Public Works

The Village has ownership and maintenance responsibility for sidewalk and curb located within public right-of-way. The Village has an annual program to maintain deteriorated sidewalk and curb and gutter that do not meet the Village’s standard. The Village receives many requests from residents and businesses to repair sidewalk and curb that may exceed the Village’s maintenance standards or at locations that is not the highest priority of the Village to repair. The Public Works Department allows residents and businesses to participate in the Village’s program to replace deteriorated sidewalk and curb maintained by the Village if they will share the cost and if the Public Works Director determines there is a public benefit from replacement. A description of this optional participation follows.

The Village may provide up to 50% of the cost of sidewalk and curb replacement only if the two following conditions are met:

(1) the Director of Public Works anticipates surplus funding will be available following prioritized repairs to other Village concrete facilities and

(2) the Director of Public Works determines there is a substantive benefit to the Village from completing the work.

Our Village recognizes the important connection between forests and stormwater runoff and thru our Forestry Department, opportunities are provided for residents to participate in The 50/50 Tree Planting Program.

Residents and Businesses are required by law to have their cross-connection control device connected to an Outdoor Sprinkler system or Fire Suppression system tested annually by a plumber licensed by the State of Illinois for cross-connection control device inspection. Inspection reports must be submitted annually to the Village of Morton Grove Public Works Department – Water Division.

The Street Division operates and maintains all of the at-grade and above-grade assets within the Village’s rights-of-way and alleys. The Village’s pavement network consists of 97 miles of streets, 14 miles of paved alleys and 5 off-street parking lots. Maintenance operations include street sweeping, landscaping, repairing pavement, pavement markings, sidewalks and curbs, leaf collection, tree trimming (removal and replacement), snow removal, ice control and storm damage cleanup. The Streets Division also purchases, maintains and disposes of all Village-owned vehicles (Police, Fire, Public Works, and Administration). In addition to Village-owned infrastructure, the Streets Division maintains 7 miles of State highways and a parking lot for Metra.

The Sewer/Water Division is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the Village-owned water and sewer systems. The water system consists of two pumping stations with a combined storage capacity of 8.6 million gallons. The stations pump approximately 3.4 million gallons a day into 95 miles of water main that supply water to 1,050 Village-owned fire hydrants. The sewer system consists of 41 miles of sanitary sewers, 21 miles of combined sewers, and 45 miles of storm sewers. Maintenance operations include water main repair, leak location, meter installation, inspections, J.U.L.I.E. locates, maintenance and repair of all pumping station apparatus, hydrant maintenance, daily, weekly, monthly and yearly water sampling.

Morton Grove’s water supply meets all Illinois Environmental Protection Agency standards, and has consistently met these standards for many years.

Residents concerned about lead in the water may wish to have their water privately tested. While the Village of Morton Grove does not endorse or recommend any particular testing labs, the following are available HERE.

The Engineering Division is responsible for design, inspection and administration of construction projects involving private and public infrastructure improvements. Additionally, managing the Village’s GIS (geographical information system) is another responsibility of the Engineering Division. The Engineering Division strives to proactively evaluate the Village’s infrastructure systems and identify long-term maintenance needs as well as to develop annual programs and projects to maintain or expand infrastructure systems. Most of these programs and projects are developed and administered by the Engineering Division. Construction standards controlling construction of improvements in the right-of-way or on Village property are established and revised by the Engineering Division. The Engineering Division is directly involved in procuring funding and/or administering contracts for projects performed within the Village using State or Federal money.

The Village of Morton Grove maintains approximately 11,000 trees on the public right of way. The Village prunes all of its trees on a nine year pruning cycle. This is done through the services of a private contractor and the Public Works Forestry Division. Residents may request their parkway trees to be pruned at any time during the year by calling Public Works. All tree removals are handled by Public Works staff. Trees are removed when they are considered to be dead, diseased, or hazardous. We do not authorize the removal of healthy trees.

2017 marked the seventeenth year that the Village of Morton Grove was designated a Tree City USA community. To commemorate this accomplishment, for the past seventeen years, the Forestry Division celebrated Arbor Day with a ceremonial tree planting and distribution of seedlings to third grade students throughout the Village.
