This is the one where…
…they do a three-disc concert, where the first disc is an acoustic set played during the day before even the “opening” band played.

…they conclude their attempt at playing all of their songs from the tour in their three shows in Boston.

…Vedder insults Georgians…twice.

…Sleater-Kinney guests on “Fortunate Son” and it rawks.

Setlist
All right, you’ve waited long enough. And I have, too. Despite banter allusions to the contrary, the band did not play all of the songs they’ve played on the tour without repeating. I didn’t check all the shows on the tour to come up with a comprehensive list, but I went through all their studio songs and found that in these three shows they didn’t play “Glorified G” or “Last Exit,” both of which received over a dozen performances on the tour. They also didn’t get to “Satan’s Bed,” but that was only played once. All of the covers I came up with off the top of my head were played. More impressive, though, was the lack of repeats. “Even Flow” has only been not played on I think three shows through the tour, and two of them were two of these Boston shows. Only “Yellow Ledbetter” was played twice in the four sets, and that second play came as the third encore of this night’s second set.

In addition to giving mad props here to The Sky I Scrape, without whose excellent database search functionality I wouldn’t have been able to write the above paragraph, I have to recognize, first of all, Pearl Jam’s extensive collection of quality songs and, even more so, their ability to keep virtually the entire catalog fresh. I found that with the exception of a few songs you could count off on one hand, if one of their dozen or so songs didn’t get played on this tour, it’s been played on their current one. Not only are these guys awfully good songwriters, their ability to play virtually their entire catalog is almost certainly without precedent in rock and roll. Once again, the band is excellent at rewarding their hardcore fans. Now if they would only learn which songs should be played over and over and which ones shouldn’t. If I never heard “Do The Evolution” and “Better Man” again, I wouldn’t mind.

There were loads of rarities, as you might imagine. Besides “All Those Yesterdays,” which was played for the first time on the tour, the super rare ones were “Sometimes” (fourth time overall, second time on this leg), “Drifting,” (2, 1), “Parting Ways” (3, 2), “Tremor Christ” (2, 1), “Why Go” (2, 2), “Mankind” (2, 1), and “U” (3, 1), in its first appearance on the tour outside of Japan (shows #11-15). There’s also a track listed as “One Note.” After Vedder announces they only have one song they haven’t played, Cameron counts off four beats on his drumsticks and everybody plays one loud, short note.

Banter
On a three disc show, you get a lot of banter. A lot of it was referencing the three shows, playing all the songs, and the uniqueness of the acoustic set to start off the day. There was also a long speech about how awesome Howard Zinn is, how we should support the troops, and how the government is in bed with corporations. Stone Gossard got in on the banter act as well, saying he’s been asking for the mic all tour right before he sang “Mankind.”

Things got weird, though, during the “Why Can’t I Touch It?” by Buzzcocks tag onto “Wishlist” when Vedder implored the crowd to sing along. “Sing with me, will ya? It’s not an easy part. We didn’t give them this part to sing in Atlanta, I’ll tell ya that,” he implored mid-song. Then, right before they went into the Leatherman/Nothingman/Better Man trio of songs, he said, “We got three songs here for you that all go together…just like teeth in a Georgian’s mouth,” which…you know…I don’t even get the reference, but it must have been a bad one because he followed up by apologizing to Atlanta.

You know, if you took every state and combined its’ citizens into just one person, I’d have a lot less in common with the Georgia person than I would with many other states. However, is it really fair to paint with that broad of a brush? And is it a good idea to do that to fans of your band? I’d be largely okay with Vedder blatantly admitting he doesn’t respect a subset of his fan base based on geographic location, but he also wants to beat them over the head with insults to turn them to his point of view. Later he lauds the Bostonians for their politics, compares the region to San Francisco and Seattle (two very different shades of blue, Eddie), and says “if we can just get the middle involved, everything will be all right.” Gee, Eddie, I wonder why they might not see things your way, considering your complete lack of respect for them? Hmmm.

Lastly, we learn right before the second encore, that they’re going over their time limit and are making the neighbors of the outdoor venue unhappy and that they probably wouldn’t be allowed to play there again.

