When a crew member is found dead aboard the Trident nuclear submarine HMS Vigil, the Scottish police begin an inquiry. The Vigil must remain on patrol in order to maintain the UK's nuclear deterrent, so Detective Amy Silva is forced to join the crew on board to conduct her investigation. Meanwhile, Detective Kirsten Longacre follows leads back on land. As the two pursue parallel trails, the case grows more sinister and broadens to include the highest levels of government and the British navy. Read More Read Less

      Critics Consensus

Vigil is ludicrous just as often as it is suspenseful, but a committed cast and pulpy pace make it worth diving in.

John Anderson Wall Street Journal One of the better thriller series of the year and one in which a tangled web of intrigues is made as believable as the fathomless ability of humans to complicate a situation -- at least long enough to last a satisfying six episodes. Dec 23, 2021 Full Review John Doyle Globe and Mail The confined-space aspect is used to wonderful effect, the characters are engaging and, you know, if you throw in a Russian submarine, too, you've got a killer, six-part thriller. Dec 4, 2021 Full Review Carol Midgley Times (UK) The most credible thing that came out of anyone's mouth was Suranne Jones's post-traumatic vomit. Harsh, yes, but as the closing credits rolled I had many questions, chief among them: after six long hours, was that it? Rated: 2/5 Oct 20, 2021 Full Review Hannah Brown Jerusalem Post An exciting, twisty thriller in an unusual setting... Mar 21, 2022 Full Review Victoria Brownworth Bay Area Reporter This is a visually beautiful series with keen direction by James Strong and Isabelle Sieb. Jan 14, 2022 Full Review Michael Baumann The Ringer As much as Vigil captivated British TV audiences with its superb acting and exciting twists, its most important contribution was bringing the submarine out of a 30-year voyage to the depths of cultural irrelevancy. B C Show is pretty good. Is Rose Leslie the worst actor ever? Yes, I think so. Haha Rated 3 out of 5 stars 05/02/24 Full Review Molly M Love the character. Love the suspense. It just keeps getting better. Hurry up and announce season 3 so we have something to look forward to! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/29/24 Full Review Barbara F Fascinating show! The story unfolds with with 2 lines of the investigation taking place simultaneously on land and onboard. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/20/24 Full Review Matthew S Season 1 is a great series. Exciting and military focused. Very intriguing as is season 2! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/19/24 Full Review Marianna K For a thriller that should've been fast paced I thought this dragged a bit, and by episode 4 I was quite bored and wishing it would get to the end. I found it hard to care much about any of the characters apart from the two police detectives. Hard to pinpoint exactly why it felt so dull. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/22/24 Full Review Keelie K So good I watch it twice. Vigil season one is a must see if you enjoy crime dramas. I really liked the storyline and how the flashbacks to the past were incorporated and certain details helped the investigation in present time. The relationship between Amy and Kirsten was lovely to see and also beautiful written. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/06/24 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
