"Mark Linkous' music explored the part of human nature we like to pretend doesn't exist: the death drive. Or, more accurately, his music conveyed the conflicts that arise within us as a result of having both a will to live and will to self-destruct.
He showed us this through anger, confused as to whether it should be directed inward or outward ("I wanna be a stupid and shallow mutherfucker now, I wanna be a tough skinned bitch but I don't know how"); through his detached view of violence ("Bloody lake angels who's humid smoke haunt the dawn woods, all hot and stormy birds blood"); through the cyclical nature of self-destruction ("Buildings are rooks, nature's a vice, rattle of diesels, snakes eating their own tails"); and through the inevitability of death ("What once grew straight and tall t’ward the sun, is absorbing back down to dirt like a sponge)
What made his music special is that instead of just dwelling on these negative emotions, his instrumentation expressed that there is beauty in them. And not a beauty that we should feel ashamed to recognize. I think this why so many people who have been grieving or emotionally confused have found solace and motivation in Mark's music. Rest in peace, Mark, as your music continues to help me through my own struggles."
