With its swinging 60s aesthetic, Marty Feldman's satire of advertising and the puritanical Mary Whitehouse mob is very of its time - though I daresay that the 'sex sells' bottom line of advertising is still relevant - but as a film it lacks the bite of Peter Cook's vehicle The Rise and Rise of Michael Rimmer which ploughed a similar forrow around the same time. I was expecting this to be another of those lame, sex romps that were everywhere in the Seventies. But, it’s a surprising entertaining film, satirising the use of sex in advertising – in this case to sell porridge! Marty Feldman is an idol of mine so doesn't need to work too hard to impress me but I also thought Judy Cornwell was excellent as his wife Liz and that they played well off each other.
British sex comedy with more to offer than moldy old men ogling beautiful young girls. In this satire of the marketing business, Marty Feldman’s an adman obsessed with selling porridge with pure sex. As he tries to create the perfect campaign he inserts himself into his comic fantasies. The often potent satire compensates for the occasional leering, and the stylized, fantasy set-pieces give Feldman plenty of room to do zany. There’s a high number of leaden gags, but the inspired jokes — like the brawl between the adman and the priest in a movie prop room — keeps the entire production on the level. Your appreciation for EVERY HOME SHOULD HAVE ONE probably depends on your Feldman tolerance. I enjoyed it — despite recognizing its many flaws. There’s a creative spark that’s not often present in sex comedies of this variety.
As zany and wayward as Marty Feldman’s eyeballs, this freewheeling satire of sex in advertising revels in late 60s sexual and racial incorrectness - take a bow, scriptwriters Barry Took and Denis Norden. Though its targets are more miss than hit, the pastiche and animated interludes, and popup appearances from the likes of Frances de la Tour, Alan Bennett and Penelope Keith (wearing swastika’d iron cross and heavy teutonic accent) atone for the tiresome plot.
Undoubtedly the best British sex comedy I've seen. Sprinkled throughout the film are short vignettes or fantasy sequences which really only serve to distract from the plot, but they were funny to me all the same. The idea of coming up with an ad pitch wasn't focused on as much as I thought, and gets forgotten about quickly. There weren't any standout jokes either, but it made me feel as though I had ADHD so it's getting a 3. It's hard to explain.
Mildly fun sex comedy with Marty Feldman as a big plus, who plays an ad executive who fantasises all sorts of weird Billy Liar-type fantasies... feels like some sort of prototype of Reggie Perrin
