89. Godzilla Minus One
On today's show we have our Godzilla Minus One review! Godzilla Minus One is a 2023 Japanese kaiju film written, directed, and with visual effects by Takashi Yamazaki. Produced by Toho Studios and Robot Communications and distributed by Toho, it is the 37th film in the Godzilla franchise, Toho's 33rd Godzilla film, and the fifth film in the franchise's Reiwa era. The film stars Ryunosuke Kamiki, Minami Hamabe, Yuki Yamada, Munetaka Aoki, Hidetaka Yoshioka, Sakura Ando and Kuranosuke Sasaki. Set in postwar Japan, it follows a former kamikaze pilot suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder after encountering a giant monster known as "Godzilla".
88. The Omen
This week on the show we made Marvin watch The Omen! The Omen is a 1976 supernatural horror film directed by Richard Donner and written by David Seltzer. An international co-production of the United Kingdom and the United States, it stars Gregory Peck, Lee Remick, David Warner, Harvey Spencer Stephens (in his film debut), Billie Whitelaw, Patrick Troughton, Martin Benson, and Leo McKern. The film's plot follows Damien Thorn, a young child replaced at birth by his father, unbeknownst to his wife, after their biological child dies shortly after birth. As a series of mysterious events and violent deaths occur around the family and Damien enters childhood, they come to learn he is in fact the prophesied Antichrist.
87. Late Night With the Devil
This week on the show, we have our Late Night With the Devil review! Late Night with the Devil is a 2023 supernatural horror film written, directed, and edited by Colin and Cameron Cairnes. It stars David Dastmalchian, Laura Gordon, Ian Bliss, Fayssal Bazzi, Ingrid Torelli, Rhys Auteri, Georgina Haig, and Josh Quong Tart. Incorporating elements of documentary filmmaking and found footage, the film follows the events of a late-night talk show episode aired on the night of Halloween 1977, during which the host attempts to boost ratings by inviting an allegedly possessed girl onto the show.
86. The Iron Claw
On this week's episode, we have our The Iron Claw review! The Iron Claw is a 2023 biographical sports drama film written and directed by Sean Durkin about the Von Erichs, a family of professional wrestlers who are "cursed" by constant tragedy. The film depicts the struggles of wrestling company owner Fritz Von Erich's sons to achieve the success their father groomed them for, from 1979 to the early 1990s–resulting in more tragedy.
The film stars Zac Efron as Kevin Von Erich alongside Jeremy Allen White, Harris Dickinson, Maura Tierney, Stanley Simons, Holt McCallany, and Lily James as other members of the family, and is titled after the "iron claw", an in-ring signature move of the Von Erichs.
85. Ghostbusters
This week on the Harsh Language Podcast, its Marvin's first time watching Ghostbusters. Ghostbusters is a 1984 American supernatural comedy film directed by Ivan Reitman and written by Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis. It stars Bill Murray, Aykroyd, and Ramis as Peter Venkman, Ray Stantz, and Egon Spengler, three eccentric parapsychologists who start a ghost-catching business in New York City. It also stars Sigourney Weaver and Rick Moranis, and features Annie Potts, Ernie Hudson, and William Atherton in supporting roles.
84. Poor Things
On this week's show we have our Poor Things review! Poor Things is a 2023 film directed by Yorgos Lanthimos and written by Tony McNamara, based on the 1992 novel by Alasdair Gray. A co-production between Ireland, the United Kingdom, and the United States, the film stars Emma Stone, Mark Ruffalo, Willem Dafoe, Ramy Youssef, Christopher Abbott, and Jerrod Carmichael.[5] It focuses on Bella Baxter, a woman in Victorian London who is brought back to life via brain transplant and embarks on an odyssey of self-discovery.
Poor Things was named one of the top ten films of 2023 by the National Board of Review and the American Film Institute, and received various accolades, including four wins at the 96th Academy Awards, two wins at the 81st Golden Globe Awards, and five wins at the 77th British Academy Film Awards, with Stone winning Best Actress at each of these ceremonies.
83. Oppenheimer
On this week's show, we have our Oppenheimer review! Oppenheimer is a 2023 epic biographical war thriller film written, directed, and produced by Christopher Nolan, starring Cillian Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer, the American theoretical physicist credited with being the "father of the atomic bomb" for his role in the Manhattan Project, the World War II undertaking that developed the first nuclear weapons. Based on the 2005 biography American Prometheus by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin, the film chronicles Oppenheimer's career, with the story predominantly focusing on his studies, his direction of the Los Alamos Laboratory during World War II, and his eventual fall from grace due to his 1954 security hearing. The film also stars Emily Blunt as Oppenheimer's wife Kitty, Matt Damon as head of the Manhattan Project Leslie Groves, and Robert Downey Jr. as United States Atomic Energy Commission member Lewis Strauss. The ensemble supporting cast includes Florence Pugh, Josh Hartnett, Rami Malek, and Kenneth Branagh.
