Bryce Walker may have been the subject of 13 Reasons Why‘s big murder mystery, but he certainly wasn’t the only Liberty High School student whose life was cut alarmingly short in Season 3.
Montgomery De La Cruz also met a gruesome end behind bars, following his arrest for assaulting Tyler back in Season 2. And to complicate matters even further, Monty was posthumously blamed for killing Bryce, a plot hatched to prevent the real killers — Alex and (sort of) Jessica — from going to prison. It was an unfortunate conclusion to a tragic tale of child abuse and sexual confusion, among a myriad other unresolved issues.
TVLine caught up with actor Timothy Granaderos to discuss Monty’s less-than-favorable outcome, including whether there’s a chance we could see him in another form in the final season. (Come on, this show loves flashbacks. And ghosts!)
TVLINE | Did the producers sit you down ahead of Season 3 to explain where things were going for Monty?
I trust Brian Yorkey with every ounce of my being. He doesn’t always say what we’re going to be getting into, but he always alludes to something happening. So whenever he pulls me aside and asks me to take a walk with him, I’m like, “Oh, s–t, what’s going to happen?” When we were starting Season 3, he told me that Monty would be questioning his sexuality, then dying at the end, and I was like, “Whoa.” It’s like when you get a phone call from your parents. You’re like, “I don’t know if this will be good or bad, but they definitely need to tell me something.”
TVLINE | And how did you take that news?
It’s always a little shocking, but as an actor, you hope to get things that shock and scare you — and everything Monty did in Season 3 was shocking and scary. I’m grateful for the dimensions they added to Monty’s character.
TVLINE | This season required a lot from you. Was there a particular scene you found most challenging to perform?
You would have thought that the scene with Winston and I hooking up. When I read that, I knew it was going to be intense. It was a sex scene, and it’s always a little scary to put yourself out there like that, but it was ironically one of the easiest scenes for me to shoot. For Monty, it was just this moment of complete vulnerability, which he never has.
But in terms of the most difficult scene, I’d say it was when Monty’s dad visits him in prison in the finale. In preparation for that, I had to think about what his psyche would be like, and I just kept coming back to this feeling of being completely lonely. So on the day of the shoot, I kind of secluded myself and went to a really dark place. At the end of the scene, his dad spits in his face, and you’re just heartbroken for him.
TVLINE | He never got a chance to make amends before being murdered off screen. Do you feel like his story wasn’t truly over?
It did feel like it ended a little too soon, which was convenient for all those other ding-dongs who got away with the murder. There’s so much more to unpack with his story, and I think he was just beginning to understand who he was and what he wanted. It was a tragic ending to his story, but you never know what’s going to happen next.
TVLINE | Well, Winston is still out there — and he knows the truth!
Exactly!
TVLINE | Do you hope he speaks up in Season 4?
Hell yeah, of course! I hope he tears the whole establishment down and reveals everything. But at the same time, I’m also invested in the other characters as a fan, so I kind of want them to get away with it and move on. It’s been such a turbulent, tumultuous journey for them. Life at Liberty is stressful.
TVLINE | Is there a chance we haven’t seen the last of Monty? Even dead characters have a habit of lingering on this show.
I would like to think so, and with the way we tell our stories, it’s always a possibility. But I don’t really have an idea of what’s really going to happen. I do want to keep working, though!
TVLINE | If not, how do you hope Monty will be remembered?
I hope people will remember him as a complex kid who was trying to figure himself out, like anyone else. … It shouldn’t have happened to him. No matter what he did, he was a human, and this shouldn’t have happened. He did have this tough home life, and this secret he was keeping, and he was alone.
TVLINE | That reminds me — one of the lines that hit me the hardest was when Bryce was excusing Monty for assaulting Winston. Bryce told him, “He gets beat at home and s–t.” He said it so casually, but a good friend would have intervened.
You’re right. He says it in such a normal way, but that’s not a normal situation to be in. This kid is trying to grow and develop, and that’s what his normal is? Even to his friends, that’s what’s considered normal? What do you think is going to happen? What happened to Tyler in the bathroom was normal for him. It was a joke to him. We know that it wasn’t a joke — far from it — but if that’s what you’re made to believe is OK, you’re not going to have any regrets.
TVLINE | Oof, that bathroom scene…
That was easily the toughest scene I’ve shot on the show. I had a splitting headache at the end of that shoot. It’s hard staying in that. It’s a dark place to be in.
TVLINE | What’s next for you? Something intentionally different from what you’ve been doing lately?
