In Karen Marie Moning’s latest installment of the epic Fever series, Mac, Barrons, Ryodan, and Jada are back—and the stakes have never been higher or the chemistry hotter. Hurtling us into a realm of labyrinthine intrigue and consummate seduction, Feverborn is a riveting tale of ancient evil, lust, betrayal, forgiveness, and the redemptive power of love.

When the immortal Fae destroyed the ancient wall dividing the worlds of Man and Faery, the very fabric of the universe was damaged, and now Earth is vanishing bit by bit. Only the long-lost Song of Making—a haunting, dangerous melody that is the source of life itself—can save the planet.

But those who seek the mythic song must contend with old wounds and new enemies, passions that burn hot and hunger for vengeance that runs deep. The challenges are many: the Keltar at war with nine immortals who’ve secretly ruled Dublin for eons, Mac and Jada hunted by the masses, the Seelie queen nowhere to be found, and the most powerful Unseelie prince in all creation determined to rule both Fae and Man. Now the task of solving the ancient riddle of the Song of Making falls to a band of deadly warriors divided among—and within—themselves.

Once a normal city possessing a touch of ancient magic, Dublin is now a treacherously magical city with only a touch of normal. And on those war-torn streets, Mac will come face-to-face with her most savage enemy yet: herself.

I get now why he fucks with the single-minded devotion of a dying man hunting God. Sex with him is the closest thing to holy I’ve ever known. Barrons is my church. Every caress, each kiss, a hallelujah.

I'm sorry, but I'm just so over Mac and Barrons at this point.

Feverborn seems to be appealing to those Fever fans who hated the direction Moning took in Burned. To be honest, it does contain a lot of traditional Fever elements - Mac and Barrons screwing, alpha males posturing, Sinsar-Dubh issues, and Cruce, but that's why it left me feeling tired (and with a sense of deja vu).

Burned introduced the Jada story, which I personally found interesting. I thought it brought something new and fresh to a series that was being seriously milked to exhaustion. Feverborn, however, feels like a return to old, resolved plot lines that should be laid to rest.

Moning really has nothing new to say about Mac and Barrons, and Mac's many chapters were dull recaps of things we learned in the past, as well as a rehash of the Alina story line. The relationship between Mac and Barrons, plus the Sinsar-Dubh, plus Alina... this is what the first five books were about. I don't need to read it again. Wrap it up already.

The series feels stuck in a rut and I wonder if maybe it never should have been extended beyond the first five wonderful installments. The first five books all feel like one long story, moving fluidly into one another and leaving us desperate for more. At this point, I almost feel like I'm reading fanfiction, specifically written for those who can't let go.

I'm even tired of all the things I once loved. Some people find Mac annoying, but I always liked her character; now, I long for the chapters where she isn't narrating. I used to crave some Mac/Barrons sexy time, but the romantic angst has passed, leaving behind repetitive declarations about how amazing Barrons' penis is.
Barrons is a commando man. I love his dick. I love what he does to me with it. I adore his balls.

I mean, firstly, balls are freaking balls. Even Jericho Barrons' balls are just freaking balls. Secondly, I think there's something wrong with these two if they're literally gasping with desire each time the other speaks. Mac hears Barrons voice and she's wet, which I suppose is meant to be hot, but is really just something you should see a doctor about.

For me, Jada is the only remotely interesting thing now and even she can't hold this book up alone. Also, Ryodan's possessive alpha male crap is honestly more creepy and annoying than sexy. I still can't imagine them together. The only thing that could save the next book is if the focus turns to Jada, but the cliffhanger ending makes me think that won't happen (looks like another book of Mac and Barrons).

I feel like so much of this book is stuff I've read before. Maybe it works as a way of reminiscing for old school Fever fans, but I have rereads for that. I'll hold fire before preordering the next book.

Review:
Last year we had Burned, and to many it was quite a disappointment. Too much Mac, too little Dani, wtf happened with Dani, wtf happened to the excitement and action that were signature of Fever??
It looks like Feverborn is here to redeem it.
When the Hoar Frost King stole music, more specifically, musical frequency, on Earth, he left behind black holes that pose a grave threat to the existence of the world, including that of the Nine. With universal catastrophe at hand, immortals and humans alike temporarily join a tenuous bond to achieve a common cause: find the Song of Making.
In tandem with saving the world, Ryodan, Mac, and Dancer have one other priority: getting Dani back. But will they succeed?
POV: Feverborn was written from five points of view: Mac, Jada, Christian, Lor, and the occasional check-ins from the thing called Papa Roach. Perhaps it is my bias, but the chapters told by Mac were boring and tedious -- many of her musings detracted from the story's main attention. I get it, things aren't the same since you came to Dublin. Surprise surprise. Move on please. The saving grace to this was that Jada didn't have to sacrifice her page time for Mac. We saw nearly as much from her side of the story, and it broke my heart, the things she revealed about her time in Faery.
The characters in this book have definitely evolved in my eyes, especially Ryodan, Jada, and Dancer. Enigmatic, powerful, an asshat on the outside, But in truth, Ryodan is a man who cares about the world he lives in, the first to angle for the Nine's survival in the face of the black holes, and the man behind the alliances and the world saving plans. And when it comes to Jada/Dani, I devolve into a sobbing fangirling mess. I LOVE this man. Even more so now. The extent of his love for Dani is revealed, and this new tension-filled terrain he and Jada are exploring both crackles with electricity-- can I say tattooing sessions? -- and tinges with pain.
Jada came back the new version of Dani, but all is not what she appears to be. Jada is a feared and respected leader, and an integral part in this story's progression. She wasn't marginalized so don't worry. While dealing with outside matters, Jada continues to deals with the conflict blooming at an alarming rate inside her. In the silvers it was easy to pretend she didn't have emotions. Yet being back with the living proves the opposite, and I love seeing the glimpses of the old Dani in her, in her mind and in her arguments with Ryodan and Dancer. Dani/Jada really breaks my heart in this one. You truly never deserved any of it, Dani. It is way past time you find your own happiness. I am rooting for you.
Dancer! This brainiac kid warms my heart. Out of everybody, he seems to be the only person to accept Jada as she is, and acting as if she is still his oldest and dearest friend in the world. Dancer has formed a crew of his own, and I would love to see where they take the story. Perhaps they were the ones behind WeCare? I don't know. Dancer is no longer acting like a kid now that Dani is a woman. From the way he is pitted against Ryodan, it looks like a love triangle is there in the making. No problem. My man is coming out on top when that happens.
Barrons took a backseat. I love him still, but as KMM promised, for me at least, Ryodan has begun to eclipse him.
Daegus: juicy plot twists coming!

Feverborn was action packed with a good dose of emotional turmoil. I loved it and hope you will too. Now let the wait for Feversong commence!

Before Reading:
Okay KMM. After the train wreck that was Burned, I think it's time to to REALLY move on from Mac and let Dani tell her story. Mac's story has been told. Her problems should have been solved by now if she were truly the badass warrior the 5 original Fever books painted her to be. Her relationship with Barrons does not need anymore forced tension, because we all know they ain't gonna break from some childish misunderstanding.

Dani and Ryodan are the ones with actual stories to tell. Let them have their books please.

This book made me into this:
description
After the shit storm that was Burned KMM renewed my faith in Feverborn! Before reading Feverborn I was begging KMM for more Dani/Jada and we definitely got a lot more of her. Jada and Mac had the two main POV’s. Though it felt like Mac had more (or maybe it only felt that way because mac’s scenes are dull and hard to get through for me).
If you are someone who like me was disappointed by the handling of Dani in Burned I really suggest reading this book. The Jada scenes were honestly heartbreaking and I kept breaking out into tears lol. KMM handles the whole Jada/Dani thing sooooo much better than I was expecting. Sorry for doubting you KMM I’ll go eat shit now lol.

I was really unsure what to rate this book after reading it. I feel seriously conflicted. Half the book I LOVED! The Jada scenes completely enthralled me and I wanted to give them five stars. But I’m not going to lie to you Mac’s POV is still tedious as f*ck and I nearly dozed off reading her parts, as a consequence half the book is like 1 star for me. I flat out LOVED parts of this book and hated others. I think this book was overall like a 3.5 for me.

I really hope that next book Mac becomes a side character with limited secondary POV because honestly her and Barrons scenes are soooo boring. I just felt like skipping through their parts please stop re-visiting them. I think I speak for a lot of people when I say please give Dani and Ryodan the full time that they deserve.

What I loved:

Dani/Jada/bae:
description
My poor girl. I honestly thought I couldn’t love Dani more than I already do. But what do you know? I adored seeing Jada deal with the vulnerabilities that neither Dani from Iced or Burned would admit to. Her recount of Faery was psychedelic and made my heart hurt for Dani all at once. I was worried how KMM would write an older Dani since part of what made Dani Dani was her youthful exuberance.

I see where you are going with this KMM and I like it so much. Dani is both incredibly strong and untouchable in this book but you see how fragile she has become emotionally after her odyssey in hell. When Dani was talking about how hard she worked just to be able to make it back to Dublin and her sadness when everyone started rejecting her, I just wanted to reach into the book and give her a big ol’ hug. :’(

Jada/Dani is not the Dani in Iced exactly nor is she the Dani in Burned but she is all the better for it.
She’s, “a woman who’d been through hell and made it back by sheer force of will and the skin of her teeth,” still harbouring the battle scars both psychologically and literally. Watching her work through and slowly acclimate to being able to feel again is a journey I can’t wait to keep going on (hopefully with Ryodan along to help).