82. When Evil Lurks
On this week's show we have our When Evil Lurks review! When Evil Lurks is a 2023 supernatural folk horror film written and directed by Demián Rugna. An international co-production of Argentina and the United States, the film stars Ezequiel Rodriguez, Demián Salomon, Luis Ziembrowski, Silvia Sabater, and Marcelo Michinaux.
In a remote village, two brothers find a demon-infected man just about to "give birth" to evil itself. They decide to get rid of the body, only to unintentionally spread chaos.
81. Shaun of the Dead
On this week's show, it's Marvin's first time watching Shaun of the Dead! Shaun of the Dead is a 2004 British romantic zombie comedy film directed by Edgar Wright, who co-wrote it with Simon Pegg. The film stars Pegg as Shaun, a downtrodden London salesman who gets caught alongside his loved ones in a zombie apocalypse. It also stars Nick Frost, Kate Ashfield, Lucy Davis, Dylan Moran, Bill Nighy, and Penelope Wilton. It is the first installment in Wright and Pegg's Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy, followed by Hot Fuzz (2007) and The World's End (2013), both of which also star Pegg and Frost.
80. Anyone But You
On this week's episode, we have our Anyone But You review. Anyone but You is a 2023 American romantic comedy film directed by Will Gluck, who co-wrote the screenplay with Ilana Wolpert. Loosely based on Much Ado About Nothing by William Shakespeare,[4] it stars Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell. The supporting cast includes Alexandra Shipp, GaTa, Hadley Robinson, Michelle Hurd, Dermot Mulroney, Darren Barnet, Bryan Brown, and Rachel Griffiths.
79. American Fiction
On this week's show, we have our American Fiction review! American Fiction is a 2023 American comedy-drama film written and directed by Cord Jefferson, in his feature directorial debut. Based on the 2001 novel Erasure by Percival Everett, it follows a frustrated novelist-professor who writes an outlandish satire of stereotypical "black" books, only for it to be mistaken by the liberal elite for serious literature and published to both high sales and critical praise. It stars Jeffrey Wright, Tracee Ellis Ross, Issa Rae, Sterling K. Brown, John Ortiz, Erika Alexander, Leslie Uggams, Adam Brody, and Keith David.
It premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 8, 2023, where it won the People's Choice Award. It received a limited theatrical release by Amazon MGM Studios on December 15, 2023, with an expansion on December 22, 2023. It received positive reviews, with widespread acclaim for Wright's performance.
It was named one of the top 10 films of 2023 by the American Film Institute and has received numerous accolades. It has received five nominations for the 96th Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Actor (Wright), and Best Supporting Actor (Brown), as well as two nominations for the 81st Golden Globe Awards, and won Best Adapted Screenplay at the 29th Critics' Choice Awards.
78. Saltburn
On this week's show we have our Saltburn review! Saltburn is a 2023 black comedy psychological thriller film written, directed, and co-produced by Emerald Fennell, starring Barry Keoghan, Jacob Elordi, Rosamund Pike, Richard E. Grant, Alison Oliver, and Archie Madekwe. Set in Oxford and Northamptonshire, it focuses on a student at Oxford who becomes fixated with a popular, aristocratic fellow student at his university, who later invites him to spend the summer at his eccentric family's estate.
77. Fargo
This week on the show we make Marvin watch Fargo! Fargo is a 1996 black comedy crime film written, produced, and directed by Joel and Ethan Coen. Frances McDormand stars as Marge Gunderson, a pregnant Minnesota police chief investigating a triple homicide that takes place after a desperate car salesman (William H. Macy) hires two criminals (Steve Buscemi and Peter Stormare) to kidnap his wife to extort a hefty ransom from her wealthy father.
In 2006, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".
76. The Holdovers
On today's show we how our The Holdovers review! The Holdovers is a 2023 comedy-drama film directed by Alexander Payne, and written by David Hemingson in his feature writing debut. Set in 1970, it stars Paul Giamatti as a strict classics teacher at a New England boarding school who is forced to chaperone a handful of students with nowhere to go on Christmas break. Da'Vine Joy Randolph and Dominic Sessa (in his film debut) respectively play a cafeteria administrator and one of the students who stays on campus.
The Holdovers premiered at the 50th Telluride Film Festival on August 31, 2023, and was released in the United States by Focus Features on October 27, 2023. It received positive reviews and has grossed $23 million. The film was named one of the top 10 films of 2023 by the National Board of Review and the American Film Institute, and has received many other accolades, including Golden Globe Awards for Best Supporting Actress (Randolph) and Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy (Giamatti) and received 7 British Academy Film Awards nominations, including Best Film and Director.
