Donald Glourie shares his crumbling ancestral home with the ghost of his Highland ancestor, Murdoch, who has been condemned to haunt the castle until he avenges a 200-year-old insult from a rival clan. To clear his mounting debts, Donald sells the dilapidated pile to an American businessman, Mr Martin, who has the castle complete with the Glourie ghost transported and rebuilt in Florida. While old-world gentility rubs up comically against 20th-century materialism, Martin's daughter takes a liking to both Donald and Murdoch, convinced they are one and the same man...

The Ghost Goes West is one of those gems that nobody knows about. It is funny, charming, and surprisingly romantic. Not for the Bruce Willis crowd. But if you want a funny, witty hour-plus of entertainment this film will not disappoint you. The sound is typical of early British cinema- kind of poor- but turn it up a bit higher and it's just fine. Under this label it's a GREAT print too.

I should mention that we recorded it on Beta about 20 years ago off TV when AMC found and broadcast it, and we've been living with that since then and I am so happy that it's available commercially.

I have loved this movie since I was a child, the lead actor is reminiscent of Errol Flynn (if you can remember him you are probably as old as me ;) ) The story line is hysterical..a couple buys a haunted castle and moves it block by block back to the US and of course the resident ghost goes with it. It is fun, romance and tears all rolled into one. Love it. If you don't have a VHS player try and find it in DVD format.

Very dated but fun

I saw this movie in the theater when I was about 12 and remembered it fondly. Recently, I found this DVD version and it is still enjoyable although the print is poor and sound pretty mushy. It was made about 1934 and sound was problematic in those days anyway. The story is of a Scottish laird who is more interested in romancing girls than fighting in the war and, as a result, gets blown up. The accidental death is handled with a bit of heavy handed humor and a rival clan is implicated in the event. The ghost of the laird is ordered by his departed father to remain haunting the castle until he revenges the family honor on a descendent of the offending rival clan. This is greatly complicated by the sale of the castle by the last of the family who is broke and glad to be rid of it. The castle is dismantled and shipped to Florida accompanied by the ghost. Robert Donat plays both parts and the romantic interest, the daughter of the rich businessman who buys the castle, is played by a pretty actress I have not seen in anything else. One novelty is a thin and pretty Elsa Lancaster, playing a small part. It is still not bad but the quality of reproduction is pretty poor.

The special effects are quite good for a movie of its era. The story
MIGHT seem familiar if you're a "Twilight Zone" fan. Rod Serling re-
worked it for one my favorite episodes with Burgess Meredith, and,
Don Rickles. It was aired on 3/3/'61, "MR DINGLE, THE STRONG".
The plot----there----is changed a bit to being galactic-aliens giving
Mister Dingle the strength of 300 men... and the intelligence of the
300 brightest minds.... no, wait... that was THE MAN THAT COULD
WORK MIRACLES... this is sorta like THE CANTERVILLE GHOST
(1944)... just older. Get all three... AND The Twilight Zone, too!

René Clair`s comic, romantic fantasy from 1935 is still an engaging and charming tale well worth discovering or re-acquainting one's self with now it is available on DVD.

In this classic little film, Clair sets out to gently satirise the American taste for kitsch, while delivering a pleasing romance featuring Jean Parker and Robert Donat in the dual role of Donald Glourie and his ghostly ancestor Murdoch – doomed to haunt the family castle until he can avenge a rival clan's insult. The twist is that the castle is bought by a millionaire (Eugene Pallette) and shipped to Florida, ghost and all.
Featuring a hokey old idea of 18th century Scotland and some special effects that were novel for the time (though they won't impress anyone today) it's good humoured, amusing and whimsical; a pretty international venture - given the breadth of talents responsible - this was a hugely successful British film in it's day, produced by Alexander Korda.
It's just a shame that Network have only managed to find a fairly indifferent print to transfer, with no apparent re-mastering; the picture quality is watchable but marked with lines, flaws and speckles throughout and the sound is variable and rather poor, which must, I'm afraid cost the DVD a star in rating.

On a more positive note, at least the film is available in region 2 and still as entertaining as it ever was. The only extras on the DVD are an image gallery and a script PDF.

I have always enjoyed this movie, as a fan of the older movies when plots were original and the cast generally survived to the end of the picture. The mistake I made - and it is my mistake, not theirs, is that the disk is in PAL (European) as opposed to the North American NTSC standard. The disc appears in good shape, but I fear it will remain unplayed until such time as I get a play that can handle both standards.