Ryodan:
description
Feverborn Ryodan punches Burned Ryodan in the face. I love him more now than ever!
In this book we see how deep his devotion is for Dani. He’s not holding anything back now. My favourite aspect of him in Feverborn is that he’s not rushing Dani into anything he’s just learning how to interact with her again. Easing them both into a new phase of their relationship built on mutual respect and a few private tattoo sessions... ;)

For me Ryodan has completely blown Barrons out of the water. He completely reclaimed himself in the Also did anyone else find it so funny when Ryodan thought Dani had a So awkward but he didn’t give a shit he still wanted her. I loved it so much when he admitted he Dani straight away no hesitation. When Dani/Ryodan do get together at least we know he won't be too chicken shit like Barrons to say the words cause he's too cool for feelings.

Fav Ryodan quotes:

Shazam:
I fell in love with this character straight away. The way we got to see Dani’s tender side made my heart melt. They were a team of two and I think you need to read about their relationship yourself so I won’t spoil anything. I’ll leave you with my favourite quote from these two.

What I didn’t like:

Mac’s POV.
Someone so help me god. If Mac mentions one more time that she is from Georgia where magnolia lined paths reside in the rich provincial southern hick town and she drinks iced tea with her daddy I will kill a bitch. Her constant references to Georgia and her never ending Mac-ologue. Just make me want to say:
description
Mac as a character was a lot better than Burned Mac but her dull monologue almost makes me hate her anyway. Also what is up with her constantly recapping past events? Like we were there with you no need to remind us over and over again what happened. I highly doubt too many people think it’s a good idea to start a non-episodic 8+ book series on the 8th book. You don’t need to spell it out for us! Gahhh.

The Alina plotline:
So boring. I would prefer it if she stayed

Mac and Barron's constant sex scenes:
I know some readers were thirsty for Mac Barrons getting it on, but for me these scenes just were really boring to read. Like we get it u guys bone all day. But let's move on to a different POV please. We don't have to see them have sex like 3 times in one book. I used to love seeing them bone in Shadowfever but I think I’m SO over Mac and Barrons tbh. It’s like watching your embarrassing aunt and uncle start doing it in public or something. Just awkward and uncomfortable. Mac and Barrons constantly doing it on bookshelves just makes me roll my eyes.

I still don't like how Mac and Barrons relationship is basically violent revenge fucking and silent eye conversations. They are like the jersey shore couple of the series sometimes. This is another reason why I love Dani and Ryodan so much. You just know that there already is and will continue to be more than just sex holding those two together. And in the book it seemed like KMM was trying to convince the reader that Mac was totes fine with their sexationship but it seemed really off to me? Like jesus christ Barrons you spend half your day knee deep in her vag. I think you can let her call you her boyfriend.

Things I was interested in - 4 chapters from Jada's POV, Shazam, 1 Lor's chapter (he was having sex in it, naturally), 1 chapter from the Seelie Queen's POV. The rest - all Mac's chapters - should have been thrown out. And yes, grandpa moaning on in her chapters, pretending to be sexy Barrons didn't help the case either. Not an ideal experience overall. Just two more to go.
_______
I am continuing to read for Dani (and maybe Lor - there is just something very fun about this dumbass).

I never thought I would get sick of Mac and Barrons, but I really am. It's like we are treading the same water with these two - they have the same conversations, deal with the same problems and have the same sex. It's tiresome and old news. So it's no surprise that the first half of Feverborn was such a boring drag - the same old Mac moaning on and on about the Book and Alina. I can't say that the new audio narrators were a help either. Their voices were extremely distracting and poorly suited to the characters, in addition to failing at accents and sexiness. (I am not even going to go into the Phil Gigante/KMM drama - it didn't enhance my experience of Feverborn either, just confirmed how poor KMM's and some of her fans' judgment in regards to sexualizing minors.)

Once I gave up on audio, and Dani and Lor finally got some chapters, my reading experience improved greatly and even left me wanting to read the next installment.

Really, these new series of Fever books should have been about Dani. Her personal story is turning out to be quite compelling, despite my icky feelings about her possible pairing with Ryo. I also wish her story was not wrapped into the same old Book/Alina package.

2.5 stars. It's time for me to finally admit that I've been in denial.

I wanted to believe that the series was still chugging along and doing fine. I defended it. I babied it. I noted the hiccups, then focused on the positives. Until we got to this book.

Feverborn read like there was originally a different story which had been scrapped. I can't quite put my finger on why, but I don't feel like it melded as well into the entire arc. Maybe this is because KMM is still recovering from adding the Dani PoV, then deciding to scale it back from the original plan. Whatever the cause, I just didn't gel with this installment. It took me months to read my way through.

Some people were excited that Feverborn had more similarities to the original 5 books, but I felt like we were going backward to move forward. Simply put - I don't care about Mac anymore. She bores me, and I don't need the crutch of her as my main character to carry the series. Yeah, yeah. I know...there's the issue of the Sinsar Dubh that isn't going anywhere, and we know that Mac has a destiny regarding the book, so she has to be there. But I still can't shake the feeling that so much of what's being written for Mac now was retrofitted to replace other directions that the story could have/should have gone. Poor Jada . We'll never really get to know her on the level that we could have.

And I feel like I'm missing something here, but will someone explain why I will say though that the scene with Ryo and the fire...*swoon*.

There's still time for KMM to tie up all of her loose ends, but with the series coming to a close soon, I don't know if I'll ever be fully satisfied, when some characters (Christian, Dani, Cruce, etc.) never got the page time that the story called for. Maybe a spin-off would fix this. I wouldn't argue against more time with the rest of the characters, especially The Nine.

Well this was a vast improvement on Burned.

Also, 2 for 2 on my wish list! *fistpump*

And that Thing with Jada? (I'm pretty sure once you've read the book you'll know what Thing I am referring to) Well damn if that didn't make my small heart grow three sizes today.

However, the Alina Plot Twist of the book was a huge disappointment. To me, it felt like KMM was running out of plot lines, and took a page from Writing Soap Operas for Dummies. If it was going to have been A Thing, I feel like it would have been brought up sooner, instead of coming from nowhere towards the end of the series.

When I first started reading this, I started to believe in the Fever series I remembered and loved. This book had action, legit fight scenes, new twists from Mac's past/present, unseelie prince powers, a big emphasis on the Sinsar-Dubh, hot sex with Barrons! Basically, it had a lot to make me happy and reminiscent as to why I loved this series so much, and how my heart utterly broke while reading Burned. The start of this book gave me hope and that made the fall so much harder.

This book will make you feel like you had too much to drink, called your ex, and you slept with him. Maybe the hook up won't feel bad while hooking up, but afterwards you'll feel dirty as fuck. I was blinded by the actual hooking up of this book, but then I woke up the next morning and realized how stupid I was.

For those of you who don't know, the last 11% of this book is an index for the reader to get caught up, or updated, on the events that took place in the previous seven books and the characters we've met along the way. Even though I knew this, the abrupt end of chapter thirty-six still felt like someone threw a bucket of ice water on me. I don't even want to call it a cliffhanger; it was just an abrupt and uncalled for ending.

I read 436 pages just to be slapped in the face with the last chapter. All that fluff I was talking about at the beginning of this review, was only there to try to distract me of the fact that this book has no real plot. There are loose ends, waiting to be explored, but nothing actually happens until chapter thirty-six when we get blue-balled.

This is Feverborn (spoilers ahead, so please don't continue if you haven't read):

Remember the cliff-hanger ending of Burned where we find out about black holes that are going to essentially suck up all of Dublin? Yeah, it's still a huge problem, but nothing happens. Not one fucking thing happens in this book to help or give the reader a better understanding on the black holes. They are just there, waiting to be dealt with in another book. They suspect that maybe the Sinsar-Dubh's Song of Making will help.

Dani/Jada lets Ryodan tattoo her, like Barrons tattooed Mac in previous books, because she is scared of being lost and wants power over him (what?). Ryodan tells her he loves her, which was really out of place and really fucking awkward. We learn nothing about the events that happened to Dani/Jada Silver-side. We get a confusing new character that Dani/Jada met in the Silvers, but he, too, won't be addressed until the next book.

No explanation on this new Alina twist. She's back, because apparently Mac's subconscious, and the Sinsar-Dubh living inside her, resurrected her. Mac is no longer invisible, and has really good sex with Barrons that "grounds" her and makes her able to think better. Oh, and when Barrons tells Mac that she's not his girlfriend, I wanted to fucking kill someone. Can we NOT do this rodeo again? Like, please.

Lor and Jo keep having sex, even though Jo doesn't want to, she just can't help herself. But it's cool, he's going to "teach her" how to use her mind, and she can pay him in sex. This is "okay", because she really wants it. What and the fuck am I reading?

Someone is writing The Dublin Daily, and making all our main character's lives much harder. I really like this mystery and was very sad that it wasn't addressed.

The Nine let Christian know that Dageus isn't dead. Christian is still a shining white light in this book for me. He's always helpful, and devoted to whatever he believes in. He helps Mac and the Abbey big time in this book. I still love him, and wish there was more of him in this book.

Cruce is working with the roach god to try to get free from the Abbey. The Abbey was under attack, but all is well and Cruce is supposedly safe underneath it still.

Dancer, from Iced, is back and introduces Dani/Jada to his smart friends who are trying to fix the black holes. I love Jane E's review, because of the theorycrafting on Dancer's parents!

