"A brilliant and glittering jewel of a novel. I was wholly swept away by this story."--Allison Pataki, New York Times bestselling author of The Queen's Fortune
“A tale of daring and determination, set against the glamorous heights, and the harsh restrictions of aristocratic society in the middle years of the British nineteenth century."--Sir Julian Fellowes, creator of "Downton Abbey"
From one of the most famous former members of the British royal family, Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York —a mesmerizing novel of a young noblewoman’s coming-of-age that richly details both high society and low in Victorian England.
Queen Victoria’s close friend, the Scottish Duke of Buccleuch, Lady Margaret Montagu Scott is expected to make an advantageous marriage. But Margaret is an impulsive and outspoken girl in a repressive society where women are, quite literally, caged in corsets and required to conform.
When Lady Margaret’s parents arrange a society marriage for her, she tries to reconcile herself to the match. But shortly before her betrothal is announced, Margaret flees, leaving her parents to explain her sudden absence to an opulent ballroom stuffed with two hundred distinguished guests.
Banished from polite society, Margaret throws herself into charitable work and finds strength in a circle of female friends like herself—women intent on breaking the mold, including Queen Victoria’s daughter Princess Louise. Margaret resolves to follow her heart—a journey of self-discovery that will take her to Ireland, America, and then back to Britain where she finds the life she was always meant to lead.
A bold and thoughtful story about a rebellious woman finding herself and her voice in an age of astounding technological change and great social unrest, Her Heart for a Compass is a delicious costume drama rich in atmosphere, history, and color.

In the first few chapters there was 'American' terminology - eg: drapes instead of curtains which I disliked and thought was just pandering to the anticipated US readers. Not language that would have been used at that time by the protagonists. Fortunately that stopped so the irritation stopped.
I enjoyed it more than I anticipated since it is the author's first book aimed at an adult audience.
Writing historical fiction is clearly Sarah’s calling. For a debut novel, this was excellent, and she can only get better from here. It’s a shame she didn’t start writing decades ago because she could easily outpace the top writers of this genre. I am off to read her second novel, and hope there’s a 3rd coming soon!
The story takes place over many years and follows the life of Lady Margaret Montagu Scott. Not ready for marriage, especially to the man her father has picked for her, Margaret acts rashly on the night that their betrothal was to be announced. From that moment life for her really begins. It certainly isn't all sunshine and roses, equally, it isn't all doom and gloom for her. What she does, who she meets, her friendships, and loves, and where she goes all make fascinating, exciting reading. Although a work of fiction, knowing it is based on some real-life people and places made it all the more intriguing for me. The amount of research that went into the book shows and is very much appreciated. It really helps to set the scene when you can read all about what people are wearing and/or the places they are visiting etc.
I thoroughly enjoyed every moment of this story and definitely recommend it.
Couldn’t put it down
I had originally thought I wouldn’t like this book but it is really worth reading especially when you discover that Sarah is descended from the characters in the book.
Definitely deserves the 5 stars I’ve given it.
