Two days after David Berman, the songwriter and poet best known for co-founding the indie rock band Silver Jews, died at the age of 52, an anonymous law enforcement official told the New York Times that poet was found in an apartment in Brooklyn and pronounced dead at the scene.
The city’s medical examiner spokeswoman confirmed to the publication that Berman died from suicide by hanging.
“Despite his difficulties, he always remained my special son. I will miss him more than he was able to realize,” his father, Richard Berman, said in a statement.
Berman had long been open about his struggles with mental illness and addiction, including one reported overdose and a suicide attempt in 2003.
Just last month, Berman returned to music with Purple Mountains, the self-titled debut for his newest project. A North American tour for album was scheduled to begin on Saturday (Aug. 10).
