The Oddfather is one of the many, many releases dropped by Gucci during his incarceration where I struggle between being impressed and disappointed, because on one hand it's another great slice of Gucci comfort food with very little actual flaws, but on the other hand it's once again the same thing as always. Well, I guess with Gucci in prison there wasn't really that much that could've been done in terms of experimentation. C4 lays down a big and bombastic background for the tracks, with lots of loud blaring horns and synths and the occasional dubstep-wobble he favored back then, and the result are 50 minutes of pretty coherent and pretty standard 2014 Trap beats. The album kind of lulls you in to expect greatness, though, with the opening stretch from the Intro to Kick Door being some of the hungriest tracks that Gucci had put out in quite a while at that point before it settles into it's usual rhythm. Well, take what you get, I guess. Oh, and, before I forget it, Bossed Up is an incredibly strange song mostly carried by Thug and Keyshia Ka'oir putting down some weird inflections on an unusually minimalist beat. Definitely give that a listen if you are curious.
If you're a Gucci fan, you will like this, if you're not, check the first three tracks and then move on. The Oddfather once again proves that Gucci was an incredibly consistent artist, if not necessarily impressive all of the time. But, given his output, he didn't have to be.
