photographs, one of them being Cal Tjader. I kind of knew who he was, seeing albums at record stores and seeing his name on Sanchez’s tunes, but the love and admiration Poncho has for this man, his mentor, his teacher-father-figure is finally understood by me listening to this CD. It’s bad-ass! Tjader was a musician’s musician and gave his band the freedom to stretch and grow and playing for an audience seemed to be their fuel. It’s great to get a deeper understanding of one of your favorite artists, knowing who inspired them and which well they drew their water from.😀
the best cd I have purchased in a long time. for a re mastered recording its exceptional in my humble opinion. if you like latin jazz, you will love this. I had Tjader vinyl records back in the 70's and 100's of all genre of music from classical to blue grass. carted them around for years as my music was more important than anything except my family. then I got tired of carting and answered an add for selling vinyls. so I met a guy in a parking lot who offered me $.75 per and I took it. oh what a fool. Beatles, Jefferson airplane, Cream, along with many original classical recordings and the original Ritmo Caliente that I would love to have now. I had a topnotch sound system and and a 'state of the art' turntable and cartridge which produced sound that can't be duplicated with CD's. so the moral of the story is that the past is sometimes prologue. Vinyls are still alive and they are still making turntables.
I have over a dozen Cal Tjader CD's, and this is perhaps my favorite. If you liked his "Cal Tjader Plugs In" disc, you'll love this live release. Like the "Plugs In" recording, there's a strong emphasis on "groove" playing with an electric guitar & keyboards giving a more contemporary sound to the band. But unlike that disc, these are live versions where the band is allowed to really stretch out and explore the tunes. The playing is top-notch, the result of Tjader keeping a cohesive group together for years that knew each other inside and out. The tunes really cook, and are played with enough dexterity and inventiveness to satisfy any hardcore jazz fan. And people who just like a good groove will enjoy this too. All the tunes are very melodic and listenable, but this is definitely NOT a "smooth jazz" CD. These guys are incredible musicians playing full-tilt, and it captures their sound and perfectly. This disc is currently bargain priced and extremely well recorded for a live session. Don't miss out on this one!
The first time I heard Cuban Fantasy was with Charlie Palmieri with Ray Barretto on YouTube. I did some checking out on the song and discovered Cal Tjader; I've seen Pat Matheney, David Sanborn, Joe Sample, Spyro Gyra..on and on. I wish I could have seen him perform or have been in one of these sessions. If you like to chill, this is a must have. I have his greatest hit's and I like this CD the most. I was driving and at a stop light got complimented on the music, that's how good this CD is, Enjoy!!!
Outstanding, rhythm, melodies, perfect for listening in the car over and over again. The Swedish Latin master shows us why he was so popular all around the world. I believe Carlos Santana was influenced by Tjaders' combos listen and you'll agree. Remastered this sounds new and exciting today as it was then
Have followed Cal for decades and this is one of his best! Smooth jazz from his fellow players and great sound from this older recording. Should be a part of everyone's collection.
