The Farmer in All of Us: An American Portrait Hardcover – May 6, 2014
by
Paul Harvey
(Contributor)
What began as an ode to the American farmer has evolved into an anthem to an iconic American way of life. Inspiring and moving, the book follows the themes of the heartwarming speech by legendary radio commentator Paul Harvey, “So God Made a Farmer.” Based on the TV commercial watched by millions during "The Big Game" in 2013, this book dives deep into the lives and work of farmers as well as the photographers who captured them. It features more than 200 photographs shot by ten world-class photographers, including National Geographic's William Albert Allard, and shines a spotlight on the American farmer in a compelling photographic poem.

I grew up on a farm. Of the qualities identified in Paul Harvey's essay and reinforced through the photographers pictures and the accompanying text, none stand out more clearly than the character and integrity of the farming community. This book uniquely combines the written word with photography, to define a work ethic and morality that should guide all of us. A special thank you to Dodge Ram for the vision to bring to life, the essay "God made a Farmer". It should rank as one of the best commercial ads ever created. And thank you to National Geographic for creating a coffee table book that keeps all of this at my fingertips.

I was not aware that Paul Harvey had completed an essay on farming and this seemed to be a great gift for my father. He and I have spent many hours in the tractor which included the Paul Harvey show and have always enjoyed hearing "The Rest of the Story". The pictures are beautiful and Paul Harvey is an eloquent speaker. Highly recommended for all farmers and those that would like a view of the lifestyle!

My husband loves this book. I wanted to give him a copy but gave it to our kids instead.

The book is wonderful; it has some amazing pictures that really capture the life of a farmer. It is more of a coffee table book, though. There are some tidbits of information about the photographers, but not much actual reading material. Most of the pictures have a line of information indicating where the picture was taken and on who's farm, but there isn't really any direct information about the farmers, their lives, or what they do. If they had included the occasional page of information on what has driven that particular person to keep the farming tradition alive or some hardships they have had to endure, that would have pushed the book over the edge and I'd have given it five stars. Amazing photography from very talented people though.