Then the last 1% of this book, the Sweeper gets Mac and Dani/Jada so it can "fix" Dani's heart and Mac's brain. Mac finds the Sinsar-Dubh inside her and reads it, because she believes in good magic, and she and Dani really need to get the hell out of this situation. The Sinsar-Dubh starts taking over, and *curtains* the book ends. The last 1% of this book is amazing and worth reading, the rest is fluff and KMM trying to pull wool over your eyes.

Can I please just have my Iced sequel? I never thought I'd say this, but I'm fucking sick of Mac and Barrons. Their series should have ended at Shadowfever, and I'm sick of reading this sorry excuse of Dani's/Jada's story.

In addition to my favorite series being dead, with no signs of coming back, this article is pretty disgusting, too.

So, I finish Feverborn last night and I have to say it wasn't as bad as Burned but it wasn't as good as Iced. It was just
I enjoyed parts of Feverborn and I almost gave it three stars but the parts I didn't enjoy out weighed the parts I did sadly. KMM is beating a dead horse. Mac and Barrons.

Their story is done so please

The whole thing with was bit of a stretch to keep them relevant. Mac is too obsessed with Barrons's d!ck its ridiculous. Mac and Barrons serve no purpose to the story. They feel like filler to me. Even Jada mentions Mac's internal dialogue:
"Mac, stop thinking so much. It's probably why it wants to to work on your brain. You have all the that internal monologue going on all the time."

The ending with Mac

So this book was suppose to be about the black holes left behind by the Hoar Frost King right?? Why is this hardly talk about?? Why was this not solved or close to being figured out?? This is another problem for me. Plot and subplots. Subplots help the story progress and even give you clues about the main plot. Not a whole a lot happen during this book.

Lor & Jo. Look. Hands down I love Lor. BUT WTF is up with this story line? I would like Lor and more of the to have more screen time but I don't care for Lor having sex with Jo, I don't care about her mental filing system. Its just a waste of a good subplot.

Ryo & Jada. This story line weighed heavy on my heart and made me

OMG. I thought Jada was cold and unflattering in Burned but in Feverborn I really warmed up to her. Jada mentions that its harder to keep her emotions in check now that shes back home. We got to learn about some of her time Silverside. Silverside is what Jada calls being in Faery for five and a half years. Unfortunately, she didn't leave Silverside unscathed and was left with mental and physical scars. Freeze frame is now slipstream btw. I'm pretty sure if this whole book would have been all about them with Christian and Dancer this would have been a five star rating. I definitely see some of the same attributes between Dani and Jada. Dani had a hard time fitting in and feeling wanted. Now, back as Jada she's having the same problem.
"Five and a half years, most of it alone. Before that, fourteen years, eternally misunderstood. Back in Dublin, in charge of over five hundred sidhe-seers, and growing everyday. Still alone. Still misunderstood."
The only one who seems okay with her is Dancer.
Dancer replied. "Rule number one about the Mega: you take her as she is or don't get her at all. Try to cage her with boundaries and she'll go into full battle mode."

And
"Your rejection of Jada stems from how guilty you feel about what happened to her and that's all about your hang-ups, not hers. Stop looking at it like it's a bad thing and see what she has to offer. Most of all, give her time. We have no clue what she went through. Dani was gone five years plus change and she's only been back a few weeks. Might take her a few minutes to acclimate."

Thanks Dancer for opening my eyes too.

And my Ryo YASS! Barrons never came out and said it!!

Jada storyline with Ryo, Dancer, Christian is the only part of the book is worth the read. This storyline is the only time I could feel that Karen put her heart and soul into it. Everything else is filler, stupid, or not needed. I really want to know what happens with these character but not at the expense of being in Mac's head again and again. So time will tell if I continue this series.

So four years and two books later I feel this series is going down hill. Get to the point KMM. Wrap it up!! If you would have let Mac go and let the new characters shine you would have had another masterpiece. I loved the original Fever series and held each new series I came across to the "Fever standard". I recommended them to everyone but this isn't the same KMM writing I came to love.

And if you need to know whats going on with audio narrative: http://bibliodaze.com/2016/01/defendi...

So its a new year. 2016. Feverborn will be out in about two weeks and I've had a change of heart...I guess. I had previously stated that I wouldn't be picking this up but I want to see if Moning fixed the mess that was Burned

Burned (Fever, #7) by Karen Marie Moning .

I could care less about Mac and Barrons problems. I'm still holding out hope that Dani "Mega" O'Malley comes speeding back into my book world brandishing her sword, making Batman jokes, and busting Ryodan chops. But with lack of teasers and snippets and Moning keeping this book under lock and key, my faith in her has diminished greatly. I'll say it again: Mega DESERVED her own story!!!

We have a blurb....and I think Dani lost her story. She deserved her own story.

"Mac will come face to face with her most savage enemy yet: herself."

Ugh...

3.5 Okay I'm Listening Stars

Hmmm….I think that KMM is like Adam Sandler to me in that I loved some of his early movies, so much so that I can quote most of them but then he made movies like Jack and Jill, Click and The Ridiculous 6 and I ask myself, ‘Why do you keep watching his movies?’ and the answer is simple… I’m hoping he can recapture some of that magic and it will be great again . The Same goes for KMM...I'm waiting for her to recapture some of the Fever greatness I used to love.

Fever 1-5 – Perfection!!! I loved every second of those books and have read them numerous times.

Iced – Left me cold

Burned – Totally bombed. Crashed and burned.

Feverborn – Not completely redeemed but maybe we are rising from the ashes.

The pacing is so much better, the plot made sense most of the time, the characters and dialogues worked well and finally I felt like there was some direction to the story. There is still some meandering though with characters and plots that were barely touched on like: Katarina and Kasteo who are just briefly mentioned. Lor and Jo who had some of the best page time. The Unseilie Prince and his Queen Aoibheal, there is only one chapter with them and it was actually one of my favorites in the book but it was really brief and it was one of the things I was most interested in.

Barrons and Mac - Mostly they are back to themselves in this. Mac still waxes on poetic about her past, Georgia, her parents, Barrons, the cost of tea in China….okay maybe not that last one but it is book 8 you know how she can be. It was a little too much sometimes for me and I wondered why we needed all that head time.

That said Barrons is the shit. I loved him and how he is with her. They seem to have a relationship more like equals now and they have found their own special brand of give and take. Plus the chemistry between them is always pretty hot. However the sex between them wasn’t quite as graphic in this as it have been in the past *sad face*. Still it is clear that even though Mac isn’t one of the 9 technically Barrons will always be there for her.
“You still could have gone without me.”
“I bloody fucking know that.” He cut me a seething glance.
“Then why didn’t you?”
“Because, Ms. Lane, when the world goes to bloody hell, I will always be at your bloody side."

Ryodan - He is a strong second to Barrons in all things male and sexy. It has been clear for a while that he has had a plan for Dani/Jada and it appears that he is pushing to get closer to that goal all the time. While I like the time we get with Barrons and Mac I’ll have to admit that I was far more interested in all things Ryodan and Jada. There conversations and the dance they have going on. While I’m pretty sure what Ryodan’s end game is I’m loving the journey and finding Ryodan to be a pretty deep well to plumb.
"Change your mind Jada, don’t be a fool. It won’t cost you anything. Let me be your anchor, I’ll never let you be lost again.

Jada was actually the most interesting character in this entire story. Her perceptions of the people around her and how she is trying to keep emotional distance were fascinating to me. I loved being in her head as an adult. She even has a new friend that while a little strange, as interdimensional beings are want to be, it was an interesting twist to Jada’s story and a little heartbreaking at times. Jada’s character was the one that totally broke my heart a little.

Honorable Mentions to Dancer and Christian. I even like their page time a little more and Mac’s on occasion. Dancer gave some great insight into Jada and I’d almost be pulling for him, except I like the Ryodan/Jada combo better. He is brilliant but I’m still waiting for the other shoe to drop on what/who he really is. Christian might have his Unseelie side under better control now and that makes him a little less on the crazy side but definitely a powerful allie to have on your side.

The Rest of the Story

Well there was one sorta…The holes left by the Hoarfrost king are becoming bigger and acting like black holes so the entire world is in danger and might be destroyed. It comes out why this might be of interest for the Fae and the Nine or Ten as the case may be. Then there is Cruce who is always looking for a way out of his cage and might have found one. Some strange stuff going on with We Care spreading rumors about Mac, Jada and the Nine. Also Papa Roach has something up his sleeve and we even get a roach PoV in this. There are also some other crazy things a foot and I’m not sure what to think of those at all. Also don’t forget about the Sinsar Dubh that is in Mac’s head it is bound to cause a little trouble here and there.

There were some twists I didn’t see coming and a cliffhanger that while not as bad as the one at the end of FaeFever or Dreamfever it was still pretty bad and left me with a lot of worry for Mac going forward.

Audio Note - Luke Daniels and Jill Redfield were great narrators in this. They played well off each other and I really liked their interpretation of Feverborn.

Sometimes all you can do is just cry. Nothing else.

Karen Marie Moning is wreaking havoc on my life people. Reading the last two chapters of feverborn and i was just like,

description

And the worst thing is, I knew it was coming. Every flippin book this women has ever written, without fail like clock work, i always get this feeling of absolute dread while reading the last two chapter because i know it will end in a cliffhanger. And me being my idiotic self, devours the book in one sitting and then i have to wait until the next year for the next installment to come out.

Every fuckin time without fail.

