Let me tell you something about the Bosa family.

Cheryl Kumerow Bosa, there’s a lot of Ohio State in that name. Her brother Eric Kumerow was a two-time All-Big Ten selection in 1986 and ’87 and was a Buckeye captain for the ’87 season as well. Her sons are Joey and Nick Bosa, two All-Americans who need no introduction here.

Over the past six years, I’ve become great friends with Cheryl Bosa. She’s a wonderful lady and an Ohio State graduate as well. Always so gracious and generous with her time to all Buckeye fans who approach her. She’s Ohio State through and through.

When I was initially going through my first bout with cancer, Cheryl was right there. She donated items to my benefit and even asked Urban Meyer to send me a text wishing me well in my battle. And he did. Urban Meyer doesn’t know me personally and wouldn’t even recognize me at his press conference, but at Cheryl’s urging, he sent me a text which I cherish to this day.

She married a great man, John Bosa, who although he is not a Buckeye by graduation status, he’s a proud Buckeye father of Joey and Nick. The two are no longer married but they maintain what seems to be a very close relationship.

Both Cheryl and John were introduced to our tailgate in the second game of Joey’s freshman year in 2013 and Cheryl has been a regular to our tailgate ever since. In fact, we had to think if Cheryl ever missed a home tailgate in five of the six years she came. The Tulane home game this year may have been her first miss. Our tailgate broke up last season and although we all kept in touch, we all sort of went our different ways to other tailgates for the most part.

But this year was going to be special we all thought so we decided to reinstate our same tailgate for what we deemed to be “Nick’s senior year.” In case you still might have been wondering, before the injury, if Nick would come back for his senior season, all you had to do was ask anybody at our tailgate. No surprise there.

We even coined a slogan for our tailgate.

Because of the friendship I have built with Cheryl and her people, I have been privy to a lot of things over the years, like when Nick was being recruited for instance. But I would never compromise my relationship with Cheryl in any way. Our friendship always came first and she has never considered me a media person.

But I felt I wanted to say something unsolicited on their behalf to give a different perspective to what has transpired for their family over the past four days and even longer than that.

This past weekend was supposed to be a great weekend for the Bosa family, who before the season was planning to go to Nick’s game against Minnesota and then to Joey’s game for the Los Angeles Chargers against the Cleveland Browns up the road on Sunday.

It didn’t turn out that way, though. Both Nick and Joey were on the shelf. Injuries, they’re a vicious part of football at all levels, particularly in college and the professional ranks. The Bosa family knows this well.

Clearly at some point in the recent past, they made a family decision. They know all the facts. Not some of the facts or what they heard from other people. They know all the ingredients that went into the decision.

At the home tailgate against Indiana, Cheryl invited me and another close friend to dinner after the Minnesota game. My friend and I presumed it would be at Nick’s apartment, as we had done last season on a couple of occasions.

But during the week, she sent us a text that said: “Lindey’s 7 p.m. be there or be square.”

Interesting. That’s where we had dinner after Joey’s last home game against Michigan State in 2015.

It turns out we had a four-hour dinner. And we even celebrated Nick’s birthday. When Nick and his friends left to do what young people do on a Saturday after a Buckeye win, the adults stuck around to share some love and reminisce about the past.

Nick’s injury wasn’t in the plans by any means. But the injury has certainly dictated the course of action going forward.

No one really knows how agonizing it’s been for Nick to watch his team on the television first before he was able to even be on the sideline for the past two games. I caught him once with a towel over his head on the bench during the Indiana game.

No one really knows just how bad Nick’s injury actually is or even if or when he’d be able to come back without any risk of tearing it again.

No one really knows how much Cheryl Bosa, as a mother, has cried over all of this in the recent weeks.

No one really knows how tough it was for John Bosa to give Urban Meyer the news on Sunday or how hard it was on Nick to have to tell his teammates he’ll never play another down with them.

I’ve actually heard some people say Nick quit on his teammates just to get ready for the NFL. There is no quit in Nick Bosa. There is reality, however. This is all about reality. Nick has a bright future in the NFL just like Joey does. But he needs time to heal and even more time for rehab. Hello!

You really think Nick is going to enjoy watching the Michigan game or dare I say a national championship game against Alabama in the comfort of some apartment in California where he’ll be rehabbing and preparing for the NFL draft?

Man, do we miss Nick. I’m glad I got to tell him that before he hit the town on Saturday night. He’s a great kid off the field, too. Everyone that was in the room on Saturday night certainly knows that. And he comes from great people. I’m just glad to have been along for the ride.
