Good historical story of Russia and the war economy and how stealing horses was so important to it. Good acting by known stars

Set in olde Ukraine, it's a story of genial horse-thieves who make a big score when they outsmart the Russian General (Yul Brynner) and take away all the Russian Army horses.
An interesting story, especially if you like horses. Has some very funny moments; but does have some sexual content and a few racist comments against Jews.

Moviebox came broken, for future references - don't send broken stuff to clients.

I suppose it is not a bad movie. But to understand this, one needs to see it - which is all but impossible with this DVD. Obviously the image was transferred from a bad quality VHS without any corrections made to the picture. The screen is dark, everything is foggy and even scratchy a bit. It is quite a disspointment as the cast is interesting, the characters exotic and the period is one not often covered in any movies.

I bought this DVD, along with several others, for my mom, a lifelong Yul Brynner fan. She had seen the movie when released in 1971, and looked forward to hear Lanie Kazan sing "Tonight is a night without music". It's supposed to have been a good movie, and I can sort of see that, but...
...Unfortunately, this is a very poorly made DVD, obviously a copy of a VHS tape that itself wasn't very good, as there are many film scratches visible; It seems no effort was made to restore the original film.
The picture quality of this DVD is so abysmal, that the many nighttime scenes are almost pitch black, with virtually no detail visible. And the sound is so muddied and muffled, that much of the dialogue is unintelligable.
Luckily I paid under four bucks for this DVD, shipping included, so it's probably not worth the effort to return, and from what I can determine searching the web, there's no alternative if you want to see this film.
As another reviewer stated, with such bad quality, and simplified artwork on the packaging, have to wonder if it really is just another poorly made commercial offering, or perhaps a home-made bootleg disc.

I first saw this film in 1971. I recently obtained a DVd of it and was delighted to find it as I remembered it. Gentle, intelligent, funny, warm, and - did I remember to say funny? Not unlike Mel Brooks "The Twelve Chairs", but less raucous. Yul Brynner and Eli Wallach obviously enjoy themselve as they vie for Lanie Kazan's affections and David Opatashu (as was his custom) underplays and steals the film. And it has a great ending as well.

I remember seeing this film years ago and enjoyed it, but the DVD I bought through Amazon (from a third party seller) was unwatchable. It wouldn't play in either of my DVD's or my computer. The DVD case artwork and the DVD itself looked to be low-quality productions. Looked like a bootleg. I returned it.
I would like to see this film released in high-quality by the original studio/production company

The actual film is good but the image quality has degraded over time and needs proper restoration to improve viewing on DVD medium.
