Sandcastle Kindle Edition
Early morning on a perfect summer's day, people begin to descend on an idyllic, secluded beach. Amongst their number, a family, a young couple, a refugee and some American tourists. Its fine white sand is fringed with rock pools filled with crystal clear water. The beach is sheltered from prying eyes by green fringed cliffs. But this utopia keeps a dark secret. A woman's body is found floating in the waters - which brings these 13 strangers together to try and unravel the riddle of the sands and escape the beach alive in this tense, fantastical mystery.
From Booklist
By a tidal pool near a small beach on France’s Mediterranean coast, a North African–looking man glimpses a young woman stripping to swim. Later, but still early in the morning, three families intent on sunbathing and picnicking encounter the man, then find the girl’s corpse in the pool. One paterfamilias, a racist, xenophobic physician, angrily accuses the North African of murder and calls the cops. While awaiting the police, the doctor’s mother dies. The young children of two of the families start growing, the little ones right out of their swimsuits and the preteens into puberty. The adults are changing, too. Attempts to leave the area prove futile, and further calls don’t go through. At the rate they’re aging, they’ll all be dead by tomorrow morning. Peeters’ accomplished European realist comics style and Lévy’s utterly natural dialogue suit to a tee this maximally eerie, unsettlingly plein air exercise that Kafkaesquely defies all explanation. --Ray Olson --This text refers to the hardcover edition.

Review
"It's based on this graphic novel that I was given from my daughters," he said. "I read it, and the premise was so powerful, of these people that went to this beach and their experience that happens on that day in the beach… I thought it was very frightening and emotional, and the ideas just started coming, and I tracked down the owner, and the person that wrote it. It was just a beautiful thing, and kind of touching, that it came from my daughters, this story about getting older very, very quick.” -- M. Night Shyamalan ― Entertainment Weekly
"It’s an obscure graphic novel. This book gave me the opportunity to work through things like my parents’ getting older…” -- M. Night Shyamalan ― The New York Times
"A tight, taut tale." ― Forbidden Planet International blog review
"Begins like a murder mystery, continues like an episode of The Twilight Zone, and finishes with a kind of existentialism that wouldn't be out of place in a Von Trier film." -- Publishers Weekly ― starred review
"Sandcastle truly inspired my film Old. It is a profound mystery, sci-fi graphic novel that is illustrated so beautifully and with such humanity. Its themes of aging had me thinking about my parents and children and how quickly it all goes by. From the moment I read this I was changed.” -- M. Night Shyamalan
“Shyamalan adapted his disquieting tale from the graphic novel “Sandcastle,” by the French writer Pierre Oscar Lévy and the Swiss illustrator Frederik Peeters. As is frequently the case with French-produced bandes dessinées, “Sandcastle” is a stark existentialist parable.”—New York Times ― New York Times Published On: 2021-07-27 --This text refers to the hardcover edition.

I wanted to read this as it's the source of MN Shyamalan's film "Old". I have not seen the film, but the graphic novel is very enjoyable and, apparently, pared down vs the film. The novel considers something I've thought about before: after larval stage, a mayfly's *entire* lifespan is 24 hours. What if humans were the same? And, perhaps, *are* we the same?

It was an intense story with good characterization. I wish it went in depth about why. Adding color would also have made an impact.

Wild story. Very interesting. I wasn't sure what to expect, as I hadn't seen the movie yet... But wow. Just... Wow.

I did not enjoy reading this story. I was intrigued by the idea/concept at first. But as the story pushes forward, the sexualization of the young children and girls in the story took me out of it. If you are sensitive to the subjects of pedophilia or rape, I would avoid reading this story. The story graphic images of sex between children and is frankly a bit too disturbing for my taste. These images, coupled with the pedophilic dialogue take away from the overall story that the author is trying to convey. I think the idea is intriguing but the execution comes off as misogynistic and pedophilic. I would go so far as to say this graphic novel is an excuse to draw pictures of naked young, and I mean young, children having sex. I would not read this story again and would dissuade anyone thinking of reading it. I regret reading it and wish I could unsee some of the illustrations. Intriguing concept, but the execution crosses the line into unethical.

Great story. It was a bit hard to read due to the fact I couldn't download it to my Kindle program on my desktop.

A heartbreaking yet beautiful depiction of life, death and what we do with the time we have left.

Sandcastles reduces its protagonists to their purest forms, right down to their naked bodies. Without giving too much away, it’s a beautiful yet heartbreaking story about life, how it passes us so quickly, how we react to ageing, loss of innocence, innocence that’s held onto even as we grow up “too soon”, death and what we do with the time we have on this earth.

It starts like a lazy afternoon at the beach, and gradually grows into a fantastic tale of love and death. At the end, you’ll have more questions than answers.

Didn’t have a great ending but I enjoyed the concept. Reading this ahead of the new film that’s based on it.

Hmm… I have mixed feelings. The storytelling is great. The art has personality. It’s a bit disturbing. Do not expect explanations of what’s happening.

Strange but compelling…

I bought this graphic novel after seeing the trailer for “Old” by M Night Shyalaman, coming out as a film soon. The trailer intrigued me so I explored the internet and found that this is the source material. I didn’t know what to expect but was pleasantly surprised that the graphic novel is wonderfully bizarre and has some great characters that behave in a very human way to an inexplicable situation.
I will go and see the film as I hope that the director has explained more than the graphic novel does about the situation. The only let down of a great bit of creativity.
