Product Description

Gore Vidal, the blustery and the brilliant, never shied away from slinging his stinging opinions about government, his contemporaries and the American people in general, conversely eliciting cheers and jeers. Now, less than a year after his death, Gore Vidal: The United States of Amnesia brings the lionhearted man back to the screen. Anchored by intimate, one-on-one interviews with the man himself, Nicholas Wrathall's documentary is a fascinating and wholly entertaining tribute to the iconic Vidal, diving into his years on the page, the screen and the scene. With commentary by those who knew him best, including filmmaker/nephew Burr Steers and the late Christopher Hitchens, plus loads of footage from his legendary on-air career, Wrathall reminds us why Vidal will forever stand as one of the most dazzling and fearless critics of our time.

Highly entertaining...a fine memorial to one of 20th-century America s most brilliant, original and cranky thinkers --Variety

Entertaining....a thorough, skillfully assembled chronology --The New York Times

The cinematography is exquisite....everything is gloriously vivid, and the archival footage blends seamlessly into the meat of the film. --IFC.com

Gore Vidal is my hero. He is funny, intelligent, interesting, worldly, and just the best kind of person to grace our times. If you need a feel good documentary to counter the deficiencies and immorality in politics today, this is it. Gore will show you the light.

Everyone should watch this film along with "Bring Me Roger Stone," to see who is really running this country. There really is no two party system, it's all about who has the money and who can be bought. Integrity is something that is no longer necessary in the political arena. Money & power rule the day.

This is a good review of the older Vidal: If less caustic, he is more candid and therefore even more critical. I give it the highest recommendation.

Excellent documentary. One of several excellent documentaries on Gore Vidal. Already watched it and enjoyed it. Nice summation of Vidal's life. My only gripe is the volume is too low. Not the fault of the seller, but the fault of the distributor.

Good insight into a complicated man.

I have always admired this man but after reading this book, it am totally and completely in LOVE. He joins the ranks of my heroes, people I admire and who inspire me. So few understand that sexual love cannot exist in a long term marriage or friendship. That is found outside the home. Amen!

Fairly well done survey of this iconoclast's journey from playmate of Amelia Earhart to politician and successful screenwriter/Novelist -Intimate passages of him writing and living in his Italian "castle". As a subject, Vidal is fascinating!

Not a bad documentary, but if you go to YouTube you can see previously made documentaries about Vidal ("Gore Vidal's Gore Vidal," which the BBC did back in 1995, and PBS's 2000 documentary "The Education of Gore Vidal" ) that are just as good if not a bit better. In fact, this latest Vidal documentary contains clips from the earlier ones I've mentioned. Still, "Gore Vidal: United States of Amnesia" is well worth a look.