Why did i think it would be different this time around? WHHHHHYYY!!!!

AFTER

Well, for better or for worse, Karen Marie Moning has clearly listened. Now, I'm not going to pretend that this was as good as the original books. But it sure is a step in the right direction after Burned. Which, by the way, I found incredibly entertaining but recognize it was nothing like KMM's storytelling at the beginning of the series.

WARNING, this review is going to be full of minor spoilers. I'm not going to spoil anything major without marking it, but if you want to go in blind go away.

You may be wondering (or not, but I'm going to tell you anyway) why I actually gave Burned a higher rating than this. First, I'm trying to establish a more conscious rating this year. I've become used to giving everything five stars, with its own subrating. Also, even if was further away from what I loved about Darkfever, it was more fun than this one. Which leads me to my problem with this book.

The main plot is, to put it lightly, boring as fuck. The premise is that the black holes that were formed when blah blah are expanding and blah blah everyone is going to die. The Unseelie King is MIA, the Seelie Queen doesn’t remember shit, the Song of Making is lost, Cruce is plotting evil, the Nine and Christian are dealing with the Tenth, Lor and Jo are like highschoolers, Mac and Jada are having an identity crisis, AND COCKROACHES ARE THE TRUE EVIL.

I think the big issue is that we know they’re going to make it. If the black holes do succeed to absorb the Earth, everyone is lost. Humans, Fae, even the Nine. So, essentially, it just ain’t happening. We already know how everything is going to end. Mac and Barrons are going to keep on fucking, Ryodan and Jada are going to start fucking, Lor and Jo are going to accept they don’t want to ever stop fucking, and the Unseelie King is going to remind the concubine just how much she used to love fucking.

If nothing else, that is most likely going to be the endgame, and for that to happen Earth simply cannot disappear. So every repetitive talk about black holes and how Dublin always survives is pretty much redundant. We know, Mac. It’s your city, your planet, your home. And it’s not going anywhere.

That aside, I did enjoy a lot of things about the book. I love the characters, and KMM has brought them back. The annoying Jada/Dani, lovesick Mac and Barrons, creepy Christian, everything that was wrong with Burned isn’t there anymore. For the most part. And this is the breakdown.

MAC (AND BARRONS)

I was never the biggest fan of Mac, but it was sort of nice to have back the character I loved/hated from the very beginning. Inner monologues, right or wrong debates, gossipy nature. I feel like the problem is that her story was over. This book tackles the same issue that Shadowfever did. Will the Book make me evil? Can the Book control me? Revisiting the subject just kind of invalidates her previous battles with it.

What I did relish on was her relationship with Barrons. The previous book tried to make them into a parody of themselves, and I didn’t like it. Now they’re them again. Not a couple, but together. Not telling each other everything, but at each other’s side no matter what. Mrs. Lane and Barrons on the streets, Mac and Jericho on the sheets.

JADA/DANI (AND HER BAES)

Maybe the biggest disappointment of the last installment was having lost the Mega and not understanding how or WHY. In this book, Jada’s POV was one of my favorites. Like everyone else in the books and off them, I was mad that I had lost young, fearless Dani and I took it out on Jada. But the truth is, Dani is Jada. A grown up version, the wonderful woman we all that had faith in her knew she would one day become.

The little things we find out about her years in the Silvers are heartbreaking. And yet they make this Jada character real, a leading player in the game. Dani was a fun secondary part, that one voice that put light into the dark moments. Jada has Dani’s strength and relentlessness, but with discipline and a clear mind.

For a moment she was fourteen again, looking up at him. And she suddenly understood and acknowledged what she used to feel. The teen had suffered an intense crush on Dancer. The superhero had been utterly infatuated with Ryodan. They'd become her world when Mac had turned her back. She had felt safe being with Dancer. Yet Ryodan had made her feel safe.

As for the “love triangle”, well, I can only sigh. He’s a great guy, but Dancer has as much of a chance with Jada as Christian or V’lane did with Mac. Moning herself said that Ryodan is supposed to be the new Barrons. Jada and Ryodan’s relationship is right up this author’s alley. And since Ryodan is right up my alley, I’m happy. Sue me.

Dancer was better for the kid, perhaps. But Ryodan is for the woman. No right or wrong, just is. Like Mac and Barrons, I believe that when they find the right spot they will just click. After all, Ryodan is the one Jada is mad at for not finding her when she wa slost, even if it doesn't make sense. And Ryodan is the one the least and somehow most accepting of the "new" Dani. He's the one who's never going to let go, no matter what the fuck she turns into. They push each others buttons, look forward to be pushed. Jada may be colder now, but their bickering is just as entertaing as it used to be. And, whether they like it or now, they trust each other more than they do anyone else.

However, how they will keep them, well, eternally together, that I want to see.

LOR (AND JO)

This couple makes me so giddy. They’re fun and surprising, a ray of sunshine among so much shit going on. Lor’s POV made me smile in a way only Lor can. I love the way he simply cannot understand how women are so complicated, which is why he is shocked that the woman he can’t get out of his head is one of the most complicated ones.

Yet, we see another side of him. After all, this is a creature that has lived over a millennia. Hot, straight-forward and incredibly smart, Lor will not be denied. Even if to conquer Jo, he might have to do more than, well, fucking. Buses, clits and more, one of my favorite POVs.

CHRISTIAN

Much like Jo, Christian has made a comeback. I’m falling for him all over again, a Highlander who simply has the worst luck ever. Everything just keeps happening to this guy, but he’s riding the wave. He’s one of the few characters whose future truly intrigues me because I have no idea what’s next. Further identity crisis? A vampire will bite him? The Nine will save him? Personally, I all in for him falling for the Fae Princess that was suspiciously absent in this book. They can reign Faery together and have lots of beautiful babies.

THE CLIFFHANGER

I mean, it could and has been worse. The heart/brain metaphor certainly wasn’t lost on me. But, while it left me wanting for more, it’s not like someone died or was gang-raped, you know. Not even fake died.

BEFORE

Would you look at that? I'm actually excited for this.

Pointless. Plotless. I feel nothing.

I had a cathartic low with this series during Burned, I let it all out in my review and made peace with the loss. My expectations were hovering around "trash heap" for this book, I knew it would center around Mac, and Dani would be an odd after though of awkward proportions. I was correct. Essentially, nothing happens aside from a desperate attempt at character development, similar to a first book in a long series, so it feels out of place.

Mostly, I spent my time disinterested and mildly bored. You ever get back with someone who has cheated on you? They tell you all the things you want to hear, remind you of how good it was in the beginning, then shower you with love and attention. For a short while you remember, you feel it and then you go out to eat and all you hear is how loud he breaths, his once charming strong chin now looks comically out of place, and his jokes are childish and offensive. All the sudden you have no idea what you were thinking. He is trash. He is behind you. He is irrelevant.

That's precisely how I feel about this book. I'll read the rest of the series, for the same reason you don't unfollow him on Instagram.

Me after reading Feverborn

goes on to rampage more...

Feb 5, 2016

I have finished my rampaging, so I can finally write a semi-coherent review of Feverborn.

The book gods didn't grant my wish for a better installment in Feverborn. Better than Iced & Burned at least, which is really not asking all that much, but it still failed that.

I held on to hope that this will be the book that corrects all the shitty stuff that happened in the last book, but hoo boy, NOPE. This won't be a long review because nothing much happens to Feverborn anyway.

Primary of my gripes really is the fillers. Too many damned fillers. Number 1 most annoying filler is Mac's mooning over Barrons and how damned sexy he is. I expected as much that there'll be dirty sex scenes for Mac and Barrons, but her panting over his body is just so overdone. It's ridiculous. Like she can't just jump his bones anytime.

Number 2 is the posturing between the characters. It's been firmly established in previous books that all of our main characters and most supporting characters are badasses, but the posturing gets old fast.
Ryodan growls.
Barrons does chests flexes.
Jada freeze frames.
Mac curses.
Christian stares daggers.
Dancer poses handsomely.

I don't even fucking know anymore. There are black holes threatening to implode and the Earth along with it, and the fifteen people who can do something about it are too busy with their pissing contest. Let's just declare everyone a badass and work on the real problems okay?

Number 3 everything Mac inner monologue stuck on a fucking loop. It's the same old introspection about Alina, the Sinsar Dubh and Barrons. Aren't we done with Mac yet? Christian got an awesome character upgrade here but it's barely talked about because dammit we haven't finished with Alina apparently.

Then there's this Jada thing. I hate her, bring Dani back. You remember Dani right? The one with the wild curly hair, volatile temper who said feck all the time. I loved that kid, I do not love this automaton KMM has replaced her with. I have never really cared to review any of the Fever books before so I never got to express my displeasure with this character development. It's like she replaced Dani with Jada, so she can be a pair for Ryo without turning him to a pedo ala Humbert Humbert.

Lastly...

They are no closer to resolving their most pressing problem which is the imploding black holes, yet sub-plots just keep piling up. None of which are tied up. Perhaps if some of the Barrons' balls worship pages were invested instead on story development, then I wouldn't be ranting right now.

If you’re reading this and haven’t read the other books in the series, SHAME ON YOU! But also, if you’re contemplating on starting this series by reading this review be warned that some events that could be considered spoilery may be mentioned in this review. You’ve been warned.