75. Rebel Moon
Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire, or simply Rebel Moon, is a 2023 epic space opera film directed by Zack Snyder from a screenplay he co-wrote with Kurt Johnstad and Shay Hatten, based on a story Snyder conceived.
Its ensemble cast features Sofia Boutella, Djimon Hounsou, Ed Skrein, Michiel Huisman, Doona Bae, Ray Fisher, Charlie Hunnam, and Anthony Hopkins.
The film is set in a fictional galaxy ruled by the imperialistic Motherworld, whose military, the Imperium, threatens a farming colony on the moon of Veldt. Kora, a former Imperium soldier, ventures on a quest to recruit warriors from across the galaxy to make a stand against the Imperium before they return to Veldt.
74. Leave the World Behind
Today on the show we have our Leave the World Behind review!
Leave the World Behind is a 2023 apocalyptic psychological thriller film produced, written, and directed by Sam Esmail. It is based on the 2020 novel by Rumaan Alam. The film stars Julia Roberts, Mahershala Ali, Ethan Hawke, Myha'la, and Kevin Bacon as they attempt to make sense of the gradual breakdown in phones, television, and other regularly used technology which points to a potential cataclysm.
73. Dumb Money
Today on the show we have our Dumb Money review! Dumb Money is a 2023 American biographical comedy-drama film directed by Craig Gillespie and written by Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo. It is based on the 2021 book The Antisocial Network by Ben Mezrich and chronicles the GameStop short squeeze of January 2021. The film features an ensemble cast that includes Paul Dano, Pete Davidson, Vincent D'Onofrio, America Ferrera, Nick Offerman, Anthony Ramos, Sebastian Stan, Shailene Woodley, and Seth Rogen.
72. Planes, Trains and Automobiles
Today on the show, we made Marvin watch Planes, Trains, and Automobiles! Planes, Trains and Automobiles is a 1987 comedy written, produced, and directed by John Hughes and starring Steve Martin and John Candy. It tells the story of Neal, a high-strung marketing executive, and Del, a good-hearted but irritating shower curtain ring salesman, who become travel companions when their flight is diverted and embark on a three-day odyssey of misadventures trying to get to Chicago in time for Neal's Thanksgiving Day dinner with his family.
The film received critical acclaim, with many praising it for Hughes branching out from teen comedies, and for Candy's and Martin's performances. It has become a Thanksgiving Day tradition for many.
71. The killer
On this week's episode we have our The Killer review! The Killer is a 2023 American action thriller film[3] directed by David Fincher from a screenplay by Andrew Kevin Walker. It is based on the French graphic novel series The Killer written by Alexis "Matz" Nolent and illustrated by Luc Jacamon.[5] The film stars Michael Fassbender in the title role, alongside Arliss Howard, Charles Parnell, Kerry O'Malley, Sala Baker, Sophie Charlotte, and Tilda Swinton in supporting roles. Its plot follows the titular assassin who gets embroiled in an international manhunt after a hit goes wrong.
70. Rosemary's Baby
Today on the show we made Marvin watch Rosemary's Baby! Rosemary's Baby is a 1968 American psychological horror film written and directed by Roman Polanski, based on Ira Levin's 1967 novel. The film stars Mia Farrow as a young (soon pregnant) wife living in Manhattan who comes to suspect that her elderly neighbors are members of a Satanic cult and are grooming her to use her baby for their rituals. The film's supporting cast includes John Cassavetes, Ruth Gordon, Sidney Blackmer, Maurice Evans, Ralph Bellamy, Patsy Kelly, Angela Dorian, and, in his feature film debut, Charles Grodin.
The film deals with themes related to paranoia, women's liberation, Christianity (Catholicism), and the occult. Since its release, Rosemary's Baby has been widely regarded as one of the greatest horror films of all time. In 2014, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant."
69. Poltergeist
Today on the show we have our Poltergeist review! Poltergeist is a 1982 American supernatural horror film directed by Tobe Hooper and written by Steven Spielberg, Michael Grais and Mark Victor from a story by Spielberg. It stars JoBeth Williams, Craig T. Nelson and Beatrice Straight, and was produced by Spielberg and Frank Marshall. The film focuses on a suburban family whose home is invaded by malevolent ghosts that abduct their youngest daughter.
68. Saint Maud
On today's show, we have our Saint Maud review! Saint Maud is a 2019 psychological horror film written and directed by Rose Glass in her feature directorial debut. The film stars Morfydd Clark as a religious private carer who becomes dangerously fixated on saving the soul of her patient. Jennifer Ehle, Lily Frazer, Lily Knight, Marcus Hutton, Turlough Convery, and Rosie Sansom appear in supporting roles.
67. No One Will Save You
Today on the show, we have our No One Will Save You review! No One Will Save You is a 2023 science fiction horror film written, directed, and produced by Brian Duffield, starring Kaitlyn Dever. It is unusual among features for having only five words of dialogue in a 93-minute runtime!
