Piyush Chawla is an Indian cricketer who has played all three formats for the Indian national team. He was born on 24 December 1988 in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh. He is a right-arm leg break bowler, and bats left-handed. He is seen as an all-rounder in domestic cricket and is a specialist bowler in international cricket.


Although Piyush Chawla's last international match was in 2012, he is still playing in the IPL and continues to make significant contributions. The wrist spinner has played 3 Tests, 25 ODIs, and 7 T20Is, taking 7, 32, and 4 wickets, respectively. He has taken 181 IPL wickets in 184 IPL games, which is the third-highest number in IPL history.


Indian leg-spinner Piyush Chawla has been involved in the IPL since its inception in 2008. Chawla has played for four IPL teams so far. He was among the players of the Indian team that won the T20I World Cup in 2007 and the ODI World Cup in 2011. He currently leads the Mumbai Indians' spin department in the 2024 IPL season.

Piyush Chawla Career


Piyush Chawla is an Indian cricketer who has represented the Indian national team. He was a part of the Indian squad that won the Cricket World Cup in 2011 and the T20 World Cup in 2007. In domestic cricket, he is widely recognized as a leg-spinning all-rounder. He grew up in Moradabad, where he initially learned the basics of cricket by his first coach, Mr. KK Gautam, at Sonakpur Stadium. He has also represented the Central Zone and the India under-19 squad.


Piyush Chawla Domestic Career


At the tender age of 15, Piyush Chawla played for both the Uttar Pradesh U-22 team and the India U-19 team. His key instrument lies in a well disguised googly.


He made his Central Zone debut against South Zone in the Duleep Trophy, and his early performances earned him a good reputation in the domestic circuit. In March 2006, he made his Test debut against England.


Chawla was chosen to play for India B in the 2005–06 Challenger Trophy. Despite bowling just three overs and giving up 21 runs in the opening match, he got two wickets against India A in the next match, and when India B advanced to the Seniors final, he bowled Sachin Tendulkar with a googly. To finish with 3/49, he also dismissed Yuvraj Singh and Mahendra Singh Dhoni. However, the Seniors won by a margin of three wickets. Two weeks later, in the Duleep Trophy, he made his first-class debut for Central Zone against South Zone, scoring sixty runs in an eight-wicket stand of 92 runs with Harvinder Singh. Additionally, he concluded with match with six wickets


He was the leading wicket-taker for Gujarat in the 2017–18 Ranji Trophy, with 32 dismissals in six matches. The leggie was also the leading wicket-taker for Gujarat in the 2018–19 Vijay Hazare Trophy, with sixteen dismissals in eight matches.

Chawla contributed usefully in the two IPL victories for the Kolkata Knight Riders and etched his name in the record books when he scored the winning runs in the 2014 version. Ahead of the 2020 season, Chawla was released by KKR, who then went into the IPL Player Auction with a base price of INR 1 cr. After a bidding war with Kings XI Punjab, Chawla was secured by Chennai Super Kings and became the most expensive capped Indian player. His subtle control with the ball and intelligent use of the conditions made him a vital component of the CSK bowling attack.


The Mumbai Indians later signed him for INR 2.40 crore in the auction after he was released from the CSK team prior to the mini-auction in 2021.


Chawla took one wicket for 38 runs in the league match against Sunrisers Hyderabad. After leaving the MI squad in November 2021, he went unsold at the mega auction that took place in February 2022. In the IPL 2023 mini-auction, MI spent INR 50 lakh to acquire Chawla, and the team's move paid off as Chawla returned with 22 wickets that season.


Piyush Chawla plays in IPL 2024 for the Men in Blue and Gold for a salary of INR 50 lakh.

Indian cricketer Piyush Chawla played in the Indian team between 2006 and 2012. In 2006, he debuted in a Test match against England. In 2007, he debuted in an ODI match against Bangladesh. In 2010, he made his T20I debut against South Africa. In 2012, he played his final international match against England.

Chawla made an impressive debut in ODIs on 12 May 2007, as he picked up three wickets in his first match against Bangladesh. He has been much more successful in the One-day format of the game though bamboozling the English middle-order with a wide assortment of leggies during the Indian tour of England in 2007. He was also a member of the ICC Cricket World Cup-winning Indian squad in 2011.


Piyush Chawla Test Career


Piyush Chawla’s performance in the 2006 U-19 World Cup resulted in his selection for the Indian national side. He played his first Test for the senior side against England. He picked just one wicket in the whole match. He returned to tests only two years later against South Africa, which again was an unsuccessful venture for him. He has played a total of three tests, the last one against England where he made a comeback with impressive figures of 4/69.

Chawla made an entry into the T20 team after successful Indian Premier League seasons on 2 May 2010 against South Africa where he picked up one wicket. He later went on to play the 2010 T20 World Cup too.

Piyush Chawla’s cricketing career started when he played for the India U-19 side. He played his first match, an U-19 test against England in 2004-05 and picked up 13 wickets from two matches. He was just 15 years of age when he made his debut for the U-19 side. In his first-class debut match against South Zone in Duleep Trophy 2005-06, Chawla contributed 60 runs to the eight-wicket stand of 92 runs with Harvinder Singh.


Later in 2005-06, he was a part of the U-19 side that beat Australia 4-1 in a limited overs series. After that, he went on to win the 2006 ICC U-19 Cricket World Cup. Chawla claimed 4 wickets in 8 overs conceding just 8 runs in the 2006 U-19 World Cup final. He also scored unbeaten 25 runs knock in the match. While playing for Sussex County Club in 2009, Chawla took 8 wickets in a match against Worcestershire. He performed quite well with the bat as well by scoring 102 not out after facing only 86 deliveries while batting at number 9. He ended up with stats of 4/8 in the 2006 U-19 World Cup final against Pakistan.