First off, I want to say that every time I pick up a Karen Marie Moning book I am once again reminded of how epic this world is. Not only is Moning’s writing gripping and all-consuming, but her characters simply leap off the pages of this book. There are characters in this series that you may love or you may hate deeply. More often then not, you’ll grow frustrated with something a character does in this series but I always like to remind people, there is still more to come. The story isn’t finished yet and you will get your answers. Perhaps you may even change your mind about certain characters. Nevertheless, there is no doubt that Moning can make you feel a full range of emotions when reading her books.

As I read FEVERBORN, I grew crazed. I started talking to myself, whispering, “Oh my god” over and over as I read certain scenes. Despite the current predicament Mac is in with humans the trying to kill her and the whole black hole mess they need to clean up, Mac is stronger than ever. Surprisingly, her relationship with Barrons is even more so. For all you readers who have been wanting Moning to explore more of the romance between Mac and Barrons throughout the series, she does in this one. She gives us those raw moments, those infuriating ones but she also delivers on those steamy ones. Hell, I’m getting all hot just thinking about it again!

The big change she made in the last book with Dani is fully explored in this one. Mac and the rest of the crew are having a hard time accepting Jada but there are a couple of people who are glad to see her back and will take her any way they can get her. This strange, dangerous thing between her and Ryodan is heating up and I LOVED watching it unfold. I will admit, I didn’t like Jada in the last book. She was too cold, too detached from the wild Dani we all knew and loved. But the Jada in this book surprised me. We see more of her vulnerabilities, her wants and desires and I found myself relating to her character way more than I have ever before. Before I was just tolerating her until the return of Dani. Now I am quickly understanding why KMM did what she did with her character.

KMM is not only a master at words but I truly believe she excels are writing heroes. The Highlanders, the Nine, Christian, Dancer, Ryodan. And of course, the one that beats them all – Jericho Barrons. They’re an infuriating bunch, yes, but I just adore the way they can be all alpha but soften that tiny bit when in the presence of a woman they love. They don't often show that they care but when they do…just try not melting into a puddle of goo.

This is one of my favorite series with Ryodan:

“Let me tattoo you.” He was silent a long moment then said, “Jada.”

She went utterly still, not liking him this way, not trusting this at all. He was being direct, noncaustic. Treating her as if she was exactly what she was – a woman who’d been through hell and made it back by sheer force of will and the skin of her teeth. He was calling her by her chosen name. Asking her to “allow” him to do something. No longer berating her for not being who he wanted her to be. Offering his protection. No longer jabbing at her or giving her anything to fight.

She didn’t know how to deal with this man without fighting him. “No,” she said.

“At least carry the phone.”

She regarded it as if it were a snake that would bite her the instant she reached for it. “It’s a little late to start worrying about me.”

“I always worried about you.”

And because I get a lot of crap at UTC for loving a bastard like Barrons, I have to include a line that fully encompasses why I love him. In this scene Ryodan is telling Barrons to stop Mac from eating Unseelie. His response?

“She makes her own decisions,” he said.

Ah, finally a man who not only can appreciate a woman but sees her as something of an equal. A partner. Nothing gets sexier than that!

I urge you to read this series if you haven’t already. FEVERBORN is a masterpiece of epic proportions. With this book, Karen Marie Moning shows us exactly why she is such an indispensible writer in the genre.

In the past year, Dublin had transformed from an everyday urban dwelling with a touch of magic to a chillingly magical city with a touch of normal.

Old-school Fever fans should be extremely happy with this book after the last two in the series. It has that feel about it that seemed to have been missing in Iced and Burned. We get Mac's POV, but we aren't only angsting over Barrons too much. The main focus isn't on their relationship, like in Burned. I would say that the biggest focus in this book is Dani/Jada, and everyone dealing with her grown-up form. And, luckily, we get Dancer back, who does a great job of trying to get the group to see that they've been unfair to Jada, who has lived in hell for the past five years alone only to come back and have everyone hate her hardened form. They didn't consider what she must have been through to become "Jada", just that they were disappointed that she wasn't 14-yr old Dani anymore.

Dancer said: "She wants to be Jada, I'm fine with it. She wants to be Dani, I'm fine with it. Quit looking at it like Jada killed Dani. Figure out how to appreciate both sides of her personality...

Your rejection of Jada stems from how guilty you feel about what happened to her and that's all about your hangups, not hers..."

Although, I wish he wouldn't have helped Ryodan by opening his eyes about this because I'm not on the Dani/Ryo ship in any way. Ryodan is a complete and utter asshole. He's overbearing, rude, and completely unconcerned about the feelings of others. I don't understand in any way how anyone can find anything attractive about his personality.

My reasons for hating Ryodan:

First off, he breaks the rules of the Nine and tells them "tough shit" basically, all while hurting Christian's family. He cannot care less about how his actions in this case are hurting so many others because he wants to play and experiment with turning others into whatever the hell he is. Why? So he can turn Dani/Jada....probably against her will.
But, isn't that sweet and caring? Besides, what about the extent he went to during the fire for her?
NO. It is all still selfishly motivated because he considers Dani his possession. And, "he isn't going to let anything happen to something that belongs to him." (His words)

Later, he purposely doesn't disclose where Kat is when her long-term boyfriend comes to him for help because she's been missing for weeks. He has even been checking the dead every few days to make sure she's not one of them.

Mac: "you need to let him know somehow that she's all right."

"Because it's not fair," he mocked.

"Because there's no need to inflict suffering if you can prevent it."

"He'll brood, he'll pine. She'll return. He'll get over it."

Dick!

I seem to remember when Dani went missing for a very short time and he went ballistic. But, only his feelings matter to him - no one else's.

And, let's not forget what he did during the fire to prove a certain point to Dani..

Plus, his entire treatment of Mac is deplorable. If my husband's friend talked to me like he talks to her? He wouldn't be seeing my husband anymore. Ryodan's a disrespectful asshole to both Barrons and Mac by the way he treats her.

I can list more times when Ryodan is a complete douchebag, but then I would have to quote absolutely every exchange he has with anyone in the book.

So, STFU Ryodan!

The best part of this story was seeing Jada develop and struggle to find herself in a world that stood still while she was out in a battlefield. It was also nice to have Dancer back, and to see Christian's development. There is a cliffhanger that should make the next book really interesting too.

All in all, this is the happiest I've been about a book in this series for a long time. Now, it's just waiting for another year for the next one...

Pre-review: Many fans of the Fever series are screaming: "Please not Mac again, give Dani a chance!", I think it's saying something.

And I know I'm going to lose it if Mac continued to be the main character of this book.

PS: I'm still hopelessly curious about what will happen to Dani, but then I learnt Mac and Barrons (both of whom I hate with a passion) will still be taking up spaces in this book, I now need to think very carefully about whether to continue reading.

Extra: things you need to know about a certain narrator of the audiobooks of this Fever series and how KMM stepped up to...defend a sex offender: link

Then two days later, KMM finally apologized after readers's protest: (link), it looks like an attempt to save the book's sell rate and PR.

Here is Navassa's review, with links to articles covering the Phil Gigante case.

Actual review starts here:

1.5 stars. After suffering through the train-wreck which is Burned, I have to admit Feverborn isn't as bad as I'd imagined. Therefore the extra 0.5 star is given because this book is actually a tiny bit less awful than Burned.

Here're my finding:

(1) The Mac/Barrons scenes in the book are still highly unnecessary (why so many relationship dramas when the whole city is in so much deep shit?) but at least it isn't as bad as those we have in Burned.

(2) At least KMM has the decency to tune down the Mac/Barrons sex scenes in this book, I don't want to hear about Barrons' magical dick and the monkey sex these two are having. It is so damn gross.

(3) I actually hate Mac a bit less than before, still I find the dramas with her annoying as hell.

(4) Jada becomes a total Mary Sue in this book, she is so pretty and is awesome with everything she dose and every guy loves her, that's so gross.

(5) Sadly, the Jada's narration is so damn boring,

(6) Ryodan continues to be a fucking Saint which is totally gross---that is even grosser than his admitting to love the 14 years old Dani, I want the Bastard!Ryo from Iced back so badly! T_T

(7) Christian also becomes so uninteresting...I mean.......at least the PedoBear!Christian used to amuse me to no end...

(8) As an Urban Fantasy novel, the world building in this book is so weak, as a romance, the love stories in it are uninspiring and forced, what a failure.

(9) There really isn't enough plot to keep the story going., and the plot development is stretched so far and in between.

(10) the Lor/Jo chapter arrives as a small mercy for me.

(11) Characters such as the Unseelie King, the concubine and Kat are either nowhere in sight or barely mentioned in the book, I'm disappointed.

Will continue to read this series only when I can get free covers.

Spoilers

Ugh, another disappointing installment. Mac was insufferable, Barrons lost all his appeal, Dani/Jada was a boring Mary Sue, and Ryodan was as much as a paedo as ever. The story line had none of the mystery/intrigue/spark of the original five books, it was generic, and the creepy and contrived relationship between paedo Ryodan and Dani/Jada didn't help matters - that whole tattoo/licking/half naked subplot spoke for itself, what a load of rubbish.

-I was bored with Mac/Barrons, they used to be entertaining but they were tiresome in this, when it came down to it there was nothing between them but sex, Mac at one point even confirmed that was the case. All their chemistry and push and pull, and the adventures they went on was nowhere to be seen, that was what made them fun, now they were nothing but generic sex and dull exchanges. It didn't help that all Mac did was fangirl over how spectacular Barrons was and how his dick was so epic that it was healing and life affirming. It was over the top, as well as shallow.
Mac was nothing but a sex toy to Barrons and it was clear she would never match up to that woman from his past, who was quite obviously the love of his life and he himself said she was his sun, moon and stars. Mac on the other hand was barely a puddle in the ground. I'm hoping Mac gets some character growth or a personality that doesn't revolve around Barrons, but it's unlikely she'll get it in the next book because of the Sinsar Dubh taking over her at the end of this one.

