New NATO Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs

The Secretary General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, Lord Robertson of Port Ellen, announces the appointment of Dr. Günther Altenburg (Germany) to the position of Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs (ASG/PA) with effect from 3 September 2001.

Dr. Altenburg was born on 21 March 1940. During his career, Dr. Altenburg has served as Deputy Head of the Division responsible for disarmament and arms control in the United Nations in the Federal Foreign Office in Bonn, Deputy Head of the Delegation of the Federal Republic of Germany at the CSCE in Vienna, Deputy Head at the CSBM negotiations in Vienna, Deputy Head at the CSCE follow-up meeting in Helsinki, Head of the UN Policy Division in the Federal Foreign Office in Bonn, Head of the Directorate-General for Global Issues, the United Nations, Human Rights and Humanitarian Aid in the Federal Foreign Office of Germany in Berlin.

Dr. Altenburg succeeds Ambassador Klaus-Peter Klaiber (Germany).
