Despite what the title & cover strongly implies (the "recorded live" is really a subtitle appearing in much smaller print on the booklet cover), this is not a "Best Of" compilation of studio tracks but rather a double CD of two complete live shows, from the early & later phases of the BSO's career (much like the Police's live album, FWIW). The first CD is a show from Montreal around the time of the second BSO album _Guitar Slinger_, the second is a show from Tokyo promoting their fourth album _Va-Voom!_ (specific dates of the shows are not provided). Only "Rock This Town" is included in both shows, so between the two concerts you get absolutely smokin' renditions of pretty much all the best material from all the BSO albums (along with a few other nuggets), so maybe the title isn't so misleading after all.
As you would probably expect if you happen to be fortunate enough to have seen the Brian Setzer Orchestra live, these are dynamite performances that in many cases leave the studio versions of the songs in the dust. The only relatively "blah" spot in the whole thing is unfortunately right near the end of the second disc, where after a fine "Jump, Jive An' Wail" they go into rather rote-sounding performances of the two gimmicky Big Band era covers (with cheesy new lyrics) from _Va-Voom_; "Pennsylvania 6-5000" and "(Gettin') In The Mood". I actually kind of liked the latter song on _Va-Voom_, and I really like the genuine "classic" instrumental versions of both pieces, but sticking them together here just makes them seem overly kitschy, especially when they're followed by, of all things, "Get Me To the Church On Time" (yes, the song from My Fair Lady) before Setzer finally comes to his senses and closes out the show with a crowd pleasing "Rock This Town"
But other than that, it's a fantastic album, probably the most essential Brian Setzer Orchestra album to own.