-What does Mac even see in Barrons? The majority of the time he treats her like rubbish, the rest of the time she's just his sex toy.

-Jada was a boring robot, all her proper grammar and cold, dull thoughts made me hate her. I thought I was going to like her once she finally talked about her time in the Silvers, I was expecting something exciting to have happened to her, but that wasn't the case. Of all the crazy and character building things she could have gotten up to, becoming BFF's with a depressed weird cat/koala bear called Shazam was probably the worst idea ever, I would have even preferred a secret baby or joining a cult better than that crap. There was so much potential for Jada/Dani's time there, but all she did was fight faceless bad guys and hang out with Shazam, I don't call that growing up or remotely interesting.

-Why the hell was Dani whining and bitching about no-one being pleased to see her and welcoming her back with open arms after her time in the Silvers? Was she serious? When she came back from the Silvers all she wanted to do was murder Mac and the Nine and only cared about power and death. All this new bullshit about her being hurt by their reaction/rejection was nonsensical when she was gunning for everyone's lives. What a dumb rewrite all so KMM could write herself out of the corner she put Dani/Jada and co in.

-Ryodan was a creep and paedo, he actually told Jada that he loved her as a 14 year old (probably because she was more innocent and easier to manipulate/control). And no, I don't believe he loved her in a platonic way, what with all the jealous cockblocking of Dancer and the innuendos that were thrown at her or the fact that as soon as Dani was a couple of years older he was instantly even more randier and hot for her. The Ryo/Dani relationship will never be anything other than wrong, he groomed her and abused her when she was fourteen, and him acting like a hero later doesn't change that. Also, she's still only fucking 19, whilst he's thousands of years old, but does he give her room to grow up and actually experience life and love? Nope, all he did was act like he owned her and was constantly in her face. He should leave her the fuck alone and let her be her own person, instead of pushing himself on her and trying to invade her life in various ways. It's also disturbing how he'll no doubt get to pop her cherry when he's been abusing her from a young age, not to mention the fact that he's thousands of years older than her and literally been with millions women. Revolting. At least Mac was never groomed by Barrons and she met Barrons when she was an adult woman instead of a 14 year old girl. Ugh, ugh, ugh.

-Where were Kat and Kasteo and even Lor/Jo? I would have rather read about them than boring Mac/Barrons and nauseating peado Ryo/Dani.

-What was with Alina? I actually liked her turning up because it was the only thing that kept me guessing. Was she real? Was she an illusion? Did Mac unintentionally raise her from the dead? It did seem like Alina was only added to try to recapture some of the charm of the original series, but I didn't mind that at all as it was the only intriguing thing going on. It was better than the black holes, free Cruce and the Sweeper stuff going on.

-What was with Dageus being one of the Nine/Ten? Really?! What rubbish. The Nine should have stayed the Nine, I'm sure it was more or less established they couldn't just make more of their kind, now the rules have been twisted for this latest boring sub plot.

-Also, the whole Ryodan being the boss now still doesn't sit right with me. Barrons has gone from clearly being the alpha with Ryodan being his right hand man to Barrons being Ryodan's bitch. Not to mention Ryodan has suddenly become more smarter and observant, whilst Barrons has become dumb. It's clear Ryodan's KMM's darling, that's why she's made him the ultimate alpha and is 'rewarding' him with pure virginal Mary Sue Jada/Dani as a HEA, not to mention making Barrons a shadow of his former self so that Ryodan can shine or some rubbish. Well, it's not worked with me, Ryodan is the worst. Ugh, if she wanted to write about Ryodan so much she could have done that without pissing all over other characters - she's ruined Mac, Barrons, and Dani just to engineer Ryodan as the hero of the series.

-Even though I was yet again disappointed by KMM's latest installment, I'll still end up reading the next one in the hope that Mac/Barrons will become fun again, and to find out what happens with Alina, Jo/Lor, Kat/Kasteo and what havoc possessed Mac causes.

Well, crap, a freaking cliffhanger!!!

Beware: Spoilers if you haven’t read the previous books in the series.

I was trying to think about what actually happened in this installment, and I finally came to this conclusion: Feverborn was more a about mending relationships, and character evolvement than plot progression. That’s fine, because the characters and relationships are the most important part to me. I do wish more happened to forward the overall story, though. Basically there was talk about mending the black holes before they destroy the earth, and yes, solutions were being searched, plans made, but not much else on that front. There was the ever present conundrum of Mac and the constant will-she-or-won’t-she go psycho if the Book gets unlocked. Mac constantly mulls this back and forth, and I have to say I’m getting tired of the whole issue. It was almost a Not that I’m happy about it, but now at least we can move on to a solution!

And what is this with Alina? I just know that the Alina plotline takes away from other I’d rather have more time, like Ryodan and Jada/Dani, and Jo and Lor. It just gives more page time to Mac and her constant internal monologues which I’m completely over. Really, Mac and Barrons had their story, and I loved it, but I thought we left them in a great place in Shadowfever, and I’d be happy to have them more as secondary characters now. I was happy to see Mac and Jada working through what happened, and

I feel like everyone is finally accepting Jada for the woman she’s become, and in that acceptance, she’s finally thawing a bit, and will As for Jada and Ryodan, I revel in every interaction, picking it apart, and capturing every nuance! I’m loving the direction things are headed, and Their relationship is magnetic and intense, and I feel the same zing I felt watching Barrons and Mac fall for each other!

In addition to more Jada and Ryodan, I want more Jo and Lor. Their story is hot, and had me cracking up. I thought Lor was just a simple man (or whatever one of the Nine is) obsessed only with blonds and boobs, but we’re getting more layers, possibly because Jo’s bringing out his more complex side, but I’m loving their story.
I don’t think Sean O’Bannion stands much of a chance. As Mac said:

Staying in close quarters with one of the Nine, alone for a long period of time, was pretty much the worst thing a woman in a monogamous relationship could do.

I got the feeling Kat and Sean were already on the rocks in Burned.

Be warned there is a massive cliffhanger at the end. Hopefully we won’t have to wait the usual year and half to two years for Feversong.

As for the narration, I found out just a few days before it was released that the narrators were not Phil Gigante and Natalie Ross. No information was up on Audible until a few days prior to the release, and I was shocked. Most readers, myself included, LOVED their performances in the past installments. I’ve enjoyed Luke Daniels performances in other series’. He seriously makes The Iron Druid Chronicles amazing for me! I can’t imagine any other narrator. I think most took issue with his take on Ryodan and Barrons, but I grew more and more used to it, and liked it by the end. I did love Luke’s performance of Christian, and Lor. I had major issues with Jill Redfield’s performance of Mac. Mac can be annoying with her long internal monologues, especially when she’s reminiscing on things I could completely care less about, like all her shades of pink nail polish. DO NOT FLIPPING CARE!!! So having Ms. Redfield narrate in what I can only describe as a snotty Southern accent did not help at all. She made Mac even more annoying. I have a feeling I would’ve enjoyed Mac a lot more if I didn’t listen to the audio version. However, I really enjoyed her take on Jada. Still, I’d prefer Natalie Ross overall.

Feverborn is the eighth installment in Karen Marie Moning's adult, urban-fantasy series titled: Fever. I have consistently said this series is my favorite of all time and I've meant it every time I've said it. But... I'm so sad to share my personal viewpoint that the series is on a descent from its glorious peak.

My thoughts: I personally loved the sixth installment: Iced, but so many readers were very vocal with brutal disapproving thoughts and I get it. I definitely understood the source of the controversy. Regardless, Ms. Moning should have stayed with her vision for the series. This is a lesson that you can't please everyone. Because she is trying to right the perceived wrong instead of following her vision for these characters, she is losing the magic in my opinion. I definitely like some of the storylines she has gone with (the whole "Jada" think is pretty interesting), but it's not all-consuming anymore, at least not for me. It's three stars instead of five. It's breaking my heart.

The positive I can note is that fans will likely enjoy the more thorough story integration of Mac and Dani/Jada. Being a fan of Dani from Iced and being very curious about this current kickass Jada, I am pleased. Overall, I liked Feverborn. Jada had a lot to do with that though. Her and Ryodan, her and Shazam, her and Dancer, her without Shazam...at this point, just give me Jada!

I am certain I am not capable of disliking any book in this series. But like I said the magic is gone and again we have a book with tons of wasted pages recapping events that readers have (or should have!) already read. If you are a fan of this series, I encourage you to read both positive and negative reviews to decide if you will move forward. Personally, I kinda wish I had stopped when I still had my reader's high. I didn't though so I will faithfully continue reading, hoping with everything that these characters will climb out of their fictional pages and back into my heart.

My favorite quote:
“Breath was everything. When nothing else could be done: one could breathe and shape and infuse that breath with strength and purpose.”

I don't even know what to say about this book. I don't think I've felt this overwhelmed since Shadowfever! There's just so much information and so many things going on. You definitely have to be current with the reading to even have a clue about who's who and what's been happening!

So mainly, I'll just review the characters and fill in a little bit of what's going on without being too confusing...