Yes, I hope it’s completely different. I hope it’s so different that they don’t even realize I’m the guy who played Monty. It’s been an awesome journey, but you do wonder if people are only going to see you as the guy who did that thing to that kid. And that’s a constant struggle for actors — breaking the mold and changing the way other people see you.

Thank you for the huge spoiler, TVline ! I didn’t get to watch season 3 yet, but thanks to you guys I know Monty is going to die… Was it too much to put something else instead of Monty’s face next to THAT title ? Like, a picture of the whole cast for example ? Of the title ? The producer ? A lolcat ? So that at least, it doesn’t give away who’s going to die ? Please, kindly consider this next time… I do still love you though :)
Why did you read an article about something you have yet to watch? The page title, and the heading and the photo don’t give anything away, so you had to have keep reading past those points. If I hadn’t finished the season yet I would have stopped reading as soon as I got to “grim outcome”. Anyway the season was released nearly a month ago, and at best you are going to get spoilers everywhere within the first week.
I didn’t read the article, I just jumped to the commentary section to write my mini-rant. I still don’t know the specifics of this death.
The page title, the heading and the photo don’t give anything away ? Huh, right, okay. The title gives away that a character meets a “grim outcome”, and the picture that the article is about that particular actor… and that’s more than enough if you know how to put two and two together. And that’s my point : separately, these two elements are inconsequential, but put together, they do give away what probably is a big plot point of a season that’s only a month old.
And I think it’s fairly reasonable to expect spoilers on social media, Facebook and the likes, or even IRL with friends, but not on the front page a major professional television news site like tvline, at least not until you choose to read the article in question…
Peace out
*comments section, thank you autocorrect ^^
Okay, well I just watched the finale tonight. And I managed to not have it spoiled for me by averting my eyes when I saw something being said about 13 Reasons Why. I did know that something happened in the finale that upset a huge number of people. This is just one aspect of it, there’s a lot more, so definitely there’s a lot that hasn’t been spoiled for you. But to keep that the case you should probably get started on it and DON’T read any more stories!
Dude it’s been 3 weeks the grace period for spoiler is well over. It’s not tvline’s fault that you haven’t watched it
“Grim outcome” could mean a lot o things. Maybe he got in a fight in prison and is a paraplegic caused by damage to his spinal cord. Maybe he got re-sentenced and will spend the rest of his life in prison. He could’ve been forced into joining a prison gang or he could’ve been manipulated into killing a prison guard to ensure his own protection. I think some people just want to complain. I have only seen the 1st episode of the first season, but I know I’m probably going to encounter spoilers when I follow people in Instagram and Twitter and visit sites like TVLINE. It’s just common sense, folks.
I follow some of them including Tim, but if I saw them start talking about stuff I don’t want to know I just move to something else quickly, and for goodness sake don’t read articles or the comments after them. You’re asking for it.
I really hated his storyline this season. Spoilers people but …
Really? The homophobic bully & jock is actually .. gay? Wow twist. So he hooks up with Winston, beats the hell out of him and then Winston takes him back? I’m sorry but the show started to romanticise an abusive and toxic relationship to appeal to the young gay tumblr fan base. Can we stop fetishising this sort of behaviour in the gay community?
Season 3 felt like every episode tried to be scandalous purely for the sake of it.
I did like this season a lot. Much better than the previous one and Elite season 2.
One thing i like about this show is that every character is grey. Depends whose point of view, anyone can be good or bad.
Bryce and Monty were far from saints… the sad thing is that those who made them that way (their parents) would get a free pass… The Sins of the Parents are paid by the kids… I will love they got punnished. Specially Bryce´s dad.
Why is this still a show? Cancel Netflix.
I did like this season much better than last season. So many conflicting emotions. We want to hate Bryce and Monty, but then we see a bit of what makes them the way they are and we start to feel (at least a little) bad for them. Every single character on this show is neither all good or all bad. Even Zach, who arguably has the best character of any of them, contributed to Bryce’s death. (I mean, if Zach hadn’t broken his leg he wouldn’t have drowned probably.)
I do think it was very convenient that their scapegoat died in jail. Almost makes you wonder if it wasn’t a coincidence.
The kids had Monty killed in jail. That’s what Tony’s interaction with the cartel guy was about. The story wouldn’t work with Monty alive. That’s what made the ending even worse for me. They essentially killed both guys.
Why wouldn’t the ending work with Monty breathing.
monty deserves to be alive and Bryce is my man
Agreed that neither deserved that. I hope Winston sings. I love the characters but that was real messed up, you can’t go around killing people. I actually feel like there will be hell to pay in season 4. If not, what else would season 4 be about. I expect it will get super ugly. Alex’s dad knows that he killed Bryce.
