Junior: Junior year of GSMST was fun but also challenging at times. I had friends in most of my classes and all my teachers were nice, which made my experience more enjoyable than in previous years. Another positive was the block schedule implemented this year, which introduced a "Flex" session for the students. This gave me extra time within school hours to complete homework, schedule help sessions with teachers, and hang out with friends or leave school early for wellness purposes. Finally, I enjoyed filming and learning to edit videos with my friends in the Digital Media Club, even if it was tiring at times or stressful because our schedules didn't always match up. Some drawbacks of this year were the course load, as I underestimated some classes as "easy" classes and didn't put in as much work as I should have. Parent: During our first tour of Walker in 2018 we were overwhelmed by the warm, welcome from administration, teachers and students. Our oldest son was accepted into the New Avenues program and the first few months were remarkable. He went from crying when asked to read, to coming home with stacks of library books. His ability to decode and his fluency rates increased rapidly. He is now entering Upper School where he will focus studies on Latin and History, subjects requiring a substantial amount of reading and writing. Our younger son enrolled in Pre-K and has flourished thanks to the thoughtful, caring teachers. We appreciate the class sizes at Walker that are small enough for teachers to support every student as needed, but large enough to have diverse friend groups. Lastly, Walker has a genuine and supportive parent community. Junior: Alliance is a great experience for those who want to go there. If you don't want to go then you won't have a super good time. Most of the teachers are really passionate about what they're teaching and/or the clubs that they endorse. There are a few teachers who don't know how to teach, but other than that the teaching is great. The culture itself is a little competitive but, overall, it is an extremely accepting and diverse school that is very supportive and chances are, you won't be alone in anything. Junior: Mount Pisgah has been an incredible fit for me! I grew up at a small k-8th grade school, and my freshman year I went to large public school that I was zoned for. It was not a good fit for me. Alum: I started freshman year and graduated this spring! I loved my high-school experience and do not wish I had gone anywhere else. But I will say, the school is going down hill. Each year, the incoming freshman are more misbehaving and way less academically disciplined than the last. It is sad to see such a great school that values freedom and the honor system turn into a place that is almost indistinguishable from any other institution. It is not too late for the school to turn itself around. But I will say that students are testing the boundaries more and more every day with vaping in the bathrooms, skipping class, and bullying on social media. Other: This high school was a great high school to attend. As a music student, I had the time of my life. The music teachers (band, orchestra, chorus) teachers are almost like siblings, so every class has a warm family like community connected with it. I also have great pride in our music program, as it is one of the best in this region and maybe even the state. The amount of awards the school has collected over the years proves that. This is also one of the only schools that has a symphony-orchestra where the band, chorus, and orchestra all combine to do magical things. I'd say my worst experience is how strict the school can be sometimes. Detention is handed out like candy for the most trivial things, such as coming into class twenty seconds late, or eating too far from the building outside during lunch.... Read 629 reviews