Mac...she's going through some things as always but at least there is some progression and she's back to the ol' Mac thank goodness. However, she's still trying to figure things out and her place in this world.

description

Barrons...oh my goodness, he was back to his super sexy growly self. I just couldn't get enough. I love how overprotective he was of Mac and how he is still always there for her emotionally and definitely sexually. Phewww! I also liked the little glimpses we got of the relationship between him and Ryodan.

Jada/Dani...finally we get to see some sparks of Dani in that tough exterior. I liked how she was opening up a bit. I was hoping for a bit more romance...and at this point, I don't even care who! Both Dancer and Ryodan are yummy. And don't even get me started on Shazam...that was heart wrenching!

description

Ryodan...well, I was really expecting more from him but maybe that's the point. Now that he has a grown up Dani, is he flustered? Say it isn't so...I needed more! And there's gotta be more to that tattoo!

Dancer...I was glad that he wasn't a total loner and again, I was thinking there would be more especially with all the changes he made!

Christian...I like that he could tell and I knew that he would find out. Again, I just wanted to read more about them.
(Yes, I have to be vague!!)

Lor...Wow, I was surprised at how much Lor-time we got! And the interesting spin with him and Jo. Can't wait to see where this goes.

Blast from the Past...well, I didn't see this coming. You want it to be real but it has a real Pet's Sematary vibe to it.

Cruce...everything was as expected and the Roach God? LOL...well, it made things interesting.

The Big Battle...was a bit of a letdown and I felt like "not again"!

That feckin' ending, Dude! WTH?? I sooo effin' LOVED it...HARD. I've been waiting for this forever! OMG...."Got you, sweet thing" had shivers running down my back especially hearing it in the voice of Hannibal Lecter! (well, that's what I imagine it sounding like!)

Cannot wait for the next book, Feversong, and hey, we only have to wait a year for it (January 2017)! ;)

And don't forget to check out the 'People, Places, Etc', glossary that she included once again. Really helps if you've forgotten who someone is or what happened.

Favorite quote:

♥ “Bloody talk about bloody orgasms with your own bloody woman not mine,” Barrons said tightly. “You don’t know a thing about her orgasms and never will.”

Hoping for the Barrons and Mac I fell in love with in the Fever Series. Don't care about Dani/Jada and Ryo

Edited to add: I really liked this book. It was a throwback to Shadowfever. Mac is back to herself, Barron's is showing emotional progress. Jada is, well, I still couldn't care less. The book ends on a big cliffy, and I don't think I can wait another year for the next installment!

A release party at the MacHalo Freaks buddy reading with the faithful:):):)

The faithful readers of the Fever Series approached this book with a lot of excitement and quite a bit of reluctance, many feeling let-down by events taking place in Iced and Burned... For all of those, this book was a set-up book for the last two of the series and as such, many seeds were planted and not so many things were resolved. However, it was not as jarring as Burned and not as radically different as Iced... The characters we loved or hated returned to acting like themselves once more, and the feeling of disorientation the last book installed in the reader was overcome by KMM giving background and explanations for some of the changes, that we were left to deal with on our own... So guys, take a deep breath, exhale and know - it is not a disaster!!!!

Feverborn redeemed Jada for me. Just by giving us some insights into her experiences, thoughts and feelings, Jada became the grown-up through adversity Dani we all hoped her to be one day. I think many readers would have reacted differently if we had this type of understanding in the book we first met Jada and a lot of the backlash would not have been there. So many of us felt we had LOST Dani, that wonderful ray of sunshine, as annoying as she could be at times, and we were not even given the time to grieve for her - it felt like Jada was being crammed down our throats with barely any explanation and we were supposed to just take her as she came and deal with it... This books' best moments were the glimpses we got into the workings of her brain, reviling the scars on her body and of her soul, beginning to understand what made her the way she is now... And it is heartbreaking, giving KMM credit for doing it in an unobtrusive way and with not much moping or bitching about it... This is so Jada, and I loved it!

I also loved Mac being Mac. This means, of coarse, that she is obnoxious at times, monologues to death, is still quite obsessed with sex and Barrons, struggles with The Book being in her head and tries to outsmart it at all times, and still manages to be kick-ass and wonderful. I loved Mac!

Ryo and the 9, as well as the rest of the secondary characters did not get to experience any growth in this volume. KMM is still trying to make Ryo into a great guy and I am still not buying it. Yes, he does seem very thoughtful when it comes to Dani/Jada, but he is still a macho tyrant who wants everything his way or the highway, is still an ass, and apart from being long-lived and hot I see no other redeeming qualities in him. I also dislike that KMM is trying to eclipse Barrons' importance in their group by making Ryo "The King"... Not working for me...

Dancer is wonderful and I resent him being put in the "nice young guy liked by all" group, thus taking away all hope of him being a romantic interest for the tough ladies we have as leads in this series. Don't insult us by setting him up for some Merry Sue to be swept under the "never heard of him again" rug... Not cool...!

Lor is still funny as hell and whatever they are getting into with Jo is quite hilarious. Looking at it as a comic relief makes it totally plausible, instead of angsty and bothersome... Good way to go!

Christian"s story line is on a better track as well, but I hate where things are going with his uncle, although I get it would be used as plot advancement somewhere in the future... Cruce is once again plotting and creating bad situations for all and toward the 80% mark things began happening, mayhem ensued and the most devastating discovery, which gave us the biggest insight into the debt of Jada's emotional conflict, came out of this calamity at the Abby...

The last 5% achieved what was my deepest wish when starting this book - KMM fixed it, in her horribly cliffhanging way, but it rocked my soul and made me truly feel again for this characters... The broken heart and the unfixable brain, they had a true moment of forgiveness and understanding, giving me hope for the next two books.

Through the book there were some lulls, followed by some action, and the plot was very watered down. There were the black holes which threaten the worlds' existence, but we barely ever concentrate on dealing with them... Even The King says that our world's fundamental tapestry has been irrevocably damaged, and we still barely look at the real problem??? I understand setting up plot lines for the next book, but if you are going to make a threat this big, shouldn't it require the appropriate attention?

To wrap it up, the plot was very thin, but the characters finally started acting like themselves again! The end of the book is very strong and it will be interesting to see what happens next!!! It should be Epic! I fell back in love with Mac and Dani, and Barrons still rules! (F#*c-off Ryo!) Lets hope the last two books of this passion provoking series lives up to its own history!!!

Do not shy away from reading this book, give it a chance - who knows, you might find your way back to your favorite characters! Now I wish all many good books and much reading!

I went into this expecting to fully enjoy watching the train-wreck continue (and still kind of hoping that it got better), but what I didn't expect was for the train-wreck to roll over into real-life.

An apology and admission of wrong-doing have been issued, but it might just have been a day too late. When I first read the story and the comments, it sort of became a last-straw situation, one that I rested on top of many other disturbing comments that I didn't like and left me with a bad taste in my mouth.

Sometimes I wish I was better able to separate real-life from the 'art,' but I can't, so I won't.

Also, I'm of the firm belief that the accessibility we now enjoy with authors (and other artists) might sometimes be a bit too much.

Edit 01/02/2016.

I listened to the audiobook and enjoyed it. But overall, my original review and rating for the e-book stand. I wanted more action and less introspection. To explore characters the Barrons' way - by what they do, not what they say.

Feverborn is all over the place, a load of people, milling about, discussing their relationships. Who am I? What am I? Who are you? What are you? Most importantly there is NO PLOT. And how many recaps do we need about what happened in the previous books!

The great thing about Iced was that it went in a different direction to the previous Fever books. It was primarily about solving a mystery - why were things getting iced. I had hoped we would get more of that, and less existential angst.

The core mystery, following on from the destruction of the HFK, was ignored in favour of monologues, which didn't drive the story forward. Moning missed a trick in the Christian/Jada moments, as they both spent years in the Silvers, and came back fundamentally changed. This would have been a good opportunity to explore Jada's time Silverside.

It was also annoying how Mac still treats Dani/Jada as a kid, it was patronising - Jada is a grown woman, now close to Mac in age. Mac may feel her experiences are parallel to Jada's, but in reality they could not be more different. Whereas Mac had a charmed, privileged life before going to Dublin, Dani had a terrible upbringing, neglected by her mother, controlled and treated by Rowena as her personal assassin, friendless and lonely. Mac has experienced a year of both good and bad experiences. I am not diminishing the fact of Mac's rape, but Dani/Jada spent 5 and half years in hell. Dani/Jada knows who she is. Mac is in constant turmoil. Jada came back a leader, Mac stands on the sidelines, only involving herself when it suits her. One thing I have never understood is how Mac became good at fighting. She never trains, yet she manages to kill Fae? Dani/Jada has trained for years.

I did love Lor's commentary though. More Lor less Mac. Also, Dancer's interactions with Jada where revealing (I have a theory about who Dancer is later in the review).

I also got a little creeped out by the Ryodan Dani/Jada thing (I hate the name Jada). I understand why we have the Jada/Dani dichotomy. But by keeping Dani as a separate entity, at least as far as Ryodan is concerned, the whole idea of them having sex is beginning to freak me out, a 14 year old in a woman's body - ewwww.

I continue to struggle with low self esteem Mac. I thought she had sorted that out, in the whole:
“Who am I?”.
“Jericho.”
“Who are you?” ...
“Whogivesafuck?”
moment in Shadowfever.

And I totally agree with the other comments about Mac's obsession with Baron's penis, and the tone of the sex scenes. Yes, she likes f**ckin with Barron's. Yes, she likes f**ckin with Barron's beast form (thankfully not the animal - so far). Yes, She likes her F**kin to be kinky (anal sex reference anyone?). Whogivesafuck?

