Ministre de la justice: Vichy 1941-1943 : mémoiresThe memoirs of Joseph Barthélemy (1847-1945), written in 1943-45. Ch. 9 (p. 311-324) discusses his attitude to the Jews. Asserts that the anti-Jewish legislation was imposed on the Vichy government by the Germans and that he had nothing to do with this legislation and was not consulted. The text and the editors' notes (p. 314-324) present instances of help given by Barthélemy and his family to many individual Jews. Barthélemy was imprisoned in October 1944, and died of cancer in May 1945. During his time in prison, he was submitted to court examinations. The texts of these examinations are appended on pp. 437-509. |
