A word to the Regency purist

The story has well developed characters, it’s well written, has a good plot, and MOST IMPORTANTLY, it’s clean. (Thank you Ms. Hatch!) Heads’ up though if you’re a Regency purist: this book might not work for you. Phrases like, “that could be a positive or a negative,” “I’m not going to hold my breath on that one,” and “don’t even think about it” nearly killed it for me, BUT like I said, I’m a purist. I like the complicated language of the Regency period and miss it if it’s not there I just wanted others to be aware that it’s not linguistically accurate. It’s a pleasant, clean read, though.

I have had A Proper Scandal by Esther Hatch on my Kindle since December 2020. I had every intention of reading this book as soon as possible, but life had other plans. When I plan my reading for the month, I start with the novels I am obligated to review, then I add to my list one book from NetGalley, one book from my massive TBR pile, and one recently purchased novel. I try to balance between what I must read, what I want to read now, and what I wanted to read in the past. I’m really glad I chose A Proper Scandal for this month’s TBR read. This story is quirky and different and a ton of fun. It’s truly a great read, and a quick one, too. What I liked the most about this story is how unique it is. I have never read a story where the heroine is forced to trap a man into marriage but tells the man upfront what she is doing. I actually laughed out loud several times because this premise is goofy and allows for a ton of silliness to ensue. It works, though, really well and I can say honestly that this is one of my most favorite romances I’ve ever read. I was constantly on my toes. How is Grace going to make Nate fall for her for real? What’s really up with her cousin? How is she going to thwart the evil machinations of her skeezy uncle and come out ahead? Will Nate really go along with Grace’s plan? All these questions kept me turning pages well into the night. I just had to know what was going to happen next. And I really liked how Grace and Nate’s relationship developed. It is truly a journey!

A Proper Scandal is a fantastic Historical Romance that I highly recommend. I really loved this quirky Romance, and I cannot wait to read the next story in this series.

A sweet lovely romance with a HEA

Grace is an orphan. She has been living with the vicars family since her parents died 6 years before. The problem is she is stunningly beautiful and the vicars daughters can't find anyone with her around. So she is sent to London to live with her aunt, who is married to a worthless rake and gambler. Now her uncle need Grace to marry a man to get his large debt forgiven. Problem is that Grace must get him in a compromising situation and be caught so he is forced to marry her.

And so the story goes as she is introduced to a very handsome man that she must trick into marriage. You will enjoy this clean, sweet romance.

I LOVED THIS SO MUCH. One of the best regency romances I’ve read. Hands down. No contest. If you even are remotely interested in the genre, please give this one a chance. As my second great Hatch book, she’s quickly becoming an auto-author for me!

Grace and Nate had such an amazing dynamic. Fantastic banter. Incredibly sweet. They were such a match. I forgot to even note that it was a fast-paced romance because everything worked beautifully. Somehow at odds with each other, yet working together had me mesmerized.

All of the dances, garden escapes, and meet-ups were wonderful. I love how often they actually got to see each other so you could feel the romance building between them. And one thing Hatch does well? KISSING SCENES. They are swoon-worthy and fill your heart with warmth.

I loved this book. I’m excited to continue this series. Read ittttt!

Being new to the proper romance genre, I'm finding that each book I read is showing me pretty quickly what I prefer in these stories. Unfortunately I don't think this author writes ones that are super appealing to me. This was a ⭐⭐⭐ for me, and the one I read prior was a DNF. Dialogue is one of the most important aspects of a book, and I really need *period* dialogue in proper romance, and this is just not a main focus of her writing style. There were also other modern aspects to the plot or the main character's actions that I just found to be unbelievable for the time. LOTS of readers like her books though so this is just my opinion - see for yourself! 😘 it's a very cute book if you're not distracted by the things I mentioned!

I also thought the Uncle was way too creepy for the genre. Idk...he was straight up weird and some of the other reactions from men were not what I've come to expect from this genre or type of book. Maybe I'm placing too many expectations on the content, but in all honesty I was grossed out in a big way by the Uncle and the guy early on that she had to defend herself against.

I would have also liked to have seen a deeper feeling regarding how she was always forced to move or people always left her. There was great emotion that was just right there, but not quite fully explored for a 4 star or higher IMO.

Esther Hatch had me hooked with A Proper Scandal from the first page! So much so that I read it in one day.

Grace Sinclair has lost her parents, her home, and now she is being kicked out of the vicarage mainly because of her looks. We can't have the Pastor's daughter have competition now, can we? So Grace is taken in by her aunt, but, again, her looks are so grand that even her uncle can't keep his hands off of her. What to do, what to do? How about maneuver a way to trap a man into marriage so she can finally be free? That sounds about right.

Nate Barton isn't sure what is going on when a beautiful girl clumsily attempts to trap him in a compromising position. He is onto her plan, but he isn't quite sure why she chose him. For her part, Grace is beautiful but really has no idea what she is doing. The results are often hilarious and, in the end, swoon-worthy.

If you love the Regency Era and clean romantic fiction, you will enjoy this one!

If you want a book with a rom-com feel but set during the 1800's then this is the one for you! It was a little bit of fun, a little bit of silly and a whole lot of romance! There were some aspects of the book I loved and others not so much. I found the characters were a little bit inconsistent, saying and believing one thing but then doing the opposite. Also when reading a historical novel I like to know when and where the novel is set (this is a purely personal preference) but in this story I didn't find out what year it's set in until the second to last chapter. It's 1843 for those who are wondering. I love love loved the chemistry between Grace and Nate and there some oh so lovely romance scenes! I especially loved the scene with the hat and parasol, so cute and funny!

There was nothing at all likable about her she was empty headed and scheming. Trying to make the uncle into the bad guy still doesn’t distract from her not talking real interest in one of her many admirers instead of using her brain she decided to try trap a very nice young man.
