Sunrisers Hyderabad qualified for the IPL 2024 playoffs on Thursday. This was the first time in the last four seasons that SRH have been able to go beyond the group stage. In the last three seasons – 2021, 2022 and 2023 – they were eliminated in the group stage of the tournament. Many are calling this a Pat Cummins effect.
SRH made it to the playoffs after the match against Gujarat Titans was washed out due to heavy rains. The covers were taken off and put back on several times. There was some buzz around the 5-over match but in the end, as the downpour worsened, the IPL officials decided to call off the match. This is the second time that IPL 2024 has seen a washout.
Before this, the GT vs KKR match was abandoned due to heavy rains in Ahmedabad. This means that GT’s last two matches saw not a single ball being bowled. The heavy rains denied them a chance for a win, which captain Shubman Gill would have definitely liked. The two points of the match were divided among both teams. Now, SRH are on number 3 in the IPL points table.
While they have not been able to beat RR in the race of top two, it is still very much a possibility. For this, SRH need to win their last league match against Punjab Kings with a huge margin. Pat Cummins and co would also want Rajasthan Royals to lose their last league match against Kolkata Knight Riders. While this is not entirely impossible, there are two many ifs and buts in the equation.
In addition to all this, IPL Playoffs still need one more team to qualify. Between Delhi Capitals, Chennai Super Kings, Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Lucknow Super Giants anything is possible as of now.
