Spider-Man Director Has Advice For The next Director

Marvel Studios hired Jon Watts to direct Spider-Man: Homecoming, a relative unknown. The director had directed the low-budget Clown and Cop Car, but neither suggested he could bring the wall-crawler to the MCU.

Like Sam Raimi and Marc Webb, Watts outperformed his critics with a film that grossed $880.2 million worldwide.

Two years later, Spider-Man: Far From Home grossed over $1.1 billion, and Spider-Man: No Way Home grossed a staggering $1.9 billion (like Homecoming, fans and critics enjoyed both films).

After spending years on Spider-Man, Watts opted to take a sabbatical from the MCU and declined the chance to lead The Fantastic Four. He's now working on Skeleton Crew, a Star Wars TV series, and Spider-Man 4 will have a new director.

Collider approached Watts for recommendations about his successor.

"I have a very practical bit of Spider-Man advice, and I think every Spider-Man director goes through it," he started. "It doesn't look good when someone is just swinging on a rope. You think you're gonna go in there, you're like, 'We're gonna do it all practical. We're gonna get a stuntman. We're gonna be swinging around.'"

"It's boring. It looks dumb. It looks like a monkey swinging on a vine when you put someone on just a rope. Don't waste your time. That's my advice to the next Spider-Man director."
