1100 · Vreta Abbey is First Christian Convent

Vreta Abbey was established around 1100 and was the first Christian convent in Sweden. It was located in modern-day Linkoping Municipality. It was founded on orders of Pope Paschal II with large donations by King Inge the Elder and Queen Helena.

Name Meaning

Possibly an Americanized form of South German Zwecker, an occupational name for a nail maker, from Middle High German zweck ‘tack, nail’ + the agent suffix -er.