66. Talk to Me
On today's show, we have our Talk to Me review! Talk to Me is a 2022 Australian supernatural horror film directed by Danny and Michael Philippou and written by Danny Philippou and Bill Hinzman, based on a concept by Daley Pearson. It stars Sophie Wilde, Alexandra Jensen, Joe Bird, Miranda Otto, Zoe Terakes, Chris Alosio, Marcus Johnson, and Alexandria Steffensen. The film follows a group of teenagers who discover they are able to contact spirits using a mysterious embalmed hand, only for things to go too far.
65. The Jerk
Today is Marvin's first time watching The Jerk. The Jerk is a 1979 comedy directed by Carl Reiner and written by Steve Martin, Carl Gottlieb, and Michael Elias (from a story by Steve Martin and Carl Gottlieb). This was Martin's first starring role in a feature film. The film also features Bernadette Peters, M. Emmet Walsh, and Jackie Mason.
A simple-minded, sheltered country boy suddenly decides to leave his family home to experience life in the big city, where his naivete is both his best friend and his worst enemy.
64. Barbie
Today on the show we have our Barbie review! Barbie is a 2023 fantasy comedy film directed by Greta Gerwig from a screenplay she wrote with Noah Baumbach. Based on the eponymous fashion dolls by Mattel, it is the first live-action Barbie film after numerous computer-animated films and specials. The film stars Margot Robbie as the titular character and Ryan Gosling as Ken, and follows the pair on a journey of self-discovery following an existential crisis. It features a supporting cast that includes America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Issa Rae, Rhea Perlman, and Will Ferrell.
63. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem
Today on the show, we have our Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem review! Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem is a 2023 animated film directed by Jeff Rowe, who co-wrote the screenplay with Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, Dan Hernandez, and Benji Samit. It is the seventh theatrical Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film and a reboot of the Turtles series. The film stars Micah Abbey, Shamon Brown Jr., Nicolas Cantu, and Brady Noon in the lead voice roles. The ensemble voice cast also includes Ayo Edebiri, Maya Rudolph, John Cena, Rogen, Rose Byrne, Natasia Demetriou, Giancarlo Esposito, Jackie Chan, Ice Cube, Paul Rudd, Post Malone, and Hannibal Buress. The Turtles hunt for a mysterious crime syndicate in the film, but trouble arises when an army of mutants is unleashed upon them.
62. The Last Voyage of the Demeter
On today's show, we have our The Last Voyage of the Demeter review! The Last Voyage of the Demeter is a 2023 supernatural horror film directed by André Øvredal and written by Bragi F. Schut Jr. and Zak Olkewicz. It is an adaptation of "The Captain's Log", a chapter from the 1897 novel Dracula by Bram Stoker. The film stars Corey Hawkins, Aisling Franciosi, Liam Cunningham, and David Dastmalchian. Its plot follows the doomed crew of the merchant ship Demeter led by Captain Elliot who attempt to survive the treacherous ocean voyage from Transylvania to London while being stalked by a legendary vampire known as Dracula.
61. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Today on the show we have our Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind review! We made Marvin watch Eternal Sunshine for the first time.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is a 2004 romantic science fiction drama film directed by Michel Gondry and written by Charlie Kaufman, based on a story by Gondry, Kaufman, and Pierre Bismuth. It stars Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet, with Kirsten Dunst, Mark Ruffalo, Elijah Wood, and Tom Wilkinson in supporting roles.
The film follows two individuals who undergo a procedure to erase each other from their memories following the dissolution of their relationship. The film became a cult classic[1] in the years since its release and is considered by many critics as one of the best films of the 2000s, and one of the greatest films of all time!
60. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse
Today on the show we have our Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse review! After reuniting with Gwen Stacy, Brooklyn's full-time, friendly neighborhood Spider-Man is catapulted across the Multiverse, where he encounters a team of Spider-People charged with protecting its very existence. Today on the show we make Marvin watch Children of Men! Children of Men is a 2006 dystopian action thriller co-written and directed by Alfonso Cuarón. The screenplay, based on P. D. James' 1992 novel The Children of Men, was credited to five writers, with Clive Owen making uncredited contributions. The film is set in 2027 when two decades of human infertility have left society on the brink of collapse. Asylum seekers seek sanctuary in the United Kingdom, where they are subjected to detention and refoulment by the government. Owens plays civil servant Theo Faron, who tries to help refugee Kee (Clare-Hope Ashitey) escape the chaos. Children of Men also stars Julianne Moore, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Pam Ferris, Charlie Hunnam, and Michael Caine.
Children of Men received critical acclaim and was recognized for its achievements in screenwriting, cinematography, art direction, and innovative single-shot action sequences.
