The best experience I have had at east as a person of color is the parade at the start of the year called the lancer day parade. It is so fun, and it unites many people and students from freshmen to seniors. The most severe scenario would be the walkout, as in my case, certain individuals were unaware of the events, causing significant distress to the Shawnee mission community as a whole. What I would say that Shawnee mission east high school needs to work on as a whole is its reputation to be a white nepo baby school because that is not the case for everyone. What I love about east high school is its lunch and the library. The library is a welcoming place for all students alike, there is a book club in which you can join. And the librarian updates their recommendations for new books every month, in which I look at when trying to find something that I could enjoy. And about the school lunch is that every thing is edible and taste good & coffee shop which is run by the students.
Shawnee Mission East looks picture perfect on the outside, many academic awards, state championships, and rich donors. The school facilities are fine, the building is really old and doesn't fully adhere to ADA guidelines. There is hardly any diversity due to the area having been redlined in the past, so the school is full of rich white kids. Everyone has a car due to this rich lifestyle, so the parking situation is horrible. The sports teams are okay, the football team sucks, but track and field is awesome. I was a part of the 2021 senior class, so i was completely jipped by covid. This school didn't help me at all with college and making sure I was ready, they also didn't help me with any of my issues regarding academics. My counselor was horrible and didn't care about me, she didn't respond to my emails senior year. Overall bad experience, and I wouldn't recommend this school unless you can pay the money for your kid to live a lavish lifestyle.
During my four years at Shawnee Mission East, I have had the opportunity to learn many different things, as well as observe behavior. I have enjoyed my time at East and it has taught me how to use my time wisely as the AP courses are decently tough, making me feel ready for college. My school lacks diversity, which would be something I would love to see change, but a hard change to make due to demographics.
