Karl Francis' first feature films had little in common with some of his other gritty works of realism and social justice. Describes this First World War drama as "illuminated by flashes of of raw, visual poetry".
The Sunday Express called it "stunningly acted" and "eloquently photographed" and given, courtesy of Francis' alchemy, "golden dramatic value".
