William Darling (Frankie Howerd), the popular and indispensable hall porter at London’s Royal Connaught Hotel, inherits a fortune (£10,000).
After a spree on the French Riviera, Darling – still with thousands of pounds in hand – plans a big future for the old-fashioned hotel. The trouble starts when he tries to put his schemes into operation with the aid of three hard-headed northern financial backers (Reginald Beckwith, Willoughby Goddard and Alfie Bass).
Singer Ruby Murray makes her only film appearance as Darling’s girlfriend, while Dennis Price is in his element as slightly superior hotel manager Digby Hatchard who eventually has to take orders from his erstwhile hall porter.
Richard Wattis, Miriam Karlin and Esma Cannon co-star.
Filmed at Nettlefold Studios in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey.
