On the 9th of March 2024, our SBRI team participated in the East London CANSA Relay 2024. The day was filled with joy and team spirit as we celebrated those who had won the fight against cancer, and honoured those who fought bravely and did not.
It was a beautiful afternoon at the Hamilton Sport’s club, with music, singing and many hours of walking together. Together with many other teams, we shared in the message of hope that was the focus of this year’s CANSA Relay. Hope for those who continue to fight cancer, and for those who are coming to terms with the loss of their loved ones.
The CANSA Relay is aimed at providing everyone the opportunity to “walk in the shoes” of Cancer survivors and caretakers, as they fight to reclaim their health. Luminaria candles were lit at sunset, to remember all those fighting and lost to cancer, and the light that their lives continue to shine, brightened the darkness of the night.
We have many participants and colleagues whose lives have been touched by cancer in some way, and we were honoured to stand with them in solidarity in the fight against cancer.
Clinical Research is an essential part of finding more effective, tolerable ways to fight the many cancers that plague our society. It is vital that while researchers continue to strive for advancements, we all take the time to screen for symptoms, look at your family history, and have regular check-ups.
By increasing awareness, striving for more effective treatments, and working together with your healthcare providers, there really is hope.
