Jimmie Lunceford (06.06.1902 - 12.07.1947): American multi-instrumentalist and bandleader. Played saxophone, clarinet, flute, guitar and trombone. Studied music with Paul Whiteman's father.
Started as a professional bandleader in 1927. A contract at the Cotton Club (Harlem, N.Y.) from 1934 (as successor to Cab Calloway) led to much success.
He recorded for Victor (1930), Decca (from 1930), Vocalion (from 1938) and again for Decca.
1937: extensive tour through Europe.
1940: his arranger (since 1934) and trumpeter Sy Oliver left for Tommy Dorsey's orchestra (who offered him $5000 a year, Lunceford paid his musicians badly) and after that a decline set in.
In 1947 Lunceford died unexpectedly of a heart attack.
