Season 1 – The White Princess

      2017 History Drama List
76% Tomatometer 17 Reviews 86% Audience Score 50+ Ratings In a tale of power, family, love and betrayal, "The White Princess" -- adapted from Philippa Gregory's best-selling novel of the same name -- follows up the BBC/Starz miniseries "The White Queen." It's told from the perspective of three noblewomen waging an ongoing battle for the English throne at the conclusion of the War of the Roses. Promised in marriage to the newly crowned King Henry VII in hopes that it will unite the Kingdom, Princess Elizabeth (aka Lizzie) instead resents and plots against him. She matches wits and wills with Lady Margaret Beaufort, King Henry VII's mother, each maneuvering to gain his trust. Meanwhile, Lizzie's mother, Dowager Queen Elizabeth Woodville, struggles with rumors that her long-lost son Prince Richard is alive -- forcing Elizabeth into choosing between her new Tudor husband and the boy who could be her own blood and the rightful York King. Brad Newsome Sydney Morning Herald The costumes are amazing, the exposition dumps are impressively efficient, and while some of the interiors seem far too bright, at least they're not quite as blindingly lit as those of some other period dramas. Mar 28, 2018 Full Review Carol Midgley Times (UK) It's a soap opera in medieval robes with daytime-drama-style background music and the king's heavies storming houses shouting things such as: "I can smell the women!" Rated: 2/5 Dec 29, 2017 Full Review Shirley Li Entertainment Weekly The series grounds itself in the journey of its titular heroine with a sharp understanding of a new queen's difficult, often precarious position. Rated: B+ Apr 15, 2017 Full Review Angela L. Harmon The NitPic Nope. I don't know if it's period TV that's not right for me, or if I'm just not English, but man oh man I wasn't following any of it. Dec 11, 2019 Full Review Lacy Baugher The Tracking Board The White Princess is not historically accurate... But where it deviates, it does so creatively and in a way that proves the show really has something to say. Jun 23, 2018 Full Review Laura Hurley Oregonian I was on the edge of my seat while watching the first few episodes, and I could watch Essie Davis and Michelle Fairley attempt to outmaneuver each other all day long. Savannah G Jodie Comer! that is all that needs to be said! good story Jodie brings it home for the whole thing Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/07/23 Full Review Robert J Henry VII king is my 17th great grandfather! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/31/23 Full Review anne H Two words Jodie Comer. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/28/23 Full Review david p You really can't get enough of the Tudors, can you? Just 15 years ago (already!) we got Showtime's The Tudors, which evidently inspired this series. It's the same formula; a Renaissance-era soap opera with amazing costumes and history tweaked for maximum dramatic effect. If you like, this is the prequel to The Tudors, which started with Henry VIII in about 1513, this one here covers 1485 to 1495. Like its role model, this one dispenses with a certain amount of realism in depicting the king, neither series had an actor who looks like the relevant King Henry, nor do they age throughout the series. Henry VII actually looked rather like Putin, with a long thin face and straggly blondish hair. Apart from some quibbles with history (Jasper Tudor was not smothered with a pillow, Perkin Warbeck had no kiddies), and armor that is a Hollywood fantasy, the series does good job of illustrating the power plays in late medieval England. Since the original novel was written by a woman, the women get plenty of attention in this series and spend their time scheming, trying to outdo each other and outbitch each other. Some things never change. The series gives a pretty good feel for the period, where playing fast and loose with royal favor could be life- and body-shortening, but stick to a textbook for your school history exam. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Excellent experience 👏. Again like many period peicies clothing and some historical inaccuracies can make me cringe. Though if you're looking for a good watch with some history, romance and murder, look no further. Shout out to Jodie Comer, you never cease to amaze me with your acting.!! I really enjoy seeing you in this role. 💕 Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review jonny c Love Jodie Comer's acting so much, this series was highly enjoyable.
