Our Editor's Take

Archetypes is a podcast by Meghan Markle. Many people know her as Prince Harry's wife. But this program shows another side of her. It empowers women by challenging the boundaries that limit them. Women don't fit into neat categories. They're complex beings with hopes, fears, and dreams. Markle invites some of today's most influential women to share their stories.

Markle is an American actress and activist. She became the Duchess of Sussex when she joined the English royal family by marrying Prince Harry in 2018. In 2020, the couple removed themselves from their royal duties. They felt the tension between the royal family and them was too much. The two also complained about the British press.

The host tells her story as an American biracial woman who became British royalty. The problematic experience helped Markle understand some of the challenges women face today. She knows what it's like when the media, public, and even family members label a person. "Crazy," "attention seeker," and "ungrateful" are all categories people put women into.

Markle begins one episode by describing watching a commercial as a young girl in school. It shows women cleaning "pots and pans." Then, two boys laugh and say, "Yeah, that's where women belong, in the kitchen." From that day, Markle knew she had a mission. On the podcast, she and her guests reject those labels and explore what it means to be a woman.

Guests include tennis superstar Serena Williams, singer Mariah Carey, and actress Mindy Kaling. When actress Issa Rae comes on, they discuss the "angry Black woman" myth. Comedian and writer Ziwe also joins, along with Professor Emily Bernard. What makes Black women seem angry, and are they angrier than other women? They question whether clear communication makes Black women human rather than "angry."

Another episode features activist Michaela Jaé Rodriguez and author Candace Bushnell. They explore the meaning of freedom. When people live beyond the labels, they can express their distinct humanity.

Listeners of the Archetypes podcast may learn to overcome stereotypes. With Markle and her guests, they can embrace women's fullness. The time is now.
