James Madison University (JMU) is a public institution located in Harrisonburg, Virginia. Looking at the information: According to the 2024 edition of Best Colleges by US News, JMU is ranked #124 among National Universities1. It is considered a tier 2 school, it still falls within the average category of national universities. Additionally, JMU ranks 243rd in the United States and 884th globally across 122 research topics. JMUs in-state tuition and fees are $13,576, while out-of-state tuition and fees are $30,790. This is really steep to pay this much for a Tier 2 school. JMU does not have the academic reputation and is not at the top, crucial to recognize that job placement depends on various factors, including individual effort, networking, and internships. This will require a Graduate to work twice hard to achieve positions that the top tier graduate receive. In summary, JMU is not a top-tier university.
I am a double Duke, and I loved every minute of my time at JMU. The campus is beautiful, the faculty is talented and nurturing, and the student body is positive and dedicated. I grew tremendously as a person and as a professional through my experiences at JMU.
James Madison University is big on student engagement. There is something for everyone, and it is just a matter of time before you find your place at the school. However, the same does not go for academics. While the level of difficulty is not the problem, the professors are. Even though there are great professors, a good number of professors make their classes impossible and when students do evaluations at the end of each semester, there are no consequences for the professors inability to teach.
JMU is an awesome school. It is pretty big but often doesn't feel like it. There are a ton of things to do on campus and many clubs/orgs to get involved with. The only negative thing is that freshman dorm suck but they are working on redoing some of them.
I had a great time here. It is an amazing campus; I would do it all again if I could! The food options are great they change it up all the time. There is a lot to do around the campus like rollerskating, food, and other recreational activities.
I loved JMU! Great academics, tons of resources, tons of ways to get involved, beautiful campus, great off campus life, and great party scene. I would 100% recommend JMU to everyone! Go dukes!
I love JMU, the culture is great, very knowledgeable professors and the are a lot of resources for students
I overall didn’t hate my time here. But I never felt 100% welcome. I was never told anything and no one ever did anything but I didn’t feel like I belonged. I did love my time in the College of Education, everyone was welcoming and cared about me.
What I love about James Madison University is how they have so many opportunities to meet new people. JMU is always encouraging students to go out to the many events the school holds. This includes sports games, greek life philanthropy events, student organization night, and many more.
I had a great experience at JMU. I was a kinesiology major and all the professors were amazing! definitely felt cared for by my professors and they were always willing to take the time to answer my many questions. As for general education professors, they could be hit or miss, but overall very attentive to the student's education. I was never into the party scene, but that is big here with greek and non-greek life. There is always a party going on, if you are into that, and other campus events on the weekends or club events. Sports are getting bigger here since we have entered the Sunbelt league. Once you find the right community, this place will feel like home. Whether that is a club you join, academic peers, or an outside community, there is something for everyone. I started at JMU the year before COVID hit, so I was all in-person and then all online. Now with things back to normal, it is all in person, but they give access to recordings for extra studying, which is nice.
JMU is for everyone. Initially when applying I was not interested in JMU but then I visited the college and was blown away. Everyone is so incredibly kind and caring on campus and it’s just beautiful.
I went for business and should’ve saved my money because I learned nothing. Everyone is just drunk and parties all the time. I’m fine with a party now and then but people were doing drugs and ambulances had to be called at least 3 times when I went there. None of my friends have jobs, either—the only thing their 4 years at JMU gave them was alcoholism.
LOVE JMU!!! There is such a community feel and you really get all aspects of college while at JMU!!!
The campus is nice, a lot of my friends attend JMU. The athletics is really good especially Football and Basketball.
James Madison University is a great school. It had a good mix of fun and academics. It's sports teams are up and coming. I would highly recommend this school.
Student life is entertaining and the classes are very educational. I love meeting different professors that range from Russian profs to statistic nerd profs. The campus is beautiful and is very nice when the temperature starts rising.
I loved being able to attend James Madison University. It helped me figure out who I am and want to continue being in the future. It's an experience I would not trade for anything. I am part of SADAH which stands for School of Art, Design, and Art History and I enjoy being around creative people all day long and sharing what new or interesting things we have learned about. For me, I would like to see SADAH seen more throughout JMU's campus. SADAH has been sort of cornered off from the rest of JMU's campus and I think integrating more of the art school throughout campus would benefit the school in several ways.
I am becoming a freshmen at Jmu, and I am very excited. They have everything that I’m looking for to obtain a degree in nursing.
Outstanding school! The classes were academically challenging with accomplished, and caring professors. The campus is absolutely stunning…nestled in the beautifully picturesque Shenandoah valley. There are a variety clubs to join to meet interesting and like minded fellow students.
A wonderful university with amazing staff and students!! The best undergraduate experience! Downtown Harrisonburg has great food and plenty of local establishments!