And the Mac/Jericho v. Ms Lane/Barrons thing - Ahhhh. You've told us about a 1000 times now why and when Barrons calls you Ms Lane or Mac. Why are we back to the whole 'Why is he calling me Ms Lane after we have sex?' You know why. We know why. Why are you bothered about this AGAIN?

It is a small thing, but I didn't like how Mac was really rude to the Hunter, he was doing her a favour, and she just ordered him around, without a please or a thank you. It irritated me.

Listening to the audiobook did make me allow me to expand my theory of who Dancer is, Cross referenced with the Immortal Highlander and Highlander's Touch, and also to develop some questions, observations, and ideas - some are linked to the Highlander Books, including who the Nine might be.

Who is Dancer?
Dancer is the the quarter Fae son of Circenn and Lisa Brodie, the grandson of Adam Black. Adam is known as the Sin Siriche Du or Blackest Fairy, trusted, puckish, beloved advisor to Queen Aoibheal.
Why?
- We know Lisa is a doctor like Dancer's Mum.
- We know Circenn and Lisa Brodie travel (sift) in time, and Dancer's parents travel a lot.
- Circenn has visions, and says his son will be very special.
The above facts are in The Highlanders Touch.
- He has blue fae-brushed eyes.
- Dancer seems older in Feverborn. Time Travel! He could have gone somewhere else for a few years and come back the same day he left if he wanted.
- He also hates time - poem to Dani.
- He can make connections other people can't. This is called Far Vision and is a product of being able to sift time and dimensions.
- The Brodie family have spent time in Faery - so Dancer would be less intimated by immortals.
- Also, has anyone ever seen Fae around Dancer, other than at Chesters? (Other than Christian). I can't recall, and I could be wrong on that one.
- This one is a litte far fetched, but as Adam Black is potentially Dancer's grandfather, and we never found out how Adam got to Ireland to identify Aoibheal, could Dancer have sifted him in?
- If I am correct, Dancer may be Immortal, as Lisa was given the Queen's elixir when pregnant.
- If he is a quarter fae, who knows what other powers he has? Plus, there is a spare royal prince slot going, as Adam Black is now human. Could Dancer be (or already be) the next Seelie Prince of the House of D'Jai?
- Jada, when at Trinity, implies that Dancer has a certain charisma/aura about him that attracts people - glamour? Or something similar?
- He only ever says his parents are gone. Gone where?

Questions, Observations and Ideas
1. Mac hears music from the fae - Song of Making?
2. Adam Black gave Daegus his immortal fae life energy to bring him back to life in a Highlander book. Will this be referred to? And what impact will it have on his turning?
3. Immortal Highlander - Adam Black has a very special little girl who Aoibheal visits. Future Seelie Queen, filling the gap left?
4. After reading Lor's reaction to the idea of turning Dani - If one of the Nine is a woman, could turning her be the reason Kasteo has not spoken in a 1000 years?
5. After BB&B was trashed, Barrons seemed to channel a Kristen Ashley hero. Love KA, but it was a bit weird.
6. Lovin references in forums to Book controlled Mac as MacBook. So hoping we go back to a Black Mac. After all you can't eviscerate essential self i.e. the book is her and she is the book. Light and Dark, Good and Evil.
7. Shazham, real or imagined, Jada can't be a super hero without a sidekick.
8. I wonder if Jo digitised the Sidhe Seer libraries at the abbey, or if it is all in her head? They are going to need her knowledge in the future.
9. I am wondering if Jada was really there at the end with the Sweeper, because it was like she had a personality transplant.
10. Music box is one of the Hallows
11. Didn't the The Book want a mate? That would be Mac and Cruce. Not into that at all - as he raped her. However, Mac's book has got a mate in Barrons, so hopefully not.
12. Barrons' middle name is Zigor (means the punished or the punisher)- which is Basque. Could the Nine be monsters from Basque Mythology. The Aatxe live in caves (the Nine seem to live below ground), are shapeshifters, and punish people in the name of the Goddess Mari. This places the Nine in a pantheon, and the myth has it origins in the Paleolithic.

I also read that: The latest research into Irish DNA has confirmed that the early inhabitants of Ireland were not directly descended from the Keltoi of central Europe. In fact the closest genetic relatives of the Irish in Europe are to be found in the north of Spain in the region known as the Basque Country. These same ancestors are shared to an extent with the people of Britain - especially the Scottish. http://www.sott.net/article/263587-DN...

Original Review 20/01/2016 (Kindle Book)

Sorry Moning Fever Fans, it is a DNF from me. About a quarter of the way through I just skipped to the end to see if I could be bothered reading further. It wasn't, so I just skimmed and scanned the rest of the book, just in case something caught my imagination and created a desire to read on. None of it did.

Why?
The book is a complete mess. Most importantly there was NO PLOT. It was just a load of people, milling about, discussing their relationships. And how many recaps do we need about what happened in the previous books! The great thing about Iced was that it went in a different direction to the previous Fever books. It was primarily about solving a mystery - why were things getting iced. I had hoped we would get more of that, and less existential angst. But no. Both Burned and Feverborn have been a massive let down for me. Part of it is missing Dani, who I adored, and often brought some badly needed comic relief. Part of it is hating Mac - I have just had enough of her whining, and I am even starting to hate Barrons for indulging her petty, shallow, ridiculous ways.

On another note
Some Moning fans seem to get very upset when readers criticise Moning's work. I would just like to say, the whole point of a review is to deliver criticism, and criticism is defined as the analysis and judgement of the merits and faults of a literary or artistic work. I have not found any merits in Feverborn yet. Perhaps with time, and when I feel less disappointed, I may find things I like in the book (see edits 01/02/2016). In the meantime, I am entitled to record my current analysis and judgement of Feverborn.

OH. MY. GOD.

I'm losing my mind. What an ending! That cliffy! Oh, come on, come on, come on!

………….

Alright, the moment I finished this book, a lot of feelings flooded over me and so many thoughts popped into my head all at once. And honestly, I don’t know where to start with this review. Let’s just say it wasn’t exactly what I’d expected, or what I’d hoped it to be. The story started off slow. The first half of the book bored me to tears that I almost gave up several times, but thankfully, everything picked up in the second half. It was just like I was reading another book and I found myself couldn’t stop turning the pages!

In this book, there was way too much of what the characters were feeling or thinking, too much inner monologue (mostly Mac’s), and too many viewpoints. Even Aoibheal and Roach God had their own point of view! WTH! It seemed a bit aimless to me. Was it necessary to have almost every character’s POV here?

And about the characters, I've still hated Ryodan. I've still never forgotten what he had done to Dani in Iced. Even though he tried to protect Jada from the fire, it was too little too late. Sorry man, you’re such a douche!

Dani/Jada, I’d never liked her. She’d annoyed the hell out of me ever since she first appeared in Fever series. I hated that she’d kept running away from Mac, acting like a coward. But in this book, Jada could eventually redeem herself in the last chapter when she accepted her mistakes and opened her heart to Mac. I had been waiting for this moment for a very long time!

The two best things in this book were Mac and Barrons.
Mac hadn’t been my favorite character in this series, yet I’d never found myself loathing her. She could get on my nerves sometimes, but for the most part, she’d impressed me with her bravery and her wit. Who would have thought that when I finished the story, she would turn out to be one of my favorite heroines?! …Mac has a very beautiful heart…

And Barrons… No need to say much about him. Barrons is Barrons—hot, sexy, brooding, with possessive and protective streak as always. *Sigh*
For the readers who love him like I do, here are some quotes that will melt your heart.

I swiveled my head to look at him. I’d been “Mac” mere minutes ago. “Why do you do that?”
His eyes said, Do you really want to call me Jericho?
I thought about it a minute and was rather startled to realize I didn’t. Jericho was…intimate. Jericho and Mac were a completely different entity than Ms. Lane and Barrons. They existed in a different place. A freer environ, a sacred one. And I like that difference. I nodded, smiling faintly. His dark eyes gleamed with something appreciative, and I practically preened.
You continue to evolve, his eyes said. Keep fucking me instead of worrying.

Aww… *Swoon*

“You’re too tense,” Ryodan growled. “For fuck’s sake, you don’t stalk an orgasm, you enjoy its arrival.”
“Bloody talk about bloody orgasms with your own bloody woman not mine,” Barrons said tightly. “You don’t know a thing about her orgasms and never will.”
Ryodan shot him a dark look. “It was a metaphor.”
“I never stalk an orgasm. I don’t have to with Barrons,” I said.
“Too the fuck much information, Mac,” Ryodan said.
“You’re the one who brought up orgasms.”
“And he never will again,” Barrons said pointedly.

Barrons never lets anyone bad-talk Mac. I love him!

“Why are you still talking?”
“Because my dick isn’t in your mouth.”
“That can be remedied.” I was over the love seat and on him, taking him down hard to the floor beneath me, and he was falling back, laughing and oh, God, I love that sound!

Oh yes, he was laughing!

“You still could have gone without me.”
“I bloody fucking know that.” He cut me a seething glance.
“Then why didn’t you?”
“Because, Ms. Lane, when the world goes bloody hell, I will always be at your bloody side.”

I’m flying…..

By the way, there are too many puzzles from the previous books and this one that still haven't been solved, dozens of questions that haven’t been answered. And with that ending… I can hardly wait for the next book!
