Tomris Laffly Variety A bold celebration of taking up space in places you’re told you don’t belong, “Hawa” is a crowd-pleasing fable with a fluffy heart, fierce spirit and disarming sense of humor. Oct 12, 2022 Full Review Drew Gregory Autostraddle Maïmouna Doucouré has followed up her unfairly controversial debut with the ultimate crowd-pleaser. Sep 25, 2022 Full Review Marya E. Gates RogerEbert.com Doucouré expertly explores this theme through the lens of celebrity, interrogating why we’re so drawn to icons for guidance when they are just as lost as anyone else. Sep 18, 2022 Full Review John Serba Decider Hawa is a delightful, delightfully understated neo-fable with strong performances and even stronger direction. Dec 13, 2022 Full Review Romey Norton Ready Steady Cut Slow and boring, this film had a lot of promise but lacked any serious character arc or development to make it worthy of a second watch. Rated: 2.5/5 Dec 9, 2022 Full Review Victor Stiff That Shelf Doucouré’s follow-up proves that Cuties was no fluke. Sep 17, 2022 Full Review Read all reviews

Carla L This was a very moving film. It brought tears to my eyes, something that hasn't happened because of a movie, in quite some time. It was also nice to see a film filled with compassionate and loving people. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/02/23 Full Review Natalia R Perfect movie: excellent directing, acting, script, music, photography. I don't understand how it hasn't become more popular or more awarded. I coincidentally, met Maïmouna Doucouré (director) a couple of times in the bathroom of the theater "Hawa" was premiering in US--at the American French Film Festival in LA. What a class act she is. Maïmouna is humble, talented and exudes great serenity. I told her Hawa should be nominated for an Oscar. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/26/23 Full Review Marsetta L This movie was beautiful in its simplicity and coming of age. Albeit slow in the beginning, the process of character development allowed the viewer to get to the essence of the characters. No hanging fruit but layers of meat and veggies to satisfy viewers appetite for quality story telling. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/29/23 Full Review Renee A I enjoyed this story immensely! It was moving and very interesting, the main young actress that played Hawa was spectacular! I hope to see her again. I enjoyed her grandmother too, reminds me of my granddaughter and I. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/03/23 Full Review JSH 7 Obsession with the Obamas continues. Full of clichés. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 12/15/22 Full Review Martin N A beautiful and well-structured film about a child who would go to great lengths to achieve her dream. The narrative is about the eponymous Hawa and her determination to be adopted by Michelle Obama, going through highs and lows to be in good hands as her terminally ill grandmother is dying. Sania Halifa was amazing as Hawa, and it is stupendous that this is her first acting gig. This film further proves that Maimouna Doucoure is an amazing director and storyteller, and that the success of her first film, "Cuties," was no accident. I am so happy for Maimouna Doucoure who didn't let the despicable detractors spreading misinformation about her or the ridiculous controversy of her first film discourage from continuing to create a compelling and compassionate narrative. Bravo, Ms. Doucoure for standing your ground and for vicariously inspiring others to pursue their dreams! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/10/22 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
