Olympus Has Fallen and Plane star Gerard Butler will once again ply his trade as an action star, reuniting with Den of Thieves director Christian Gudegast for the action-thriller, Empire State. Centering on an attack on the titular New York City skyscraper, Butler is now in talks to lead the project, with Deadline releasing a synopsis which you can check out below.

“In Empire State, when the Empire State Building comes under attack by a military contractor hellbent on revenge, Navy SEAL turned NY firefighter Rhett (Butler) and NYPD Tactical officer Dani (yet to be cast) must put aside their relationship troubles as they work to rescue hostages and save the famous landmark.”

It certainly sounds like Empire State will find Butler on wonderfully familiar action hero ground, with the actor also reuniting with Plane producer Marc Butan from MadRiver. Butler will produce alongside his GBase partner Alan Siegel, with CAA Media Finance handling domestic rights, while international rights will be up for grabs at the Cannes market.

Empire State has been written by Bone Tomahawk’s S. Craig Zahler and Secret Invasion and Broken City’s Brian Tucker. No other cast members have yet been announced.

Greenland 2 Gets Major Update, Set Images Reveal Gerard Butler as a Post-apocalyptic Survivor
Greenland: Migration finds Gerard Butler risking everything to embark on a harrowing journey across the post-apocalyptic wasteland.

Before filming began last year, Butler teased what to expect from Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, promising that it will be “more glamorous” and “more fun” than its 2018 predecessor.

“We're Europe-bound, we're still on the hunt for Donnie who's now on the diamond district in Marseilles. I go over to hunt him down, but with different intentions than you might imagine. So we're gonna be in Marseilles, the Alps and London - it's definitely a more glamorous journey than the last one, and probably a more fun, sexy journey."

Den of Thieves 2: Pantera was picked up Briarcliff Entertainment at last year’s Cannes Film Market, and is expected to be released in late 2024.
