Towering over Auxerre, this majestic cathedral sits on the hillside and can be seen for miles around. The exterior has an amazing level of detail as does the interior. Just be respectful as it remains an active church with services scheduled regularly.

Travelling through France for a couple of weeks, we were staying here for 2 nights in a lovely apartment in old town.
We arrived by BlaBla Bus which drops you within a 10 minute walk of the old town.
As we approached the river, we were amazed at how lovely it was with all the old buildings lining the river and park.
The old town is quite steep and has lots of cobbles.
We wandered throughout the old town for a couple of days taking in the food and a couple of bars.
The people were friendly and we thought it was definitely worth a visit.

The two major sightseeing sites in Auxerre are the Cathedrale Saint-Etienne and the Abbaye Saint-Germain. While both are excellent I felt the second was better. You are able to appreciate the religious buildings of cloisters, church and crypt but can also visit a historical museum and art exhibition.

The art exhibition was in conjunction with Pompidou and consisted of audio and sometimes visual displays. My favourite was the round robin song in the church. In addition there are modern statues in the church I enjoyed. There is an section where you walk around and over the excavated crypts with archeological information displayed. When we were there the Gallo-Roman part of the museum was open but the prehistoric section was closed. Oh, and it didn't cost anything.

We dropped in to Les Caves on our way down the canal. It was a welcome relief from the sweltering heat and certainly a novelty. We found the tasting a little perfunctory and not exactly engaging; and somewhat cynically it seemed that every recommendation was for the most expensive on the list. Which may be true of course but combined with a bit of an attitude left us wondering if it was all a little commission driven.

Still, well worth a stop even if you skip the tour and don’t buy anything.

Old clock tower still functioning in central area of town. Worth a look and a picture. Near eateries and shops. The tower itself is likely only accessible on heritage days though.

We found this to be a fascinating and delightful visit. The charming guide helped us to understand the exhibits and the context surrounding them. She spoke reasonable English and had the skill to communicate well enough for us to understand. Go and see!

Compared with the Abbey and Cathedral this is a relatively small church, located only a few minutes walk from the town center. The entrance isn't where you would expect it, it seems to be at the back of the church. Once inside it's the brightness and the wonderful stained glass windows that catch the eye. They really are magnificent, well worth a visit.

The person who helped us was very friendly. She even spoke a little bit of English to us, surprisingly. :) We got city maps, directions to visit points of interest from her. The office is not very big, but you can get all the information and books you need to have a great visit. A BIG Thank you!!!

Very informative visit about life in the region in times gone past. We enjoyed the art exhibit depicting the ville many years before.

Facade and archway entrance to square were interesting to see with the level of detail, but the church itself was closed - even on a Sunday. Unclear hours or if/when it's accessible - website wasn't helpful either. Recommend checking with tourism office regarding access.

This park is a “must visit” if you are visiting Auxerre. So pretty and well-maintained, it contains an area for small children with things to climb upon. It has an outdoor exercise area, pretty flowers, and of course the L’Yonne river to admire as you walk along the garden.
