Editorial Reviews
Four CD set. For over 50 years, singer-songwriter and musician Iain Matthews has carved his own niche, fusing his own mix of well-crafted songs drawing on folk-rock, Americana, soft rock and other influences. Orphans And Outcasts reviews three volumes of his long-deleted rarities series, adding a newly-curated fourth CD of previously unissued rarities from more recent times, bringing the project right up-to-date. The box set covers Iain's entire career, from mid-60s rarities with Pyramid and recordings from around the time of his breakthrough with Matthews Southern Comfort to a handful of rarities by folk-rock favourites Plainsong and a plethora of solo material. Compiled and annotated by Iain himself, Orphans And Outcasts is a very personal trawl through the back pages of a remarkable musical biography. Discs 1-3 have now been remastered; and everything on Disc 4 is previously unissued. Orphans And Outcasts also boasts a multitude of impressive musicians who have worked with Iain down the years, including Richard Thompson, Andy Roberts, Viv Stanshall, Mark 'Griff' Griffiths, Pat Donaldson, Gerry Conway, Ian Whiteman, Jerry Donahue, Timmi Donald, David Surkamp, Mark Hallman and many others. Introductory essay by renowned rock biographer and historian Clinton Heylin.

Disc One: " The Egg Cracked "
This first edition of the " Orphan & Outcasts " was released by the magazine (mail order only) Dirty Linen that carried all the good news of the day concerning Iain Matthews and bands such as Fairport Convention. Twenty tunes can be found on this first disc, and it covers the years 1970-1979 in very fine fashion. Great music later to turn up on solo records and in Matthews Southern Comfort and Plainsong can be found here in their early versions and it sounds like: "Glory on a Stick" as the wise man used to say way back in the day. Disc one has a stunner featured at track 20. That last track is entitled: "New Shirt" and it is one of Iain's finest compositions. A must listen this one is.
Disc Two: " Feet On The Ground "
Another disc from Dirty Linen, this set covers the years from 1981-1983 and Iain's Seattle years are documented in songs featured early on this volume and by the closing song we are safely tucked away in the Texas hill country. The beast is awakened and the master songwriter is really hitting his stride and going for the roses on every track. Disc two is alive and running.
Disc Three: " Top Decade Displayed "
In the nineties Iain Matthews reached the top of the summit in the perfection of his work and (for me) he has remained up there to this very day in 2019. Mature tunes from a man that had already walked a few streets in his time and he keeps growing and getting even better with every passing day. I just gave this third O & O another listen just the other day and it (still) knocks me flat (I must be a fan!) "Woodstock" in a modern remix can be located right here. A single from a band known as Pyramid entitled: "Me about You" features the very first lead vocal by the young Mister Matthews in 1966. A career of music is covered in the short span of 15 tracks on this (short) third set
Disc Four: "Still Digging In The Mines"
November 2018 a record company in the UK contacted Iain about boxing up the three Orphans & Outcasts records and was he interested in assembling a fourth disc to be included in this box along side the first three? Iain agreed to the challenge and put together another group of 'outcasts' and he may agree with me that this current edition is the best disc of the ever growing bunch to see a release to the masses. The best part of this fourth set can be found from track two (a live "Seven Bridges Road") thro track twelve ("Anchor Me.") "Nothing's Changed" "Voices" "Living in Reverse" (I still think it needs a home in the live concerts the man plays!) "Ballad of Gruene Hall" and "Horse Left in the Rain" are amazing songs that should be played on all the radios found on the planet. This is groundbreaking to find so much wonderful music all together in one place. Yeah, for now the last CD is my favorite of the bunch and there is more stored away in an attic in The Netherlands so don't despair I have a feeling there will be a volume five, six seven and....
We got lucky (again) as Iain Matthews is still out there and producing such great music for us to enjoy.
Here is my raised glass to many more years of music as created by Iain Matthews.
The man has found the keys to the car.
Enjoy the ride!

Iain Matthews, though, isn’t “most artists”, and this 4-disc set is one that you don’t need to be a Matthews fan to enjoy. In a career stretching right back to folk-rock pioneers Fairport Convention, he has proved himself to be amongst the finest rock-pop vocalists that Britain has ever produced.
Always a good picker of songs to cover, he’s also one of our finest songwriters, having hit a rich vein of form as far back as the start of the 1990s. It’s hard, if not impossible, to think of anyone who puts composition and performance together to these levels.
This set covers most of his career, starting with the folk-rock era, and including his ‘electronic’ period in the early 1980s with the band Hi-Fi. Particular gems here include a beautifully remastered take of his 1970 hit ‘Woodstock’, and some great unused material from the ground-breaking ‘Walking A Changing Line’ album released in 1988.
If you’re new to Iain’s music, this might not be the place to start (where you really need ‘Stealin’ Home’, ‘Walking a Changing Line’, anything from his Austin period in the 1990s, and any CDs you can find from the ‘Notebook’ series).
If you’re even passingly familiar with this great singer-songwriter, though, this set offers a blend of variety and sheer quality that is hard to match.
