William R. "Bill" Bratten, a cherished family man, devoted community member, and faithful servant of God, who departed this world on May 14, 2024, at the age of 96. Born on September 12, 1927, to Lester William Bratten, Sr. and Clara Ellen Bratten, Bill was a beacon of hard work and dedication throughout his life. Growing up in Powellville, he left school early to support his family's farm, setting the stage for a lifetime of tireless labor and service.
Bill's professional life was rooted in the earth, similar to the way he lived his personal life-fostering growth and nourishment. He began his career in horticulture at Tingles Nursery, where he cultivated not just plants but also relationships for 22 years. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to co-own Bratten Brothers Texaco station with his brother for nearly 15 years. Eventually, he returned to his calling as a nurseryman at Chesapeake Nursery, where he continued to work into his 70s.
Beyond his work, Bill found joy in his role as a Christian layman, with his faith deeply intertwined in his everyday actions. His love for sports was reflected in his support for the Oriole baseball team and his enthusiasm for softball, where he shared spirited moments through the Texaco-sponsored teams. Bill's creativity shone through in woodworking, while his nurturing side was evident in the care he gave to his garden.
As a longtime firefighter for the Pittsville Fire Department, Bill demonstrated his commitment to community and safety, always ready to lend a hand where needed. He was known by all for his integrity and community-minded spirit, traits that earned him respect and admiration.
Bill was a family man to his core, a loving husband to his late wife Gertrude, and a supportive father, leaving behind a legacy through his children: Wilma (Ron) Mumford, Valarie Cooper, Marilyn (Paul) Geaglone, and Mark (Priscilla) Bratten. He also leaves behind his sister, LeeAdele (Ray) Burchette, representing the bond of siblings that endure. His loving spirit will continue through his numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.
Predeceased by his parents, spouse, children Bruce William Bratten, Sr. and son-in-law Terry Cooper, great-grandson Jody Bratten, a brother, and five sisters, Bill's memory will forever hold a tender place in our hearts.
A man of faith and family, Bill was the epitome of loving and faith-filled living. We honor a life well-lived, the quiet hero of our everyday lives, and a man who stood as the epitome of dedication and love. Rest in peace, Bill Bratten. Your legacy will bloom eternally in the hearts of those who loved you.
