Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

What travellers are saying
- Etzammata GOnehunga, New Zealand1 contributionThe pathway was very well made I had no trouble at all navigating the paths!
The waterfall was really nice, and the views were splendid!Written 28 January 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Can't get any easier. If you visit the next day after heavy rain you will see an amazingly powerful waterfall!
If you fancy a hike, 15 minutes away are a variety of fantastic tracks (google Wairoa loop track carpack). We've done a suspension bridge walk with a 6 year old. There were a lot of steps, a lot of climbing at the first half of the track but you were rewarded with amazing views of the valley and the Wairoa dam. The walk is very beutiful in the forest, majority of the time you are covered from the sun.Written 30 December 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Great scenery and beautiful waterfall!
However, when we got back to our vehicle our passenger window was broken. "They" had broken into our vehicle and stole 3 backpacks, my Tom Tom runners watch and a mobile phone. 2 Other vehicles was also broken into (one lady's passport was stolen... suppose to fly out of NZ in 3 days.. what a hassle).Written 15 April 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The parking lot is small and loacted ACROSS the road from the trail. You will have to take a few minutes to look around and locate it - across the road and uphill. There you will find a DOC sign telling you that it is Karekare Falls. The trail itself is easy and clear to follow. And the reward is this stupendous waterfall! We took our lunch and had a picnic while enjoying the waterfall all by ourselves. Though the parking lot was full, many folks didn't look across the road for the trailhead! We saw many waterfalls in NZ, but this was one of the easiest hikes to find a great waterfall. Caution: clean your shoes, etc., as this is an area rangers are trying to protect from kauri dieback disease. Be respectful and pack out your trash. This waterfall was pristine. Please leave it that way for future visitors!Written 4 January 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- robinby04Auckland, Auckland, New Zealand125 contributionsThis is a nice walk through New Zealand's bush, that takes no more than 20 minutes to reach the waterfall.
The drive to the car park is along a windy gravel road, that is long, be careful.
Once you get to the falls, you arrive on a deck looking out to them from above. There are 2 different waterfalls here which makes it quite special. You have the option to walk down a set of steep stairs to get to the base of the falls, here you can get right up to the falls and also theres a rather huge boulder with foot holes carved into the side so you can climb to the top.Written 2 January 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. It's a fairly decent sized swimming hole and there's usually a few people here. You can walk up the right hand side of the waterfall to it's head and then easily follow up the stream for about a 1 km. There is private property to east of the stream though that'[s easily accessible so be careful your don't stray on to it.Written 19 May 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - PugHuggerAdelaide, Australia5,682 contributionsWe stopped briefly to have a look on our way north. The falls were easy enough to find using Google Maps. We only did the short walk down to the falls and not the longer one (or the unofficial track I read of). The falls themselves were not inspiring but the walking track was nice and green and cool.
This place is worth a quick pit stop. Just don't expect cascading waterfalls. The walk was more picturesque.Written 26 May 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. It is a steepish decline down so it's not suitable for an elderly person. The water isn't clear so it's not that nice to swim in. Great for the dogs! Be aware there is no phone signal down there, I personally wouldn't go down by myself for this reason.Written 22 July 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - AcinetoAuckland Central, New Zealand23,147 contributionsThe Karamatura Loop walk can go to the Karamatura falls. There is a small carpark at the entrance of the walk. You follow the signs which lead you to the falls. We opted on heading through the trail to get to the top of Donald McLean Lookout.
The falls are about a half hour walk from the carpark. Once you cross the river, there should be signs that head to the falls.
The walk is quite nice and fairly covered by bush. There are quite a bit of stairs involved if you are wanting to go all the way up. The track looks fairly new and very well maintained. It was quite a nice walk through the bush. We followed the Karamatura track all the way to Mt Donald McLean walk to get to the summit.
It was an enjoyable hike and didn't take too long, about 4h return to Don McLean lookout.Written 15 November 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
