College coeds in New York City, Al, the son of a celebrity chef, and Imogen, a talented artist, become smitten the second they lay eyes on one another at a bar. However, the road to happiness is not a smooth one. Freddie Prinze Jr and Julia Stiles star in this romantic comedy as college students Al and Imogen, the story following these two (along with their various ups & downs) over a period of time.
There’s really two movies going on at the same time here: one a more intimate relationship story, and the other containing some slightly offbeat aspects. Surprisingly, it’s filled with lots of quirky little cutaways and flourishes presumably inspired by Woody Allen’s movies, director Kris Isacsson mixing character driven moments with an inventive (and slighly surreal) touch.
This helps add something fresh to the story, which comes across best at the start especially, Al and Imogen directly talking to us as they look back at what went wrong.…
An early 00s rom-com starring Freddie Prinze Jr. and Julia Stiles that I haven’t seen?? Weird.
This was kind of offbeat and I can understand why it never got the attention that it’s counterparts did. It’s told mostly in flashbacks from our two main characters speaking directly to the camera... a trope that really encapsulates the time.

al should have abandoned his dreams of being a french culinary chef and done the "cooks" show with his dad which is, as we all know, a show where they go to peoples' houses with guns and teach them how to cook. that had a lot of potential.

lmfao this is a real who’s who of the 90s teen scene (julia stiles, fpj, rosario, selma blair, ashton, and, bizarrely, henry winkler) and yet, even with a star-studded cast like this, there is only one memorable thing about this movie: that fpj tries to drink julia’s shampoo to kill himself