Song Changes
There were tons of song changes in this show. Litereally. If you weighed them, they would weigh well over 4000 pounds, giving us more than two tons. Hence, tons.

One of the “to blame you” or “it was you” lines in “Footsteps” changes to “And if there’s questions I need from you/Allow me to continue to ask you.” Later, “Let me continue to blame you” becomes “…bless you.”

Vedder changes “Wishlist”’s first line to “I wish I was a neutron bomb/I wouldn’t let myself go off.” He also wishes he was the souvenir “I got in Boston,” instead of the one “you kept your house key on,” though they may be the same one. This tune also gets tagged with “Why Can’t I Touch It?” by Buzzcocks.

“Untitled” seems to get changed as frequently as “Yellow Ledbetter.” For this show, “I got some gas/let’s get out of here/get out of here fast” turns into “got a full tank of gas/let’s go to the ocean whence/where everyone wins.” Also, “I could be there in ten minutes or so/I got my things” becomes “I coulda been there right in 15 minutes ago/You don’t have to pack your things.”

Speaking of “Yellow Ledbetter,” let’s get my best attempts at that out of the way, shall we? “On the seethin’, on the wayside letter sat/Don’t have to ever feel this way again/On the wayside on the front side letter said/I don’t have to ever play this outdoor place again/On a feel ‘em I’d like to wish it on away/And I crawled and I phoned and he could’ve left a message/But he never said/Friend that I/Igive him when I go to bed/And he’s comin’ home in a box or the bag/chorus/And I see you and I wish it’d all stay/And I tried and I phoned and I coulda wrote a memo/But I’m bad that way/And I hope to see you all again/I said I said [something] box or the bag/chorus”

Finally, it’s not really a change, but Sleater-Kinney came out during the encore to play CCR’s “Fortunate Son” with the band, and man did it rawk. Rawked! There’s an urgency and intensity that Carrie Kinney adds to these lyrics that has me reaching to crank up the volume knob every time.

Solos
The only song where the solo changed notably from that on record was “Yellow Ledbetter,” and even its changes, as usual, were minor: just a few small changes at the end that didn’t reach too far and fit in well melodically with the whole of the song. It’s rare I have so few solos to recap, but it’s rare that they don’t play “Even Flow,” too.

Sound
It was fine but not outstanding. The “acoustic” set sounded very thin and hollow. It’s understandable, considering their sound guys probably had to whip that up on the spot as something they weren’t used to.

A three disc phenomenon.Towards the end of the Riot Act tour in Mansfield Massachussetts and the crowds lust for more just extends what was an already large tracklisting.
The setlist sees many favourite songs being played like''Jeremy'',Black''and''Betterman''but also sees songs like''Mankind''getting played which is refreshing.
As Eddie Vedder says himself ''Thank you Boston''and that is exactly what you are thinking at the end of it all as this live cd is truly amazing and a great gift from the people of Boston and Pearl Jam.

This is quite a nice live cd for Pearl Jam fans. Its a 3 cd set, which is nice, that they ended up releasing to stores for a cheap price. The first cd is a nice 12 song set of all acoustic numbers, including some rarer live tracks including "Footsteps", "Driftin", "All Those Yesterdays", and "Thin Air". The price would be worth it just for this first cd alone. Then the regular set is a nice full set of rarer played songs, such as "Brain of J", "Spin the Black Circle", "Tremor Christ", "Down", "Mankind", "U" and others. They are playig really well on this night as well. Not as solid a performance as some nights, but they are still playing in top form, and challenging themselves with a lot of underplayed songs.

If you are new to Pearl Jam, or only a casual fan who knows their "hits" I would reccomend more the MSG shows in New York. But if you are a dedicated fan who wants a great show packed with rare songs, this set is essential.

I dunno, Pearl Jam's songs don't sound so good on Disc 1's twangy acoustic guitars and there's far too much congratulatory applause when they begin a song.

And man, if I had Carrie Brownstein's vocals handy, I would have done "Gimme Shelter" over "Fortunate Son." An equally topical song for the times.
